Just a matter of time. I hear there is a Randi prize for making this kind of prediction? :text-lol: You can just see this coming. You know you can.
Don’t see that she is doing any “femsplaining”; she did say “that is up to them and no one else”. Although I can see providing a lot more information to both sexes as to what is really entailed even if that might cause a precipitous decline in the birth rate. Sort of like giving young teenage women some "robot" babies to take care of for a month or two ....

But, personally, I think marriage should be put on more of a contractual basis – who does what for whom and how often – as the current structure seems open to abuse and feelings of being hard-done-by. Might forestall some of those bitter divorces ….
I assume that FRA is "Female rights advocate"? Not sure what the other acronym means, but it really isn't important. I tried to do a quick search debunking the "half of marriages end in divorce" and found this article. I had heard years ago that the statistic isn't accurate, but I really suck at stats and wouldn't be able to determine the truth on my own.

Here's another site which lists some even worse statistics here, including higher numbers (this is for serial marriages - surprise - people who divorce and remarry are more likely to divorce again!).

I like the idea I heard in some fiction, and possibly some ancient societies (vague memory of some - maybe Roman? IDK) - a sort of contract marriage that lasts for a year (or other time period). Let anyone do it, as long as they can legally consent. No penalties once the contract is over.

Bit of a can of worms that aren’t easy to untangle. But I looked into it sometime ago and it seems that there are about 2 million marriages per year in the US, and about 1 million divorces. Something that is corroborated here:
It is commonly claimed that half of all marriages in the United States eventually end in divorce, an estimate possibly based on the fact that in any given year, the number of marriages is about twice the number of divorces.
But I also remember several science-fiction stories that talked of marriage contracts as you described – some of Heinlein’s, I think.

I think that is currently practiced in Iran so young people can date/fuck. Forgot where I read it, so grain of salt and all that.

Yeah - that's a bit different in intent, but similar in practice. They do it to get around the "no sex without marriage" bit. They get married for a short time, get their rocks off, then get divorced. It's revealing at how little they think of their god, that they think that bit of trickery would fool him (that assumes they are actual believers and not just following the cultural norms). But, Orthodox Jews and other extremists in most religions do similar things.

Kinda like saying you're a feminist, while using sexist language and having sick fantasies about students dressed as half-fish (ewww....that's a nasty thought - I think I through up in my mouth a lot)!

I think there needs to be some internet law, á lá Godwin and Scopie, whereby invoking a dictionary
definition as part of your argument results in forfeit.
Your post inspired me to do a google search, and what I found out is that they don't dislike dictionaries, they really really hate them with a passion:

http://www.google.com.co/#q=site:freeth ... 80&bih=878

The posts found by that search are all saying that dictionary definitions are illegitimate, incomplete and used in bad faith.

Except one, that time when the dictionary decided to change the definition of misogyny to encompass prejudice, because of that Gillard politician person. That time dictionaries were our friends

What surprises me is how so few people are able to see that this rejection of dictionary definitions is nothing else than a transparent attempt to control people by changing the meaning of words to suit their ideas and ideologies, and to pressure others to use THEIR definition. FTB resembles a cult more and more every day.
Excellent points, guys. I humbly offer my contrafibularities.

May be interesting to note that the Christian canon has no definition of marriage, other than the sexual union. In other words according to the jebusgod the first person you fuck, you are married to forever. Lots and lots of adultery going on in christian land then.

I guess being an MRA was just a brief flight-of-fancy for her. I don't want to speculate on the reasons. I would love to see another women who was just a bit closer to Karen Straughan representing us. Typhonblue is not the person, nor was Wooly. Of course I realise I am asking for quite a lot.

regarding the Daily Mail article, I am looking for the story covered by non-tabloid news before I react.
Interesting, what is/was your take on Typhonblue? Keep in mind I'm not really "in" that scene so if something happened with TB or WBB, I wouldn't know.

I had the same reaction to the "Meet skeptixx" post. The collection of quoted comments (in my biased opinion) makes Skep tickle look focused, formidable, intelligent, and reasonable (if snarky). Hard to see how anyone who isn't already singing obediently in the choir is going to read that post and feel sympathy for Ophelia's wailing about being victimized and harassed.

The closest the index and ring fingers are to being the same length as each other, the more likely a large penis. The more difference in length between the index and ring fingers, the more likely that the guy's penis is small.

Good to know you and your drag neighbours are safe ERV.

