Pretty much. The fact that they don't see why people could be extremely offended at being called a rape apologist or a misogynist really reveals how LITTLE they think about these issues.
One of the things about tribalism, is that you end up taking the track that it's all a game. That people are just little pieces on a big chess board to be manipulated, moved, and destroyed as you see fit. Political Objectification is what I call it. It's a massive problem, and it's one that is at the core of the horribleness that is the SJW movement.
It's why they don't really see the accusations against Shermer as being that big of a deal. He's not a real human being. He's just a piece on the board, and doesn't he understand that it's just a game?

Funny you should mention that. I rarely drink, but all this crap has been making me think of a mellow, old-timey bourbon, the kind you can sip around a camp fire from a flask and imagine that the 20th century, much less the 21st, much less P.Z. Myers' mom, never happened.

I can’t explain how things are going except to say…it’s complicated. Do try to keep up with others — I can’t. I worry that this is the end of a lot of good things, or rather, things that had to be the potential to be good, and that without many changes, we’re going to lose too many great people, and that conditions have become intolerable. Let me tell you that when I pressed “publish†on a certain post the other day, I knew that no matter how it turns out, the one thing I could be certain of is that I would be persona non grata in a large segment of the movement, and that I’d be spending many more quiet weekends at home in Morris in the future (which is OK, this is a nice place, and my day job is ramping up the responsibilities, and I’ll always have the blog).
In other words, PZ has just been handed a three-foot high stack of subpoenas for every single blog post, comment and back-channel email for the last five years.
But even if I’m squeezed out, it’s time to pick a side and build a better secular movement. You can’t do it by simply accepting what is and looking the other way. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. It’s especially important that you don’t walk past the standard set by the powerful men in the movement.

Fixed that for you
Honestly Al, I go back to an analogy I've grown fond of: These people are the piss-stained crack-heads yelling at you from a convenience store parking lot. They've created a situation where the coin of the realm is giving the impression they are under attack, and the younger, more impressionable converts know they get clique-points by being victims, even if they have to elevate every pissy little interaction that most people get and ignore into Defcon One.
The leaders of this, Myers, Benson, Watson, Laden and the rest, they are more than ignorant, disingenuous con artists, they are complete mental cases in their own right. By now everyone knows the drill, if you claim "you should look both ways before crossing the street" Ophelia Benson would get her musty crusties into full hysterical mode and write "So what you are saying is it's my fault if some drunk driver running from the police after kidnapping and raping a 6 year old girl runs me the fuck over?"
Dear me, they do love the attention. Unlike you, they can't get attention by doing and they don't have a career, much less success to look back on. If you look at them, Myers, Benson, Laden, Watson and the rest it's hard to call them failures, because to fail you have to try to do something. They do nothing. They produce nothing. They are just the sort of people who sniff around after a someone else does something so they can point out how they did it wrong. That's what passes for creativity. But when they do try, they fail. Myers hasn't had an academic paper of note published since the early 90s and even then he was just a tag-along co-author. His much touted book took six years to rip off his own feeble blogs posts. Laden's "novel"? What a joke that is. Watson? Her claim to fame is getting lucky because Steve Novella liked the timbre of her voice but aside from that she hasn't done anything, not one thing, on skeptical topics. She reads other people's words and when she speaks her own, it's not on skepticism, it's just rehashed academic feminism with a special stupid twist. And Benson? Simply a failure, simply nuts, just raging at the world for being born and cheated by being her.
Fuck 'em. At the point they start chipping away at your peice of mind, they are not worth the bother. At this point anyone whose opinion you care about knows who you are and what a lying, histrionic bunch of life-sucking parasites they are.

I cannot help but read that in a mumbling tone, with Myers refusing to meet anyone's eyes.
Also, while it may be uncharitable of me, I suspect that "I knew that no matter how it turns out, the one thing I could be certain of is that I would be persona non grata in a large segment of the movement" was really followed by something like "but my enemy would lie defeated before me and others would flock to my side". I think the fact that absolutely no one of consequence supported him in this must have been jarring. You don't risk ruining your own life if you expect nothing good whatsoever to come of it.

