Reasons why people have repeatedly told me to kill myself:

1) I fucking hate George Lucas
2) I cuss a lot
3) Florida (this one I understand)
4) I was in the military
5) I was mean
6) I'm in IT
7) I use Macs
8) I use Windows
9) I'm married

etc.
What's with atheist feminists and this morbid fear of people telling them to suicide? Are they secretly thinking about it, and fear that a remark made on Youtube or Twitter or whatever may be the last straw?

If they're really that susceptible to suggestion...

JENNIFER MCREIGHT! YOU MUST GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY! RIGHT NOW. ALSO, YOU MUST MAKE ME A PEANUT BUTTER SAMMICH. WITH PETER PAN, NONE OF THAT ORGANIC SHIT.

THEN YOU MUST PUT ON A CLOWN SUIT, BOWLING SHOES, AND SKIP BACKWARDS WHILE SINGING THE "TEAPOT" SONG.

IN NORWEGIAN!

YOU MUST DO ALL OF THIS RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE I, A PERSON ON THE INTERNET YOU'VE NEVER MET AND LIVE THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY FROM HAS TOLD YOU TO DO IT! IN ALL CAPS! GET THAT SHIT MOVING, BITCH!

this is why I'm not allowed my own cult.

If Jen Mcreight really is depressed then I feel a bit bad for her. Depression is wank, but she doesn't do herself any favours at all with all this "pity-me-I'm-a-tortured-voice-of-this-generation" shite.

Not really comfortable w/ the comparison of oppressed people being silenced and privileged people being told to shut up and listen. #wiscfi
At least this is something approaching an argument. If you're 'privileged' you're not allowed to speak.

Sometimes, when in depression, I will voice it at the Pit, or My FB official page, or any other outlet. I kinda understand the mechanics of doing so, and weirdly enough, it helps.

However, I don't use it to get victim points. I do it because it's a convenient way to let out my feelings (yes, we white cis-gendered males have these too).

But indeed, if Jen is depressed, I'd like to offer my support. All the best

Well, he doesn't say it's the audiences reaction. I wouldn't be surprised if the speakers were also mocking Justin's questions just to get some laughs.

Not like he paid an extortionate amount of money to be there.

I'm delighted that even CFI are now pointing out their fucking racism and sexism. Why in fuck would anyone want to live in a world where people are judged by their race and gender. It's fucking sick shit, right there.

Am quite amused by the low attendance. I'm figuring that if everyone paid to attend, that means they've got incoming $$ of around $55k. Minus staff costs and the rest, I wonder how valuable this is financially... and if CFI will consider it worthwhile to do another.

I can't see why it's attractive to run a conference focussed on one gender.

I could have gone last year when I lived less than 2 hours away, and I can’t remember why I didn’t. Wanted to go this year and I’m on the other side of the country. Dammit.
Er, possibly because at the time you were all over Meyers's blog, complaining that you were about to be made homeless, and had no money, and was suffering a case of the sadz?

Maybe that's why you missed the conference? You do remember all this, right? Because all of those sad stories, which I believe earned you some money from other commenters there, were definitely 100% factual and in no way an attempt to extort sympathy/cash from idiots.

Right...?

In the sense she is actively engaging in behaviors that go contrary to what, at least my councilor, would recommend for dealing with her mental issues, indicating that she is addicted to this kind of attention more than she cares about treating her depression, then yes, I feel sorry for her-- In the same sense I feel sorry for a heroin addict or alcoholic who has help, but will not stop abusing drugs.

It's a bit puzzling to me because the official narrative is that the responses she was getting drove her out of being a public figure, but the tweeting etc. that she still does is the thing that is most likely to attract a negative reaction. She might as well still be blogging, doing the hobby things she has pointlessly given up, etc.

A PhD is tricky enough if you're totally compos mentis, any struggles in that department will only make it more challenging. I do think some of the pressures involved can bring out those sorts of problems in people who were previously just a little neurotic or whatever. Not to say that's the case for JM, just saying that in my experience it is a a bit of a rollercoaster and that takes its strain on people. I hope things work out for her.

I do think it's smarter to stay offline if you're suffering from a mental illness or limit your interactions (especially on the subject) to forums dedicated to the subject. But I suppose YMMV.

Yep. And it seems to me that she is likely to be getting encouraged to continue doing this shit by her so-called buddies, even if they don't mean to.

The whole "I am woman, I am invulnerable! Hear me roar!" narrative means that she may have her identity and self-worth tied in so closely with not having the metaphorical weak bladder that she just can't stop.

I can see how that might be best for some people if what they want is a community of likeminded folks. To me that's always presented two hazards:

i) Committing so much of your identity to your illness in that way might make it a crutch.
ii) Members of some mental health support communities are quite territorial/possessive.