I am not sure what to make of Damion leaving and the post on tmklac's blog. I've enjoyed his posts (and interactions with him) and also enjoy Franc's writing and attitude. The conversation about the best way to approach the "rift" has been made over and over again, and we've already seen that the only thing that changes minds is a) people actually reading the 'pit, which happily is an activity implicitly encouraged by the entirety of FTB and b) FTB or A+ers freaking out on people and banning them or saying things so ludicrous it's impossible for fans to stomach any longer. The politer (for comparison!) folk like Damion support people who arrive as part of a) and Franc's activities have very likely encouraged the culture of b). It's sort of like a marketing campaign aimed at two different demographics and both appear to be equally valid.

So, let me get this straight: Ophelia goes to great lengths to publicly post information about Skep tickle that we don't know, she reveals Skep's real name and that she's a board member of a local atheist organization. Now, it seems Skep herself said once she works in mental health (I think it was, so medical profession), but that doesn't tell us anything beyond knowing she works in mental health. So, basically, fuck all.

So when user "theetar" says Skep is a "respected doctor" (which could have been an educated guess, or just assumption), does that constitute as doxxing, in light of what's been revealed? No, Ophelia, no it fucking doesn't. (Although to be fair, I suppose with all the information that's already been revealed, you might as well call it that.)

On the other hand, as a consequence we got this post:

http://freethoughtblogs.com/butterflies ... ent-559282

Gotta look on the bright side.

Wow.

This is the very first discussion I've read in this forum since I joined, besides a few introductions, and already I'm feeling less alone. This might be the closest thing to my current views about gods that I've ever seen.
Yeah. The theists have invaded the 'pit have they?

Yeah. The whole thing reminds of the average reaction to howard stern in the "bababooie" glory days.

Nice.

If you haven't done so yet, for an hilarious critique of Malta and the Maltese national character, you need to read Earthly Powers by Anthony Burgess of Clockwork Orange memory.

Also, don't miss the gynormous cinematic Caravaggio in the cathedral, painted while he was a fugitive from papal justice - wanted for murder, in fact.

I like the idea I heard in some fiction, and possibly some ancient societies (vague memory of some - maybe Roman? IDK) - a sort of contract marriage that lasts for a year (or other time period). Let anyone do it, as long as they can legally consent. No penalties once the contract is over.
I think that is currently practiced in Iran so young people can date/fuck. Forgot where I read it, so grain of salt and all that.
It is also becoming more common in Muslim communities in the UK.

That kind of contract marriage may be fine for a man, but in some Muslim countries (at least the ones I've been to) a woman is supposed to be a virgin before marriage (in some places, on the brides wedding night, her family will place a white cloth on the bed to 'prove' this). In these countries a divorced man is fine, but a divorced woman is shamed (obviously if she's divorced it's because she wasn't a good wife) - so there should be no incentive to enter into these types of contracts. Perhaps this perception is lessened for some Muslims in the UK..

ERV wrote:'Breathing' as in it looked like the windows were each alive and independently breathing creatures o.O Very LSDish. When that started happening we took the stairs down to the shelter.

Fun story time--

So as I was leaving to get back to work, I tried to convince my neighbors (a troupe of about eight African American gay drag queens) to follow us. They declined, were just going to wait it out. About 30 minutes later I get a frantic call from them for directions to my work shelter. They dont know campus, so I told them where to park, and I stood outside in 'hurricane like rain and wind', screaming their names so they could hear/see/find me, held the door open (actually stood there for a while while the storm raged-- the doors lock after hours and I didnt want anyone trapped outside. Partner stood in between the doors with motorcycle gear on just in case the glass blew).

A while later D2 whispered-- "Those boys have makeup on... And their nails are done... ?????"
Me, non nonchalant-- "Yes honey, make-ups fun. I like make-up."
D2-- "But theyre BOYS!"
Me, nonchalant-- "You like soccer. And kung fu. Some people say those are boy sports. But youre a girl and you like it."
D2, I can literally see her 'getting it'-- "Oh! *nod*"

Someone said earlier I did more for feminism than The Usual Suspects, without leaving the kitchen (lol, btw).

I did more than them for racial, sexual, and gender diversity while running from a mother fucking tornado. Also, its hailing again. FUCK.

If you saw a dog with hair like that, you'd report its owners for neglect.

Again, I say that the original picture was as effective as prayer. Not to mention *some* looked rather illiterate.

I agree with her message as well. I thinking posing for the photo is one of the more "activist" things that any of that bunch have accomplished, tbh.

As a gross anatomy instructor, I've seen lots of different human bodies - mostly older, well-fed, and somewhat worse for wear bodies. Entropy is not kind to the vertebrate body plan.
