PZ is not a crook

#6009

Post by Apples »

PZ was over at Ophie's yesterday claiming that he doesn't "recall" ever calling Russell Blackford a liar and that Blackford will therefore "have to wait for an apology for an awful long time" for this "hypothetical insult."

Evidently, PZ is now the Ollie North of New Atheism. I don't believe for a second that he has forgotten about his spat with Blackford, detailed on FreeThoughtKampala and on Scented Nectar's ERV archive. Rather, I believe he figured he'd successfully memoryholed it when the original PToS threads were taken down. But like the shamelessly dishonest politician he is, he'd rather play dumb, rely on 'plausible deniability,' and be a fucking liar himself, than own his past statements.

When commenter arthur promptly posts the exchange, PZ claims he was "misinterpreted," and that he "doesn't recall writing it," -- then a few posts later -- "hey, how do you people have this stuff right at your fingertips?"

Are we still doing the bassist jokes?

When erik was a kid he asked his Dad for a bass. Daddy says he will only buy him one if he takes proper lessons, so he agrees.
After the first lesson he comes home and Dad asks "What did you learn today". "I learnt the notes on the first five frets of the E string" says the young shitstain.
Next week his dad asks him again. "This week I learnt the notes on the first five frets of the A string" he answers.
On the third week his dad asks him again and erick replies "Sorry, Dad I couldn't make the lesson this week, I had a gig".

I stopped playing in December and even with the transmutation it was still pretty hard for those of us on RP servers who did actually RP. I remember spending hours looking for a robe/hood combo that looked like it could be one continuous piece and failing because all the robes that were the right colors showed tits.
The biggest issue I had with my female Elf character in WOW (stopped playing 3 years ago) was I could not find suitable "fuck me" shoes for her to wear with her non-combat outfits.

(You do know that one definition of an MMORPG is Many Men Online Role Playing Girls ... right?)

Not that did not stop me from having hissy fits like a proper feminist at the female elves dancing in their undies on top of the mailbox at Ironforge for money.

But that was a long time ago. I play EQ2 these days, and my female characters tend to wear armour appropriate for their role like my Inquisitor (plate) vs my Fury (leather).

Speaking of which I have not played in a week.

All this A/S drama has been pretty compelling, and just keeping up with the Slymepit could very easily become a full time job, so I either toss EQ2 or my volunteer work.

Fuck ... not enough hours in the day to devote to so many 1st. world problems.

A bassist and his girlfriend go to a John Myung showcase. After the show, the girlfriend goes "I don't understand, he plays lots of notes very fast, and all you do is E E E." To which the bassist responds "Ah, but you see, he's still looking for the note. I found it!"

So looks like there are 12 videos slated? If they're ~20 mins each and she produces a total of only around 260 minutes for $160,000 ... this stuff will have cost her backers more than $500 a minute with an extremely late delivery. For that price, as 16bitheretic pointed out, I want some exotic locations, interviews with game-designers and others, something original -- not the same blue-screen background recycling-her-university-women's-studies-thesis talking-head format she's always done. We'll see. Dang - I wonder what Rocko could have done with $160,000 -- a full-on Slymepit rock-opera - he could have called it Les Ms-Magazine-erables.
No shit. For that much money, show me some actual research. Give me some historical context, ANYTHING other than this regurgitation with screenshots shit.

I was in Thailand a few years ago and met an American couple on holiday. Over the course of a few drinks, the subject of haggis popped up in the conversation. It took me roughly 10 minutes to convince them both that Haggis is a wild animal (indigenous to Scotland) and that it's on the endangered species list. The actual haggis we eat is simply an attempt at recreating the taste of the real thing.

By the time we parted company, I had them both worked up about the plight of the "wee beasties" and they'd both sworn to spread awareness when they got home.

True story...

Pitchguest wrote:Now he did that with a shoe string budget. Imagine what kind of game Sarkeesian could have made with the money she got? She got more money than she anticipated and therefore was subject to delays. So, switch gears. If she had chosen to make her own game and incorporated the tropes she felt was sexist and subverted them, I would have fucking applauded that. It wouldn't even have had to be a technically advanced game, just your average indie game. But if she had, and if she inserted some humour into it to avoid preaching, I would probably have enjoyed it.
You seem to have three fundamental misunderstanding.