I used to read Pharyngula on and off since 2006, and Nerd, while I don't remember him from the beginning, was certainly there about four years ago, several years before the schism, and he was just as annoying in those days. There was definitely a rather nasty cliquey vibe there from about four or five years back, that gradually culled the site of any independent voices. I stopped commenting long before Elevatorgate due to the atmosphere and I suspect a lot of others did too.
Ironically many of us migrated to Butterflies and Wheels where there was a better class of commenter - something that ended abruptly when Elevatorgate happened and Ophelia, after wavering for a couple of weeks, threw herself whole heartedly-into the horde and the commenters from pharyngula took over her place too.
Yeah, if you only know Nerd today, you already know him from years ago. Which makes it pretty clear that apart from frothing ideology, sycophancy is what PZ values most.
Ophelia is the weird mystery to me. Jason was always a twit, Jen was always a lightweight, Zvan was always Zvan, Greta was always a self-promoting goof, Laden was always greasy, but Ophelia once ran a blog for grown-ups. She was always strident about women's issues and bore grudges long enough that she could smoke out Wally Smith's sockpuppets after everyone else thought he was gone, but she wasn't nuts. But, someone says cunt aloud after Elevatorgate and B&W becomes all about Ophelia's paranoia. She can't even see that the "Fighting Fashionable Nonsense" floating over her blog is self-inflicted mockery.

Jesus fucking Christ. Stop with the whining already. Self-pitying is really fucking low PZ. Grow up. Think about all of your great white *and* male privileges and that by your admission you're better off than most people. Surely that should be enough to keep you from sulking to the corner and thinking "Why no one is coming to play with me *sad face*?" right?
PZ was fine with "actions have consequences" as long as they weren't HIS actions and the consequences didn't fall on him. The SECOND anything comes down on him, he's all duck and cover. Even allowing for his recent 'conversion', I guaran-fucking-tee that if he gets accused of sexual anything with a student/woman he's going to do exactly what he did the first time: defend the fuck out of himself. All that "believe the victim" shit will go right out the window like it was tied to a rocket, and if he's called on it, his first response will be "well, well, this is different, i'm INNOCENT of the charges." Due Process will follow within milliseconds.
I have said it before and I shall say it again: he's a cowardly old cunt who is only brave when he faces no repercussions for his words. This, Gelatogate, his "words" with michael nugent that he never seemed to talk about, all of it. He's a spineless twerp.

I sincerely hope good things will come of having these things out in the open. At the very least, every time a famous skeptic pours a woman another drink, heads will turn. And one person refusing to walk past, may make others think about whether they really want to accept the standard.
Thanks for doing the right thing. Maybe one day we will live in a world where women are seen as people, and not prey.
Because, of course, everyone knows that the correct way for skeptic women to get another drink is from a bodyshot test tube that is conveniently sticking out of the underpants of a male stripper.

I can’t explain how things are going except to say…it’s complicated. Do try to keep up with others — I can’t. I worry that this is the end of a lot of good things, or rather, things that had to be the potential to be good,

This needs to be sung to the tune of "Don't cry for me Argentina". :violin:
It demands dramatic reading! Here's a textual dramatic reading:
*PZ sighs* I can’t explain how things are going except to say *He briefly pauses* it’s complicated. Do try to keep up with others — I ... I can’t. *He turns and looks out through a nearby window* I worry that ... that this is the end of a lot of good things, or rather, things that had to be the potential to be good, and that without many changes, we’re going to lose too many great people, and that conditions have become intolerable *He takes a breath after delivering that mouthful*. Let me tell you *PZ turns back to face you* that when I pressed “publish†*He makes a dramatic hand gesture, pressing an invisible button* on a certain post the other day, I knew that no matter how it turns out, the one thing I could be certain of is that I would be persona non grata in a large segment of the movement *he clenches his hand in a tight fist*, and that and that ... *PZ gets teary. Hiccups once, and then wipes the corner of his eye* ... and that I’d be spending many more quiet weekends at home in Morris in the future *PZ now whispers, trying to comfort himself* which is OK, this is a nice place, and my day job is ramping up the responsibilities, and I’ll always have the blog ... yes, I'll always have the blog *turns back towards the windows and stares at a random point in the distance*

