Fixed that for you

Honestly Al, I go back to an analogy I've grown fond of: These people are the piss-stained crack-heads yelling at you from a convenience store parking lot. They've created a situation where the coin of the realm is giving the impression they are under attack, and the younger, more impressionable converts know they get clique-points by being victims, even if they have to elevate every pissy little interaction that most people get and ignore into Defcon One.

The leaders of this, Myers, Benson, Watson, Laden and the rest, they are more than ignorant, disingenuous con artists, they are complete mental cases in their own right. By now everyone knows the drill, if you claim "you should look both ways before crossing the street" Ophelia Benson would get her musty crusties into full hysterical mode and write "So what you are saying is it's my fault if some drunk driver running from the police after kidnapping and raping a 6 year old girl runs me the fuck over?"

Dear me, they do love the attention. Unlike you, they can't get attention by doing and they don't have a career, much less success to look back on. If you look at them, Myers, Benson, Laden, Watson and the rest it's hard to call them failures, because to fail you have to try to do something. They do nothing. They produce nothing. They are just the sort of people who sniff around after a someone else does something so they can point out how they did it wrong. That's what passes for creativity. But when they do try, they fail. Myers hasn't had an academic paper of note published since the early 90s and even then he was just a tag-along co-author. His much touted book took six years to rip off his own feeble blogs posts. Laden's "novel"? What a joke that is. Watson? Her claim to fame is getting lucky because Steve Novella liked the timbre of her voice but aside from that she hasn't done anything, not one thing, on skeptical topics. She reads other people's words and when she speaks her own, it's not on skepticism, it's just rehashed academic feminism with a special stupid twist. And Benson? Simply a failure, simply nuts, just raging at the world for being born and cheated by being her.

Fuck 'em. At the point they start chipping away at your peice of mind, they are not worth the bother. At this point anyone whose opinion you care about knows who you are and what a lying, histrionic bunch of life-sucking parasites they are.

Many commenters in the Grenade post used the word 'rape' or 'rapist'. In that thread our friend Nerd of Redhead referred to Shermer as a 'known rapist'. Peezus deleted many 'troll' posts in that thread, but did not object to the rape/rapist terminology. That's telling, in my book (and I trust in Shermer's lawyers' too). All this bullshit about "blaming the victim!" reminded me of one of my favorite books "The Invisible Gorilla". There, the rape of "Jennifer Thompson" was discussed and illustrated as an example of how our memory and recollection can be wrong and can lead to the presecution of the innocent. Here's one link on the case.
Thompson is a North Carolina rape victim whose eyewitness identification of a suspect put the wrong man in prison for life. Twice.

Cotton is the innocent man who spent 11 years of his life in prison because of Thompson's mistake. And he might still be behind bars today if he hadn't been watching the O.J. Simpson trial on television in prison in 1995 and heard about a test for DNA.

Thompson, now the 38-year-old mother of triplets, was a 22-year-old college student in 1984 when someone broke into her apartment, put a knife to her throat and raped her.

Several days later, she went to the police station and picked Cotton's photo out of a lineup. She also picked him out of a physical lineup and identified him as her assailant at his 1985 trial.

"I was absolutely, positively, without-a-doubt certain he was the man who raped me when I got on that witness stand and testified against him," Thompson recalls now. "And nobody was going to tell me any different."

Two years later, though, Cotton won a new trial where there was testimony about another man, a fellow inmate who had reportedly told other prisoners he had committed the rape for which Cotton had been convicted. But the man denied it on the witness stand. And Thompson testified that she had never seen the other man before in her life.
Read the whole thing because it's amazing. The short version is this, from the book:

http://i.imgur.com/YWMIRdr.jpg?1

And she was wrong, twice. Imagine if FTB was around when the innocently convicted was going to his last re-trial and just imagine the outcries of "victim blaming". We all would be deaf.

I have Nerd's "known rapist" post preserved for posterity. It's a perfect symbol of not only Nerd's but PZ's lunacy. The fact PZ could let something like that slide while banning commenters who came in to say "But what about due process and presumption of innocence?" says much about PZ's mental state.

Those bannings, by the way, were the result of PZ making good on his threat to ban anyone who came in making the same "tired excuses" over and over. He wasn't going to let anything but "Shermer is a rapist" stand in the latter parts of that gigantic slanderfest of a comment thread. Asshole.

I noticed the terms on page 4 of the C&D, and wondered how they may relate to comments. Myers would have to basically do a mass purge and delete of any post containing comments related to the Shermer allegations. No human could possibly go through thousands of INNOCENCE? *FLOOSH* DISMISSED KNOWN RAPIST comments and hold onto any shred of sanity.

The irony of Nerds libel is that he (Nerd of Redhead) is well known amongst the online atheist community for one basic thing - his tape looped FLOOSH dismissal of claims that are not backed by evidence.
I realize that he FLOOSHes anything that doesn't support his master (whether it is backed by evidence or not), but his stated criteria - a version of Hitchens "that which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence" - is a good method for applying skepticism to claims that might otherwise be erroneously accepted.

And Nerd clearly doesn't understand this in the slightest.

Does anyone recall when Myers, not too long ago, said that what was needed was a radical, revolutionary change? It's possible that he thinks he's now implementing it.

I may have misjudged Myers all along. It always seemed he had his head halfway up his ass and was really into all of this for the lulz. I'm now starting to believe that he really is a true-believer, and that this is his first step toward changing "the system" for the better. Kind of frightening, really.