First, you seem to think that her complaint is that "There are no non-sexism games." If that was the case, then yes, her problem could be solved by making one such game. But her point is that there exists a lot of sexism in video games. She does not say all video games are sexist. She even says that no every use of "Damsel in distress" is sexist. She also says that just because a game has a sexist element (in her opinion) that does hot mean that you should stop enjoying that game, just be aware of that aspect. So, seriously, tell me how her complaint could be solved by her making a game?

And two, you seem to think that people should obey your made up rules. You are making up a rule that if A) someone wants to talk about sexism and B) people hand her a load of money, then, she should stop talking and instead make video games. That's basically a rule you have just made up on the spot. And apparently it doesn't even matter if there is wide-spread sexism in games. Nope. If you have money, you can't talk about that, you just have to make a game. Yep, it sounds weird but that's just the kind of rule that Mr Pitchguest likes to make up.

And three, you seem to think that making games is easy and all it needs is $160K. That's fucking bullshit. That kind of money does not pay for programmers and the design artists and marketing that are the bare fucking minimum. Besides, to make a game you have to sink at least two years of your life, possibly more, without any gaurantees that it won't be a complete flop, because afterall, markets have also a big randomness. There are plenty of awesome kickass indi games that don't make a penny and nobody gives a shit about them.

This is somewhat too apologetic for my tastes, and is honestly the line that bugs me most about this entire thing.

What stopped women and girls from playing games in the 90s? The fact that there were no female protagonists? There was a time before 3D graphics and remotely developed video game plots. Where were all of them then? Because I remember the 90s, and the word gamer was synonymous with 'neckbeard loser with too much time on his hands'.

Even in early and mid 2000s, female gamers were rare, and your point is becoming more salient, but the industry had almost overwhelmingly a male audience. There were hundreds of games made that didn't involve looking at a protagonist/storied self insertion. Why weren't they playing these? When did this inclusion of women just become so much of an issue?
I wrote that somewhat poorly. Women have, from what I can tell, always been players of video games in solid numbers. When the atari 2600 first hit, as many of the girls I knew had one as boys. Nothing was *stopping* them at all, and nothing did stop them. The industry as a whole simply ignored them, or relegated them to casual games, games about barbies, etc.

Keep in mind that for a long time, serious studies of video gaming didn't really happen much, and prior to the rise of blogging and the like, finding it could be tricky. So the public notice of it was somewhat rare. In addition, as you point out, the public image of a "gamer" was male. boys played video games, girls supposedly didn't. It wasn't true, not really, but that's how people saw it.

Also keep in mind that on the other side of the screen, for a long time, women in video games were somewhat rare. A notable exception was Roberta Williams, one of the founders of Sierra Entertainment. If you look at many of the titles from Sierra, including Kings Quest, they often had women protagonists. She was also not afraid of more...colorful games, like Leisure Suit Larry and Phantasmagoria. You also see less of a reliance on the DiD trope in Sierra games when she was active with the company.

I think the reason you start seeing things such as stronger female characters develop over time, (Dragon Age and DA 2 are great examples), is that women are not only publicly seen as gamers on the consumer side, but are all over the creation of games as well, not just in traditional areas like art, or making coffee, but in the programming, management, and financing. As videogames become more mainstream, the DiD trope becomes just one of many possible themes for a game.

Trophy wrote: You seem to have three fundamental misunderstanding.

While I agree with some of your post (mostly the part about Pitchguest and making new games) my issue with AS is that she looks at sexist tropes from one direction only.

The equally sexist male tropes in video games have been pointed out to her in the comments (of the one video she didn't moderate of disable comments) by numerous people. Still, she persists in her denouncement of any female tropes and ignoring male tropes.

This is (for me) a common failing of "feminists" who claim to be for gender equality, yet only see (or talk about) half the picture.

