The nice thing about being the son, brother, nephew, cousin and grandson of timbermen is that you tend to pick up some stuff about wood. What makes a 'softwood' and a 'hardwood' isn't the 'obvious' thing that people think. In fact, it has nothing to do with the density of the wood.

It has to do with the method of the tree's reproduction. Angiosperms are 'hardwoods' and drop seeds with some sort of covering (like a fruit (orange) or a shell (walnut)). Gymnosperms are 'softwoods' and drop their seeds without a covering (though they may be in a cone which is not part of the seed, like a pine cone).

Angiosperms are almost always deciduous and tend have harder, denser wood. But not always. Gymnosperms tend to be evergreens and tend to have lighter, less dense wood. But not always. In timber, they just call them "evergreens" and 'deciduous.' (And some other colorful names like "peckerpole.")

So we get things like balsa wood, classified as a 'hardwood' when it's pretty much the softest and lightest wood commercially harvested. Something one could easly drive a screwdriver through. OTOH, we can get southern yellow pine (softwood) that can get as hard as oak after it's aged and all the pitch in it has hardened. Something that would require great force in order to drive a screwdriver through.

So, poplar is called a "hardwood" because of its seeds, but the wood of the poplar is still soft and easy to work. So in a sense, everyone was getting it wrong to one degree or another. However, the important thing to remember is that Early Cuyler is still the Mall Ninja of Wikipedia.

It's interesting to note that hardwoods evolved independently of softwoods. Softwoods date back to the Carboniferous period while hardwoods developed from flowering plants relatively recently - around the Jurassic period. Yet they both evolved wooden stems - trunks. If you examine the structure of their trunks they are actually quite a bit different, even though their properties for building etc are quite similar.

I once inhaled the fumes from an igniting matchhead because I was told it'd give me temporary asthma. Y'know, for getting out of class. I thought I'd bought it. Only knowing a few 'sexist men' (as they seem to define it for this purpose) in my life, I'd say the opposite is true. There's a lot of variance here. Given the entire vid, I doubt he's holding a plate.

The wood could be soft, and I don't think that takes anything away from anything. The fact that martial arts demos involve dry-ass pine boards, not green oak don't take anything away from them. As someone who's broken such things, along with bottles with my hands, even a demo that looks "easy", isn't. If he gets the nail tilted, it won't work real well, and even "soft" wood isn't that soft.

The real trick here is the velocity. It's like cutting a small branch with a ruler. If it's moving fast enough, it's definitely doable.

I think arguing about the wood type misses the point. Even doing it through half-inch balsa isn't as easy as he makes it look.

I once inhaled the fumes from an igniting matchhead because I was told it'd give me temporary asthma. Y'know, for getting out of class. I thought I'd bought it. For a minute that lasted an hour I couldn't draw more than a thimbleful of air and was seeing stars and rockets. It was one of the worst terrors ever and happily for me, an experience I'll never have again.

I hope your kid's doing alright.

He's ok now :) I had 3 severe asthma attacks over the past year so I know how he feels. It's a horrible and terrifying feeling when you can't breathe properly.