No, but even with that handicap, I know how to properly spell the place. It's been my observation that when underage foreign workers are engaged in paid anti-tim trolling, they often try to invoke American icons into their banter but are often betrayed by the most obvious blunders. Tell that to the rest of the crew surrounding you in your crowded India internet cafe, Janeesh.

But even if I’m squeezed out, it’s time to pick a side and build a better secular movement. You can’t do it by simply accepting what is and looking the other way. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. It’s especially important that you don’t walk past the standard set by the powerful men in the movement.

I think PZs "squeezed out" comment is more about being ostracized by the Skeptic movement, which seems odd to me. I don't know people keep referring to him as skeptic betrayer. He has long left the skeptic community. He's absolutely not a skeptic and any attempt on his part to paint himself banished from community he's long disassociated with is an insult to my intelligence.

Please, lawyers, be reading The Pit.
I'm not sure they need to use a process server so it's likely to be some sort of registered/certified mail service with concomitant electronic service. If he makes it hard, or there is some sort of requirement for physical service they'll just have the local Sheriff do it.
When I worked for the Feds and had summon people, I just taped it to their door and took a picture of it. They'd lie and I had pictures to prove my sworn under perjury attestation I served it at the location indicated. It was actually harder to serve a bank because I when I worked for the Feds, we were in the SnL banking meltdown and with all failures, purchases, mergers... It could take days and days to track what bank had the records and where they were located.
BTW, I think it would seriously damn funny if it was a book signing.

They always had clanging brass ones, pretending that Skepchick fratboy shit didn't exist or didn't matter.
Now, let's see if the comments in PZ's (possible) swansong are like the last update. There were a lot of "we got your back" and "sending safe hugs", but few offers of money. And every last one of those pinheads KNOWS the man NEEDS MONEY. RIGHT NOW.

I was one of them. Both out of Pharnygula and to Butterflies and Wheels. And my experience absolutely mirrored yours.

Peezus Christ... "Why atheists have a serious problem with women"
And of course the "hyperskepticism" trope gets trotted out by Rippere. "Just how much evidence do you need?" Um, more than say, none?
One commenter nailed it, though, by saying
"Hyperskepticism in this instance is actually defined as: "Being skeptical of things we'd rather you not." "
Typical baboon tactic -- redefine words to mean what you want them to mean to win your argument rather than understand the point someone was making or admitting, if only to yourself, you made an error. It's not that hard and, surprisingly, it's rather easy to move forward with life and be, perhaps, a little wiser and a little better informed.

I got into an *ahem* "discussion" about this situation with a PZ fan on a forum completely unrelated to any of this, and I opined that the original accusation was worded so vaguely that it's impossible to draw any conclusions without knowing more. I also said that the second accusation was a non-issue: Shermer refilled someone's drink, and she kept drinking, and then she left...he didn't actually do anything wrong, and if she didn't want to get drunk, she should've stopped drinking.
Well, it turns out that I was victim blaming, and I shouldn't do that. Also, did you know that saying "if you don't want to get drunk, don't drink" is an example of male privilege? And if you choose to abstain from alcohol at a social function, or you choose to stop drinking early so you can drive home, it's an example of hypervigilence and it means you're incapable of relaxing?
Needless to say, in the face of such rigorous arguments, I have to say that my original opinions were wrong, and PZ was definitely exactly correct. I just don't know how I was so mistaken...must've been my stupid Y chromosome clogging up my brain again. Anyway, we came to an agreement, and I think I'm Catholic now.
