Today I got some great data. Started writing paper for said great data. Took Arnieman on a couple walkies. Made a GIGANTIC pot of spaghetti sauce from scratch cause the veterans home next door had over 9000 tomatoes that they couldnt use (hopefully they can use some kick ass spaghetti sauce...). Cooked dinner for the fam. Looked for houses in a new town cause I might have a post-doc lined up (whooooo!). Chillin reading some papers before fam gets back.

Great news about the post-doc, Abbie - I hope it works out! It's looking like a good year for tomatoes here, might be able to fill up my freezer with spaghetti sauce and taco filling made from the harvest. Gotta figure out what's eating my collards and chard though ... bastards!

Ophelia uses this from a post of Skep Tickle's to claim that she's doxxed herself:
5) That working for the past 20 years in women’s health, as I have, which has in fact meant not only using the bathrooms there and not only reading the pamphlets but in fact choosing which ones we’ll post, oh and also screening women for risk of intimate partner violence (IPV) and treating women who have been victims of IPV…would teach me a darned thing about IPV? (Which the attack in India was not; that was stranger violence.)
Yeah, because women physicians are like banned from working in women's healthcare, or something, and there's only one or two of them in the entire US. Patriarchy!!!

I’m noticing a pattern of people arriving on these comment threads and lecturing the bloggers about what they should be writing about, lately, and in particular making the assertion that there is some way to “resolve” the conflict and get past divisiveness by seeking some sort of mysterious “common ground”.

I, for one, am not interested in finding common ground with people who set up hate websites or who associate and applaud those who do.

Common fucking good?
Go away you clueless, sexist ass.

You know what is profane? Calling this a ” a useless, never ending political debate” and claiming that acceptance of a dishonest smear campaign and sexist harassment is a common good. Don’t compare a woman documenting the harassment against her to antisocial little girls, tell a woman to shut up and take it and then pretend to give any fucks whatsoever about what’s good for anyone but you, you status quo upholding, false equivalence pushing slime.

Fuck right off.

Misread Common ground. Just remove my post please. I’m so fed up. I fucking hate this.
For the record - some of my comments on Ophelia's blog could just as easily apply to a couple commenters here. I appreciate satire and have laughed at a some of the photoshops posted here but those won't go a long way toward finding common ground either - especially when their enraged, emotional response is entirely predictable. The line between funny and hurtful is blurry, and is (obviously) perceived differently depending on which side is the target.

Note that I'm not saying 'don't do it', I'm saying that in my opinion it doesn't help move the debate forward. I will always err on the side of no censorship/stifling of debate, and will always (hopefully) meet irrational arguments with rational, reasoned responses - the relative absence of which is the biggest flaw in the FtB universe.

And that is why I appreciate this environment more - dissent is not usually met with emotion and invective. But the only possible way to rise above this "schism", in my mind, is to elevate the dialogue (and I appreciate the irony of this argument in a place called The Slymepit).

In other words, my argument boils down to - (a) keep the free exchange of ideas, and (b) err on the side of not unnecessarily ridiculing the other side (and it should go without saying that hurtful, racist or sexist comments/jokes/satire are beyond the pale).
The jig is up. Goddess Ophelia has told us all that you're really skep tickle, and she's never wrong. That's why she has to delete all those comments that prove her wrong!
The funny thing is Ophelia has my email address (have to enter it to comment there) and presumably could trace my IP address and compare it with Skep Tickles. Also funny that I assumed Skep Tickle was a guy until Ophelia used her first name...

Anyway, my first few comments today went through unmoderated. The one I just left is caught in moderation (apparently being critical of Ophelia means you must be moderated) so on the odd chance she doesn't let it through, here it is:

Ophelia - I'm a long time skeptic but relatively new to this "schism" (and sick of it already). Ophelia can't ignore it. Otherwise she has nothing to blog about and won't have money for food. She lives off imagined harassment and her livelihood depends on her being able to convince her readers that it is real.

It's kind of sad.

Jan Steen wrote:Greta Christina demonising Justin Vacula (while continuing to erect the wicker man for Ron Lindsay):
And all of this unfolded while one of the primary anti-feminist harassers was sitting there in the audience. All of this unfolded while a person who has been invading and disrupting the Twitter feeds of conferences he thinks are too feminist, a person who has defended the misogynistic online harassment and the use of hate speech against feminist women in the atheist movement, a person who has written for, and done a recent interview with, a misogynist, rape apologist website that’s being monitored by the Southern Poverty Law Center (the organization that monitors hate groups), a person who has said, “I fail to see how refusing to believe in God leads to the ‘logical conclusion’ of abandoning the belief that women exist to serve men,” a person who dealt with a dispute by posting someone’s home address on the Internet, was sitting in the room. The fact that Justin Vacula was attending this conference had many people on edge: nobody knew if he was planning in-person confrontations, or continued online harassment, or what. Many of the people Vacula has personally targeted with harassment were in that room with him. For Lindsay to give that particular opening talk in that loaded environment — and for him to then make a point of going up to Vacula and personally welcoming him to the conference — showed a level of contempt for the speakers and attendees of that conference that is shocking… and that is entirely unacceptable.
Well, if Justin really is "one of the primary anti-feminist harassers" then the harassment can't amount to much.

