While preparing for my trip to the Empowering Women Through Secularism (EWTS) conference — thanks to a fundraiser graciously promoted and funded by supporters — I failed to notice any type of anti-harassment policy listed on the conference’s website and am thus quite befuddled. I praise conference organizers for not implementing an anti-harassment policy, but cannot help but note inconsistency within some speakers at this upcoming conference.

Ah well, I guess I knew it had to happen. Cromm has finally banned me from his blog because, under his post explaining why the Lindsay affair is not a witch hunt, wherein he says (regarding anyone arguing that the Lindsay affair is a witch hunt):
There are, shockingly, people who don’t immediately recognize how stupid this argument is. And because I am in the business of explaining why stupid arguments are stupid, here is a really simple ‘how-to’ guide for recognizing whether or not something is, in fact, a witch hunt: Is there a witch? Is there fire involved? If you answered ‘no’ to either of those questions, then it’s not a witch hunt.
My emphasis.

He has decided that my comments arguing why the Lindsay affair is a witch hunt, wherein I also answer several questions posed to me, and answer to several misrepresentations of both myself and the Pit, he says:
Aaaaaaaand we're done. I've let this absurd derail drag on long enough. Welcome to the block list, johngreg. Wish I could say it's been fun, but it's been mostly boring, hypocritical, and fatuous.
My emphasis.

And when I said: "if you demand a literal witch, and a literal fire, as Cromm does, you are being silly", he replied with:
Astute readers (or even casual ones) will notice that I didn’t do that, but lying is more fun than reading so.
Um, to repeat quote:
... Is there a witch? Is there fire involved? If you answered ‘no’ to either of those questions, then it’s not a witch hunt.
Liying? For pointing out precisely what he said? Huh?

I mean I know Cromm is one of the primary dishonest FfTBers -- if he's not a memeber of the FC(n), we should promote him -- and I am not surprised. But such blatant horseshit is always disappointing.

I see nothing innately bad about having an anti-harassment policy. The problem is crafting a good one that does not open the door for abuse of said policy to cater to the whims of the easily offended or more often than not, people who get to upset when disagreed with. And the other end of the stick is having those that oversee it's use to enforce it fairly.

Not every event need such a policy. I think of it much like having standards for commenting on forums & blog posts. You can opt to have some guidelines for posting. But it needs to be well crafted enough not to be open for abuse and it needs to be enforced fairly.

On this we both completely agree.
Other Guest wrote:Lindsay's in a great position now. The noise has dropped off. He hasn't promised or conceded any resources. It doesn't really matter if the FTBloggers think they've won.
He is in OK position for now. But now that they have an expectation of him and CFI, they will be watching him like a hawk. To them, he is already tainted, and they will be quick to throw him & CFI under the bus for the slightest of perceived insults.

So now Lindsay & CFI may be subjected to long protracted rants of a longer duration of time about how horrible they are and how they hate women. Where as JREF just gets largely ignored and maybe transparently bitterly sniped at on occasion.
Other Guest wrote:In a couple months, CFI can start putting together a new speaker lineup and quietly drop the FTBloggers. So long as Lindsay keeps his head down for the next conference cycle, he can be quietly rid of them.
I hope that is the case*. But sadly, I expect this will just result in a protracted war of image assassination.

* Actually the best case scenario would be if everyone could sit down like adults and discuss proffered ideas based on their merits instead of resorting to witches-of-the-week and character assassination, but I don't really think that is an option with the fc(n) crowd.
Lindsay has tossed them a chicken bone and the usual hyenas devour it as if it were a juicy steak. I find it amusing to watch, not unlike a David Attenborough documentary about the scavengers of the savannah. As long as Lindsay doesn’t feed them anything substantial they will gradually starve. They are too lazy and too incompetent to hunt for themselves. He has absolutely nothing to fear from this pack of non-entities.

Just look at them:

How could rapists and murderers restrain their bestial urges without a conference policy in place?

I did a little more digging on Maria Poscente (who died at age 28) and her twin boys. The story is they did not all die at the same time:

Name: Bernabeo Poscente Birth: 11 Jun 1917 Death: 30 Jun 1917
Name: Leuis Poscente Birth: 11 Jun 1917 Death: 3 Jul 1917
Name: Maria Poscente Birth: 1890 Death: 1918
But, oh, what crowds in every land
Are wretched and forlorn!
Through weary life this lesson learn --
That man was made to mourn.

Impossible. If the nefarious Abbie Smith was present, then murderous rape (and rapicious murder) must have been comited. Worse of all, you probably wore those Crocs at the convention. You monster.

I don't have a problem with anti-harrassment policies if they are reasonable. The policy for Convergence/SkepchickCon is fine.

Not on facebook, so I went here http://www.vanden-eykel.com/photography/

The Phoenix Cross picture in "remnants" is particularly appealing. Bit of irony with a phoenix, but it makes me think of old, small, wild graveyards which I always find completely captivating. Weathered gravestones+wild flowers and unkempt trees and grasses=yum.
Thank you for your kind words :)

Phoenix Cross comes from the BC town of Phoenix, which doesn't exist anymore. The entire town was turned into a pit mine. The graveyard is still there though, and you would love it. My favorite stone was for "Maria Poscente and her twin baby boys" which tells a sad enough story by itself, but even better is that although they died in 1905, someone is still regularly leaving flowers on the grave.
unnggh!
Yup that's one I'd pull over and wander into and read all the gravestones with interest and a peculiar, strong peace.

For all that is poignant and mysterious, who is leaving flowers over a century later.
Can't help but hope you go back and take a picture when flowers are there, I'm forced to live vicariously through your camera's lens.

