In the sense she is actively engaging in behaviors that go contrary to what, at least my councilor, would recommend for dealing with her mental issues, indicating that she is addicted to this kind of attention more than she cares about treating her depression, then yes, I feel sorry for her-- In the same sense I feel sorry for a heroin addict or alcoholic who has help, but will not stop abusing drugs.Lsuoma wrote:I was thinking that too, she seems completely fucked up.Tony Parsehole wrote:If Jen Mcreight really is depressed then I feel a bit bad for her. It's a bit puzzling to me because the official narrative is that the responses she was getting drove her out of being a public figure, but the tweeting etc. that she still does is the thing that is most likely to attract a negative reaction. I can see how that might be best for some people if what they want is a community of likeminded folks. To me that's always presented two hazards:rayshul wrote:I do think it's smarter to stay offline if you're suffering from a mental illness or limit your interactions (especially on the subject) to forums dedicated to the subject. But I suppose YMMV.
This is true. I assumed that most people who join these communities want to get out of them as fast as fucking possible so they can go back to normality, and that's not always the case - it can feel more secure in them. I don't think though that while clearly suffering from mental illness, that this is the best time to try and engage with, uh, the internet. Those people who have successfully promoted for mental illness (for example, depression) are those who've experienced it and have come out the other side, or who may still struggle but have a good control through therapy and/or medication.AbsurdWalls wrote:I can see how that might be best for some people if what they want is a community of likeminded folks. i) Committing so much of your identity to your illness in that way might make it a crutch.
ii) Members of some mental health support communities are quite territorial/possessive.
Also, one of the positive things that can come out of mental illness is a motivation to increase awareness or advance the interests of yourself and your fellow sufferers.
I guess it will just vary from person to person depending on how resilient they are.

There is some gender diversity, the estimate is approx 30/70 men/women, some attendees with obvious physical disabilities (vision, mobility, etc) and undoubtedly many with invisible disabilities (is as true in the general population). Racial diversity is almost nil. Ideological diversity appears to be woefully lacking.Pitchguest wrote:What are you talking about? I see blonde, brunette, redhead... oh. I'm an expert at being depressed. One of the most effective ways to stay depressed is to play the "pity me, I'm so powerless" game. Feeling unable to affect your circumstances is a major contributor to depression. I do feel sorry for people in that cycle. Depression can easily lead to twisted thinking that blinds you to the way out of it.Phil_Giordana_FCD wrote:Tony Parsehole wrote:If Jen Mcreight really is depressed then I feel a bit bad for her. Sometimes, when in depression, I will voice it at the Pit, or My FB official page, or any other outlet. I kinda understand the mechanics of doing so, and weirdly enough, it helps.
However, I don't use it to get victim points. I do it because it's a convenient way to let out my feelings (yes, we white cis-gendered males have these too).
But indeed, if Jen is depressed, I'd like to offer my support. All the best