"The fact that Justin Vacula was attending this conference had many people on edge: nobody knew if he was planning in-person confrontations, or continued online harassment, or what."

Greta's "Justin Vacula" character is about as believable and as made up as the unicorn in one of her "kinky" little stories.

http://freethoughtblogs.com/greta/2013/ ... y-context/
If anyone was "on edge", it was because there was undoubtedly a lot of behind-the-scenes rabble rousing designed to make attendees nervous about Vacula's presence. It was people like Ophelia who made some nervous, by waving around this bloody-fanged Strawman Vacula of their own creation and trying to scare people with it.

So what happens when the dreaded bogeyman actually attends the conference? Not a thing. Not a goddamn thing.

I wonder how many of the attendees started wondering "WTF are these people making such a fuss for?"

I'm thinking that Ophelia, Greta et. al. are nervous that people are indeed wondering what they made such a big stink about. Hence they are furiously pushing their Evil Vacula narrative even harder, long after the conference has ended. They're still trying desperately to get people do believe Vacula is the devil, doubling and tripling down to poison his well.

I'm rethinking my earlier opinion on the wisdom of Justin's attending the conference in Dublin. Actually, the more of these things he goes to, the more people are going to give Ophie and her thugs the squink-eye and say "Oh, shut the fuck up".

The wild card, of course, is Vacula's propensity for boneheaded moves. After all, Karla can't be there to babysit him every conference. But if he acts politely and courteously, he has the opportunity to make certain people look like complete jackasses.

Oh dear, Abbie, you have fucked up your life, haven't you. If only you'd spent grad school flying to non-science conferences, and you had spent some time making your blog more like a Facebook 'Information' page than a scientific endeavor, you too could now be spending your days engaging with the Great Thinkers of our day on Twitter.

LOL at all the great photoshops (for me, especially Lsuoma's doxxing of ST's many socks above, and Jan's FtB comment form yesterday, due to personal connection w/ subject matter).

I am not reading the threads over at FtB, operating under the "what you don't see won't piss you off and tempt you to react" line of thinking. I might suggest some people based at FtB try that approach.

I said yesterday that my last post under any 'nym at FtB was the last one of Skep tickle's that Ophelia let through; I believe that was 3 days ago. That still holds true. And I don't lie. (Sometimes I might not remember correctly, or might make an incorrect assumption, but I don't lie.)

(To add to my high & mighty comment above: I do also sometimes make a faux statement intended in jest, like the one about IP addresses above.)

This is AFTER she deleted my comment showing that her suspicions were in error.
Stephanie was busy today, wasn't available to show Ophelia how to compare IP addresses.
If she, or one of her fans, actually looks at my comments over at skepchick she'll figure out why I only recently started posting on these blog sites, I've been out of the country and otherwise engaged for most of the last year.
I can understand the otherwise engaged part, but not the out of the country part, since many (most?) of us are out of the country you're likely talking about.

Otherwise engaged is a very good thing, as erv just demonstrated today (congrats, erv btw). Her comment that the ftb folks were spending too much time on this struck a bit too close to home though.

It's even simpler than that - I even made a post there explaining why you couldn't be skep tickle, and she deleted it. You have to be skep tickle for her threat narrative to work. So does Joanne York. So does everyone else she doesn't like at the moment. If she admits she's been making paranoid false accusations all day, she looks crazy in front of her sympathizers.

Greta's "Justin Vacula" character is about as believable and as made up as the unicorn in one of her "kinky" little stories.

I get the impression that a few of them are beginning to stand back a little. Skep Tickle has basically gone on Butterflies and Wheels and used the weapon of snark. That is all.
They've got this fixation about 'microaggressions' at the moment that basically means ANY criticism of them can simply be added to the pile of real or imagined slights which together make up their harrassment. Which pretty much makes them immune from criticism since any criticism is thrown into the pile. It's classic 'you're either with us or with the terrorists' rhetoric.

My email to CFI:
To put it bluntly: A small number of extremely vocal bloggers and speakers have decided that the core mission of all skeptical, secularist, and atheist organizations and communities must be to support a number of "progressive" liberal political ideals, and that any individuals who do not comply immediately, without discussion or debate, must be silenced, ousted, shamed and shunned. They have zero interest in skepticism or religious freedom, and their only interest in secularism extends no further than how it can help their political agenda. Included in this group are bloggers and speakers PZ Myers, Ophela Benson, Stephanie Svan, and Jason Thibault of Freethought Blogs, Rebecca Watson of Skepchick, and Amanda Marcotte.