Why is it so difficult to understand. Some soufflés have collars, and some soufflé do not. Enough with your culinary bigotry! FLOOSH!

You don't use collars? Or did you take them off before you shot?
There you go flanning your culinary privilege at me. Fuck you! Fuck you to the ground with rusty barbed wire to be pulled out of your ass! Why do I continually get harassed about my soufflé from these pitters.

Lsuoma, we need an anti-anti-soufflé harassment policy for these boards to make it a safe place for soufflé creators. If you do not impose such a policy, I shall refuse to attend any of your future conferences.
Ah, ha ha ha ha ha... I was curious. I eschew collars because I find that taking them off can cause collapse if I'm not careful. But others swear by them as they give you a better vertical rise and more of a fine dining look.

As reported by PZ Myers:
On Friday, Point of Inquiry’s two co-hosts—Indre Viskontas and Chris Mooney—resigned from their positions at the Center for Inquiry. On Monday, Point of Inquiry producer Adam Isaak followed suit. This note is to explain our reasons for departing CFI and our future plans.
This has to do with Lindsay's speech, of course.
The actions of Lindsay and the Board have made it overwhelmingly difficult for us to continue in our goal to provide thoughtful and compelling content, including coverage of feminist issues, as in past interviews with guests like Amanda Marcotte, Katha Pollitt, MG Lord, and Carol Tavris.

I say good riddance to that annoying accommodationist Mooney. Don't know the other two. Probably morons as well. After all, anyone who thinks Amanda Marcotte is worth interviewing is an idiot. Clearly a positive outcome.

Nooooo, really? You mean, people acted like human beings and didn't go around rapin' and pillaging just because there wasn't an "official policy" telling you not to? Say it isn't so!!!!!
The absolute need for anti-harassment policies is akin to the "can you be good without god?" question. Can you be good without an anti-harassment policy?

Apparently.

Yes, its amazing how so little can explain so much. From why female dissenters have been accused of chasing cock in the skeptical community, to why three individuals with no connection to WISC2 magically decided to quit over comments made there.

To an outside observer, it doesnt appear as if Watson has friends (or boyfriends). She has people she can use, and then ditches them when they are no longer exploitable.

I wish you wouldn’t characterize it that way. Now, I was a huge and vocal critic of Mooney’s dishonesty in the Accomodation Wars and I stand by those opinions. But people are complicated and rarely all “good” or “bad.” Regardless, we are not teams for the sake of being teams and talking about our ‘sides’. I know you didn’t mean it that way, but that’s pit talk and it’s damaging.

If Mooney or anyone else decides not to put up with an organization that’s out of touch or on the wrong track, then good on them.
Because using the expression 'pit talk' is totally not taking sides. Moron. They deserve Mooney. They can keep him.

Even Myers warms to Mooney already:

My beef with him was that he was on the spineless liberal side. Maybe his backbone is ossifying a little bit now.

Over a 100 years later someone is still leaving flowers? I was curious so I looked and found this:
http://ernestartist.org/November25_2010_02.htm
Center frame: Maria Poscente 1890 to 1918 and her twin baby boys...
mptwins-02.jpg
Also this:

March 31, 2010.

Phoenix Cemetery. Even though the last body was interred here in 1919, memories are not so quick to fade away in the minds of loved ones. These bears can't be that old. Someone still cares, and takes the time to visit here.

The stone reads:
In Loving Memory Of
Maria Poscente
1890-1918
And Her Twin Baby Boys
mptwins-01.jpg
I have also seen some sad tales in a couple of family graveyards myself. I have an ancestor whose 2nd wife apparently buried him beside his 1st. wife and 12 children who all died at the same time of cholera in the mid-1800s. He married his 2nd wife shortly after that and had 10 more children with her. His 2nd wife and some of her children were subsequently buried there also.

There were so many children less than five years old buried there. Modern health has come a long way since then clearly. Half or more of your children no longer die before they grow up, not to mention the risk of childbirth in the first place.

We take a lot for granted these days.
Hmm. I am disappoint with the teddy bears, though the black and white photo makes them slightly more uhh.. bearable.
Also the first link to the graveyard showed all these fences around the plots.
I've not seen that before and find it extremely awkward.

My great aunt is buried in a tiny old cemetery in the cornfields of Nebraska. So -quiet- there, except for the endless winds of the Great Plains. It's tended to but some of the stones are over a century old, tipping, strange. One I remember well was for a young man who died at around 20 years of age in the late 1800s. Was a simple small slab stuck flat to the ground, soil and grasses encroaching on all sides. The marker merely gave his name, date of birth, one word in all caps: MURDERED, then date of death.

Shit, that's hilarious. Mooney is a wankstain, and they deserve each other. I am glad he's leaving POI - it used to be a good show until they hired him. Too bad they didn't fire him years ago, but I'm amazed he's still around - I thought he faded into irrelevance a while back. As for Watson's boy toy, who cares. Never heard of him, never cared. At least I can imagine the toy being given a choice of quitting or losing access to such a Queen as Beccy BooBoo, but if Mooney is quitting still, then maybe Lindsay hasn't lost everything, and CFI still plans on marginalizing the baboons. Only time will tell.

That one of the little white stone standing up awkwardly right next to a tree is amusing, the kind of thing you run into when in these old cemeteries. La di da Oh hello death.

Colour me confused but were they chasing cock or were the boys sniffing seats? Or was it a bit of both? In any event it sounds like a bit of jealousy causing the claws to come out. The attacks on Mahew seemed to be related to that sort of thing in my mind.

So who exactly was screwing who or not getting an oil change? Apart from the Watson/Isaak coupling that is.