Nerd would claim that the accusation itself is evidence. He said as much repeatedly in that thread. NoR blindly trusts Peezus who blindly trusts his informant. Ironic, for a fellow who likes to dismiss opinion that is not backed up by citations from the scientific literature. But this is FTB. Hypocrisy Central.

So...where is this evidence?

I'm almost in disbelief at the full-on, synchronized, internet-wide froth that these PeeZ apologists have worked themselves into, and based on nothing but a third-hand account of some anonymous source that couldn't be bothered to go and report this "rape" to the proper authorities when it happened.

Did you use to work at MacDonalds?

It's the 'enjoy,' isn't it? Drives me crazy too...
I don't know what you guys have against him. I'm really enjoying his presence here.

Peezus deleted many 'troll' posts in that thread, but did not object to the rape/rapist terminology. That's telling, in my book (and I trust in Shermer's lawyers' too). Anne Hanna is a Peezus apologist exhibiting William Lane Craig level dishonesty.

Asshole.
Sometimes I wonder if Mama Nerd hasn't warned PZ that Pharyngula is the only thing keeping Nerd from suicide or the funny farm. His hi-watt hostility makes a farce of the notion the place is "moderated."
I can remember him being a toxic fuckwit years ago. I used to read Pharyngula on and off since 2006, and Nerd, while I don't remember him from the beginning, was certainly there about four years ago, several years before the schism, and he was just as annoying in those days. There was definitely a rather nasty cliquey vibe there from about four or five years back, that gradually culled the site of any independent voices. I stopped commenting long before Elevatorgate due to the atmosphere and I suspect a lot of others did too.
Ironically many of us migrated to Butterflies and Wheels where there was a better class of commenter - something that ended abruptly when Elevatorgate happened and Ophelia, after wavering for a couple of weeks, threw herself whole heartedly-into the horde and the commenters from pharyngula took over her place too.

My guess is that soon, he'll be reduced to guessing Rebecca's weight at carnivals.

Yeah, I went there.
Boom. Splat :D

Sometimes, like on days like this, I feel like a chump for not going total-GRAAR on them. Look in the pic archive and you won't find anything gratuitously mean from us. Yet -- You're fat < You're a rape apologist; You're ugly < You're a closeted Marc Lepine. Even if I went full nasty, there'd still be an imbalance. I'm reeeally getting tired of those high-roading sociopaths getting away with their shit.

You can be sure that Svan is currently glued to her monitor, scanning the pit for every ambiguous pic or quote for use in evidence against us at a future date.
My advice to anyone doing photoshops is to include some element of embarrasing truth within the picture that will raise questions of any neutral viewer (the horde will see evil in anything that mocks their leaders, no matter how appropriate or tactful.)

Atheism, Personal

by PZ Myers

I can’t explain how things are going except to say…it’s complicated. Do try to keep up with others — I can’t. I worry that this is the end of a lot of good things, or rather, things that had to be the potential to be good, and that without many changes, we’re going to lose too many great people, and that conditions have become intolerable. Let me tell you that when I pressed “publish” on a certain post the other day, I knew that no matter how it turns out, the one thing I could be certain of is that I would be persona non grata in a large segment of the movement, and that I’d be spending many more quiet weekends at home in Morris in the future (which is OK, this is a nice place, and my day job is ramping up the responsibilities, and I’ll always have the blog).

But even if I’m squeezed out, it’s time to pick a side and build a better secular movement. You can’t do it by simply accepting what is and looking the other way. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. It’s especially important that you don’t walk past the standard set by the powerful men in the movement.

There is an impressive distemper these days on the internets.

Many smart, good people that I know personally seem to fear this "call-out culture" online that is going on right now in many communities online. Folks are immobilized by a moral scare or panic that they think they are watching unfold presently. As for me, I think it all seems increasingly like some surreal science fiction imagining of some bizarre future dystopia. And so, I say:
Consensual sex -- between any mature adult male or female etc. -- is a human good. It is something that should be prized and promoted (would there be world peace if people just had more and better sex, ha?).

But instead I think unduly-moralistic scolds end up actively diminishing human flourishing by their sex-negativity.

And I curse the unholy alliance of the quack far-left so-called feminists: a different kind of ardent feminist than I am -- and the authoritarian anti-sex rightist religionists whom I used to run with decades ago. (How the heck is it that these two equal opposites agree on so very much these days, and the two last decades, too?).

I have a disturbing answer, but it doesn't work for a social networking or FB comment..
Full quote because it nails it. Even slymepitters get manipulated into pondering how to rid conferences of parties. Why let the sex-negative, socially dysfunctional dictate how to run social events? If someone has social anxieties, he should visit a therapist. If someone can't handle alcohol, he should stay the fuck out of bars. It's not the organizers' job to demolish a social event into a "safe space" for the disordered.

I'm not above shamelessly promoting myself from time to time, but this constant "look at me, look at me, ain't I great, come over and read my blog and you'll see how great I really am" bullshit gets real old, real fast.

Enjoy.

And of course the "hyperskepticism" trope gets trotted out by Rippere. "Just how much evidence do you need?" Um, more than say, none?

One commenter nailed it, though, by saying

"Hyperskepticism in this instance is actually defined as: "Being skeptical of things we'd rather you not." "

Jesus fucking Christ. Stop with the whining already. Self-pitying is really fucking low PZ. Grow up. Think about all of your great white *and* male privileges and that by your admission you're better off than most people. Surely that should be enough to keep you from sulking to the corner and thinking "Why no one is coming to play with me *sad face*?" right?
