At first I thought he was FTB, but when he referred to his earlier post I got the context. I'm not going to push too hard because there's not much to push against, but his position on 'harassment' is truly absurd, IMO. At this point, I'm just trying to demonstrate to onlookers that, yes indeed, this is the standard of 'harassment' some at FTB are using as well. Hence the 'being bothered' distinction, which I think has a lot of potential to it.

My goal here is to make a public point that what the pit does isn't harassment. It doesn't matter who's doing the "harassing". It could even be you.

Bit of a grey area and somewhat open to interpretation:

Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour intended to disturb or upset, and it is characteristically repetitive. In the legal sense, it is intentional behaviour which is found threatening or disturbing.

Seems that criticism of various public policies and statements, and individuals where they are related doesn’t qualify but that personal attacks and ad hominems do. Although that is somewhat of an impression from previous readings on the topic so I'm not quite sure where the dividing line is, but that seemed to be a salient one.

That's guaranteed. When he did his first blog post attacking the Slympit some of us pointed out he had made a big mistake. Either during or soon after the AI conference it will be open season on him and as they love guilt by association, the whole of AI. His only way out is the hope that as they are so UScentric and parochial they will write off Eire as irrelevant and ignore him.

I am unaware of any special skills that a cat would be trained for. But there are a fair number of people who put "service dog" coats on what are called comfort animals. To the best of my research capability, "comfort" animals do not qualify for the same exemptions that permit a seeing eye dog, helper monkey or an epilepsy detector dog into all venues. But some people abuse the service dog cloak just so that they can bring their animal everywhere. Service dogs are specially skilled and trained. "Comfort dogs," shit all over the place.

I am quite certain that was not your intended message, but this graphic doesn't exist in a void. It exists in a culture of pervasive and harmful blaming of fat people for wrongful spending, in a culture rife with narratives that it is only fat people who eat "junk food," and that consuming "junk food" is immoral.

I beg you to reconsider using these sorts of examples in future.

Talking about aspiring scientists: in my university tenure is not the end of ones worries. If one wants to have graduate students and post-docs work for one, then one must write proposals (many, many of them) to keep the money flowing. Things are highly competitive and I often loose sleep when I come to the end of a grant, specially if I have students or others funded off them. I do not understand how PZ manages to keep himself going, specially in the summer. Perhaps he cleans a lot of fish tanks. I have written on an average two or three proposals each year in the last six years since graduating from school. If I were to jet-set around the world giving ridiculous talks at atheist conferences and writing absolutely worthless junk on a blog, my university would kick me out ASAP.

On a totally unrelated topic: does anyone here watch tennis? I have been watching the French Open and enjoyed the women's games this week. The men's games are much faster and involve more power play, but the women's games (and the women) are also fun to watch.

It's because HE IS NOT A SCIENTIST and UMM does not have developmental biology program. They do get grants in other biology areas, but Myers does nothing in science. He just teaches some undergrad courses in basic developmental biology in a cow-town university that is, frankly, one step up from a community college.

There's nothing wrong with that, not everyone gets to go to (or teach at, or conduct research at) a Top-100 (world-wide) university. But it's hardly an elite institution.

In fact years ago he used to put his UMM faculty position listings on his old Science Blogs blog... One day I mentioned, to my wife, that it might kind of neat to get out research and go into the much easier position of teaching and there was a job at UMM with one of her old graduate school mates being a professor there...

Who is Sally Strange? I mean besides a Z-list blogger that until this post came up, I'd never heard of in my life despite being out-and-about (with breaks) in the atheist community since the halcyon days of FIDONET and USENET feeds in the late 1980s. IIRC the "rape threat incident" took place on a thread on TF's blog shortly after he left FTB last year. An anonymous poster made it and she responded to it with a paragraph of text within two minutes (timestamp 1 min after the post she was responding to IIRC). The timing and the length of her post made it suspicious.