That's a photo of a bassist attacking a guitarist.
The drummer asks the bassist what's going on.
"This bastard's detuned one of my strings" he replies.
The drummer says "Is that all? "
The bassist answers "Yes, but the fucker won't tell me which one"

First, the game is not about Krystal as Sarkeesian makes it out. The game is about Krystal and Sabre, a male character, and the protagonist at the game's start.
Who cares? There is something to be said for brevity, and here she is talking about a game involving a playable female hero that was never made. She left out the part that there was another male character? So? It was a game that was never made and her point was to show a game idea that started with a strong female character and ended with the same weak character that is shown over and over and over.
Because she makes the game out as Krystal being the only protagonist, and that's simply not true. She misrepresented the game. She also implies that sexism was the driving reason behind the change, but never even comes close to talking about the real reason. And in this case, fuck brevity. If you're going to make brevity the major requirement, you don't need to raise an assload of money and buy all the video games. That's what you do when you're promising *analysis*. This wasn't analysis, it was a fucking book report.
EdwardGemmer wrote:
She then goes into a context-free history of the damsel in distress
It wasn't context-free at all. She expressly mentioned that the damsel in distress is has been a huge part of culture and literature for thousands of years and provided examples.
She failed, completely, to mention the external cultural influences behind that. For example, her bit about King Kong fails to mention most of that was really racism, not sexism at work, and the deep (and stupid) fears white people had about "unfettered negro sexual savagery". Again, she's pushing this as an *analysis*. That creates some expectation of completeness, not "Anita chats about video games". She is not just someone working at McDonald's who had a neat idea. This is someone with some expertise in the area, even using it for her master's thesis:
She earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies from California State University, Northridge and a master's degree in social and political thought from York University. Her master's thesis was titled I’ll Make a Man Out of You: Strong Women in Science Fiction and Fantasy Television.
What I saw in that video? Crap. The screenshots took more time than the research.
EdwardGemmer wrote:
She also completely, completely ignores the fact that up until the last decade, maybe two, women gamers, as far as anyone could tell, didn't really exist in force. This was due to ignorance and programmer bias, at least mostly. Game designers were mostly male, and so wrote the games they wanted to play. The early financiers of video games were? Male. So you have an industry largely run by and for men.
Sure, probably a reason the games have been the way they are. What is good about her videos is that she mostly presents facts and typically very few opinions. She was also clear that this criticism doesn't mean you are a sexist if you like videogames. It is what it is - facts about popular games and how they portray women. You may want her to do a history of game developers, but she has to limit her presentations somehow or else you get those 112 minute boring montrosities on Youtube that everyone likes to post.
Then don't pitch this as some kind of analysis of anything. Just call it a shallow look at women in video games, and refund people's fucking money. Or donate it to someone ACTUALLY ANALYZING THIS. Again, this is a video book report, and not a very good one.
EdwardGemmer wrote:
I spent 23 minutes to learn exactly nothing.
Maybe, but I'm willing to bet you know more about video games than most people. Instead of focusing on the arcane facts she ignored, I'm glad she focused on the ones that didn't portray a female as a DiD. It was interesting to see the Zelda examples where Zelda had an active role until they showed her as a feminie princess, where she became immediately helpless. Trying to frame the plot and explain everything would have been boring and taken forever and not been particularly relevant. She isn't cherrypicking.
[/quote]

I know a lot about a lot of things. It's called wanting to not be ignorant. But what I'm talking about aren't arcane facts. The most recent games in the Zelda franchise, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword do not portray Zelda as "the ball". In fact, her reasons for being trapped in her castle in Twilight Princess are that of a ruler sacrificing herself to save her people. That is noble, and heroic, and Sarkeesian fucking ignored it.

Indeed, she also fails to see that over the course of the franchise, you see, sometimes in fits and starts, the changing of Zelda's role, moving from a helpless treasure for Link to win to someone as involved in what is going on as he is, only from a different angle. But again, is this analysis or a fucking book report. You can't have it both ways.

Those of you who had to deal with doubthat over at the Nugget threads might appreciate this comment from that Ophie thread on "Rules for Shitheads":
doubthat wrote:I’ve been sick the past couple of days, so I’ve read and participated in this nonsense far more than I ever have. I’ll just leave an observation that hopefully makes people feel a little better:

Having now perused the slymepit, I have to say that my primary reaction is not that it’s a thriving cesspool of hatred, it’s that it’s basically an empty little place where about 6-12 people generate 95% of the posts, and it’s mostly just repetitive crap like, “OMG, did you see what (mock name for FtB blogger) did today?”

They even have threads dedicated to FtB commenters, and again, the surprising thing is not how vile the attacks are (though there are plenty of those), it’s that most of the threads are just two or three posts.

Then the amusing thing is that if you go over to Michael Nugent’s blog and read his recent posts, the slymepit sympathizers are the SAME 6-12 PEOPLE!