I only name a few of the most vocal, and the only reason I name them is so that you can take the time to see what these people actually say and do. PZ Myers recently posted a blog offering the opinion that anyone who identifies as a "Men's Right's Activist" is simply a mass-murderer of women without the guts to pull the trigger. Amanda Marcotte recently penned a hit piece on atheist/secular activist Justin Vacula, claiming that he believes "women exist to serve men", simply because Justin does not agree with her that atheism logically leads directly to feminism. Some of these people have been directly involved in "outing" or "doxxing" people who disagree with them, so that their followers can call employers, harass, and intimidate. Some of them have been seeking to get people fired from their jobs, ousted from organizations, and attempting to establish blacklists of people not welcome to speak at or even attend events, all for the crime of disagreeing with their politics or their morally bankrupt tactics. Obviously false threat narratives, claiming harassment and fear of violence, have been built up around many individuals who dare to disagree with these ideologues.

You now have a case of this treatment in your own organization. For simply noting what is obvious to any casual reader of these individual's blogs, that limited sociological terms are often used to silence dissent and vilify people who disagree with their views, he has been called a sexist, a misogynist, a "thug in a cheap suit" (PZ Myers), and the hounds are now baying for blood.

These individuals and their supporters have little or nothing to do with secularism or ending religious discrimination, and are almost the polar opposite of "skeptics". They respect no science that does not validate their worldview, and they cannot tolerate even a hint of debate or open discussion. They openly mock the principle of free speech as bring only a cover for hatred and bigotry and oppression. In their minds, anyone being allowed to talk back, instead of permanently "shutting up and listening", is oppression. How people so privileged became such experts on oppression is anyone's guess, but they certainly have no intention of "checking their own privilege" or "shutting up and listening" to anyone.

I hope that you will take the time to see the full picture here. I hope that you will support Ron Lindsay, and keep a careful watch on those who seem to think their voices are the only ones that matter. Irrational ideologues like this are poisonous to any movement, but especially to one based on skepticism, freethought, and open discussion. I and many others will be watching the outcome of this particular "putsch", and I for one will not support any organization that gives these individuals any more influence than they already have. Again, please support Ron Lindsay in this matter. He has done nothing wrong and simply said out loud what so many reasonable people in our community, men and women, liberal and conservative alike, have been thinking lately. He couldn't have been nicer about it, yet witness what such consideration gets one in return...ridiculous accusations and outright dishonesty and hatred. Do not pander to these poisonous ideologues, it will benefit nobody.

Thank you for your time.

I suppose I was a bit too "hostile" in tone, too wordy, I went a little personal about certain people, and I noticed a couple of small spelling mistakes after I'd sent it, but oh well. If nobody cares to check out reality for themselves, or is willing to reject skepticism for politics, then no changes would have mattered anyhoo.

I do encourage everyone here who thinks Ron deserves some support to write a letter or email. Many of you could do a better job than myself, and numbers can't hurt. With what, a half-dozen hit pieces out there already, you know some of the brave keyboard warriors have been busy slinging the bullshit.

Whatd Nanny Benson do all day?

Some weird posts that she calls 'writing' and moderate comments.

Again, this has NOTHING TO DO WITH FEMINISM.

These stunts are entertainment for losers to fill their days, which would otherwise be spent staring at a TV. Fake emotions so they can feel *something* in their otherwise empty lives. Caught between their antisocial behavior and begging for attention, these entirely dull individuals do absurd things to, momentarily, pretend they are interesting and have interesting thoughts and do interesting things.

Except at the end of the day, they arent, and they dont.

Said it once, said it a million times, will probably say it a million times more: L-O-S-E-R-S
Anybody else find it hilarious that Abbie does more for feminism than Greta without even leaving the kitchen? :rimshot:

LOL.

By the way, anyone who has played the Google-her game might want to combine my first name with "top doctor" (without the quotes) and see what comes up, just for yucks.

Also, if you're interested, go ahead and listen to that interview that comes up under my first name and "atheist interview" (without the quotes). It's from 2007, was recorded on stage at a small liberal Christian conference where I was the token atheist (and a little nervous about using my full real name but was testing the waters). In it I'm pretty sure I described not wanting to spend with people who try to impose their own beliefs on me, and gave my observations about a leader who insisted he had all the answers, wouldn't allow for discussion, and tried to shame people by telling them how awful they are.

(Not the person you might be thinking of, but very similar dogmatic behaviors. The parallels between some of "them" - one particular FtB blogger in particular - and conservative Christians has been drawn before.)

And for those who didn't see the info at FtB (or aren't themselves lurkers from FtB who helped spread the information), my first name is the character Audrey Hepburn played in My Fair Lady. (Hey, it's going to take me a little time to feel comfortable saying it straight out, after trying to stay "semi-anonymous" as I said at Ophelia's.)

And yes I know I am giving away the keys to the castle. There are already a bunch of cheap copies out there.