Also, one of the positive things that can come out of mental illness is a motivation to increase awareness or advance the interests of yourself and your fellow sufferers.

I guess it will just vary from person to person depending on how resilient they are.

This is true. I assumed that most people who join these communities want to get out of them as fast as fucking possible so they can go back to normality, and that's not always the case - it can feel more secure in them. I don't think though that while clearly suffering from mental illness, that this is the best time to try and engage with, uh, the internet. Those people who have successfully promoted for mental illness (for example, depression) are those who've experienced it and have come out the other side, or who may still struggle but have a good control through therapy and/or medication.

Wait a tiny second, there. The threads still exist intact with comments? Or just that one?
I put that one back up a long time ago because there were a lot of links to it, and I wanted my original commentary on this issue to be readily available.
Yay!

here is the footage of Laden celebrating his personal (albeit temporary in hindsight) victory over free speech while the Skepchick audience cheers him on: (around 28:19 into the clip)
Fantastic, thanks.
Also fantastic is the link above by ERV.

The task of unpacking the thoughts and events of the last several years (let alone the past decade or so) is often daunting but remains hella fun so far. I realize everyone is focused very much on the here and now of WiS, but if at any time anyone happens to have a few links to throw my way pointing to historical context, and if you don't care to muddy the current of posts within the thread (as I am doing, but I'll hush), my box here is open and untainted.
Rigid ideological conformity enforced by digital book burning, the effect of which was to take 16.6 megabytes of plain text off the web completely. That is what these people are actually applauding. They had no way of knowing, at the time, that the archives would reappear within weeks on Scented Nectar's site.
Hmmm. Will try to find.
If any truly free thinkers ever needed a reason why these people must be fought tooth and nail, that should do it. There can be no freethought where there is no free expression.
Right on :D

Maybe we shouldn't have laughed at her boyfriend ordering this strong female role model to get off the internet that one time. Perhaps it really was for the best mental health reasons.

Still...it was a fucking funny tweet.

I was thinking that too, she seems completely fucked up.

Paging Chris Crocker! Chris Crocker to Youtube!

Not to get too philosophical, but if you refuse to treat your problem seriously, even when inconvenient, you have no chance of getting better, or consistently managing it.

Look at these fucking hipsters!
What are you talking about? I see blonde, brunette, redhead... oh. Wait.
There is some gender diversity, the estimate is approx 30/70 men/women, some attendees with obvious physical disabilities (vision, mobility, etc) and undoubtedly many with invisible disabilities (is as true in the general population). Racial diversity is almost nil. Ideological diversity appears to be woefully lacking.

Glad you could attend and keep Justin company. I suspect the odds of a positive experience were improved dramatically by your presence. Looks like things are off to a flying start. The tweets have been very entertaining!

BTW, it is 'vacula-rhymes-with-hakuna', right? Not 'vacula-rhymes-with-dracula'? I've long been a bit fuzzy on this.

At least this is something approaching an argument. If you're 'privileged' you're not allowed to speak.
How do they know you are privileged if they won't let you speak?

Sometimes, when in depression, I will voice it at the Pit, or My FB official page, or any other outlet. I kinda understand the mechanics of doing so, and weirdly enough, it helps.

However, I don't use it to get victim points. I do it because it's a convenient way to let out my feelings (yes, we white cis-gendered males have these too).

But indeed, if Jen is depressed, I'd like to offer my support. All the best

/naïve?
I'm an expert at being depressed. One of the most effective ways to stay depressed is to play the "pity me, I'm so powerless" game. Feeling unable to affect your circumstances is a major contributor to depression. I do feel sorry for people in that cycle. Depression can easily lead to twisted thinking that blinds you to the way out of it.

Le wink.

Depression is a beast. That Jen chick has a pretty hilariously whackadoodle approach to dealing with it (if her choices are even conscious). I'm climbing up from chronic depression which spun super acute a few years ago. Healing has been slow but the process started being pretty ..fun, actually, the past several months. Kind of kicking up. Recently started incorporating new things, exercising body and brain (the brain stuff is thanks to here and all that's sparked off from here, body too in a way, started using an ecig again thanks to you bastards), been creating art for the first time in years uncounted. It's something of an awakening. Twitter/blogging is, for me, a possibility bubbling up as something which (surprising myself) I'm contemplating attempting, since I'm waking up and becoming willing to open up to some extent, instead of shutting down walling off going private+++ in the downward spiral.

Anyway, just found a clip from Henry Rollins which some of you might enjoy during the pause in WiS shenanigans, that I heard back in the 90s and just heard again for the first time since then, regarding depression (start at around 2:30 if you like)

(mmm eye and brain candy)