Don’t take this as a “avoid the trolls,” “ignore the harassment,” statement, I just hope people recognize that this group is discreet and pathetic. They seem larger because of the way the amplify each other on social media sites and YouTube, but holy crap, I recommend looking through the slymepit just to get a feel for how sad and lonely it is over there.

Back to the real world for part of today, and I’m a functioning adult for tomorrow, so I’ll have to leave those battles behind content in the knowledge that they’re a marginal group whose behavior is only marginalizing them further.
Let's see .... looking at the last 2 pages ... I see comments from me, garybusey, skepticduh, Gemmer, Git, 16bit, Dave, Strawkins, angry_drunk, reap, bhoytony, andrew, submariner, another lurker, welch, Phil, Eskarina, Bhurzum, Trophy, skep tickle, LMU, Wonderist, Southern, windy, Erik, John Brown, decius, Justin, debaser71, Mr. Danksworth, Metalogic42, Renee, Pitchguest, sprinkles, Tigzy, JAB, jimthepleb ..... 37 commenters weighing in over the last 3.5 hours or so.

But remember, baboons - only 6 or 12 active folks in the whole pit. You guys really shouldn't concern yourselves with this sad, lonely, empty little place.

Stay at home with the Kiddies if you possibly can

#6044

Post by AndrewV69 »

About the business of staying at home with the kids and as to whether it is considered a burden or a privilege I would like to introduce you to Catherine Hakim (1). In this article(2) about her it was noted that:
A minority of women (between 10 and 30 per cent) are work-centred, giving priority to employment, while a similar proportion are home-centred, with their priorities centred on their children and preferring not to work. This leaves between 60 and 80 per cent in what Hakim calls the "adaptive" group, who prefer to structure work around their family responsibilities.
Hakim has produced papers that examine this subject in some detail. Such as this one "Women, careers, and work-life preferences" (3) and this one which generated a considerable amount of heated commentary titled "Feminist Myths and Magic Medicine: flawed thinking behind calls for further equality legislation" (4) (I am currently reading the last one now myself).

On a personal note, if there was one thing I would do over in my life if I could, it would be to stay at home with my kids. No question at all in my mind.

YMMV

I agree. Actually, I think WoW (and other MMO's) found the best solution to the clothing problem, via Transmutation type systems, where people could find the outfit that they WANTED to wear and use that independently of the stats, and it became a thing of personal expression. Options are the solution here.
I stopped playing in December and even with the transmutation it was still pretty hard for those of us on RP servers who did actually RP. I remember spending hours looking for a robe/hood combo that looked like it could be one continuous piece and failing because all the robes that were the right colors showed tits.
Well, I think I have the solution for you: Paladin's T2 Judgement set. You can get it soloing Black Wing Lair raid (totally feasible as of now) and Molten Core (piece of cake) for the leg pieces. And it looks badass.

For a shield (if you are Protection), solo Black Temple and Illidan drops an awesome shield that goes very well with the T2 set.
The Paladin T2 Judgement set was the Best Ever Fucking Armour set in WOW. Nothing ever came close. Not even. Completely bad ass. Go for it!

Having now perused the slymepit, I have to say that my primary reaction is not that it’s a thriving cesspool of hatred, it’s that it’s basically an empty little place where about 6-12 people generate 95% of the posts, and it’s mostly just repetitive crap like, “OMG, did you see what (mock name for FtB blogger known sexist) did today?”
So, it's basically like FtB then? :rimshot:
At least we don't have to crawl up someone's arse.

Or do we and no one told me yet?

To be fair, my warrior (as you could see above) uses the TBC Recolour of the T1 Pally Set.

welch wrote:I think the reason you start seeing things such as stronger female characters develop over time, (Dragon Age and DA 2 are great examples), is that women are not only publicly seen as gamers on the consumer side, but are all over the creation of games as well, not just in traditional areas like art, or making coffee, but in the programming, management, and financing. As videogames become more mainstream, the DiD trope becomes just one of many possible themes for a game.
I'd suggest that it's also because men want different things out of their female characters. Dragon Age 2 as you said has a good example of the character range of ladies (and of men) to suit everyone's taste. Obviously I fucked Anders because he's so broody and shit. My husband HATED ME FOR IT.
