Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
Whatever Ophelia's source, ultimately she is the one who has chosen to use the information as a threat. She's also the one who used your first name in the comments. I think these are calculated, deliberate choices on her part, and not the random cognitive flailing about of dementia or mental illness. I could be wrong, of course, but my impression is that she knows quite well what she is doing, and what the consequences might be for others. Manipulative, duplicitous, and absolutely the worst of the bunch.Skep tickle wrote:I would guess that Stephanie Zvan was Ophelia's source (but that's just a guess).
I'd used my full name in communications behind the scenes with Michael Nugent & Monette Richards for Nugent's atheist/skeptic dialogue site, and know that each of them communicated with Stephanie Zvan about various aspects of the process. I also posted maybe 2-3 times more than a year ago at Stephanie's site using my real first name and, I think, the email address Ophelia used. (The one I've used at FtB for posting since then is long-defunct; I confirmed that before posting her email above. And she didn't use the email address I'd used for the Nugent effort.)
Seems less likely to have come from remote other posts at FtB, or from PZ's interactions with the group I belong to that had him give a talk here a couple of months ago.

I'd like to point out that I did not bring up anything at Ophelia's about my background & whether it might add something to my impression about her reaction to the news about Justin planning to attend the Dublin conference. She alluded to knowing my profession, after which I said that maybe that helped explain my concern.
As far as publishing her email, do it. First, I've never understood where people got the idea that someone maintains ownership of an email once they send it to me. At that point it's mine and I can do what I like with it. Of course, you don't publish emails of friends and innocents, but as Ophelia is dancing around outing and harassment, she can go fuck herself.
The answer as to what to do, based on my own experience and others, when they start this is simple. The rational, reasonable urge to not further provoke them doesn't work. As we've seem before, when Greg Laden, Ophelia Benson et. al. get it in their head to run this playbook, they do it. Because they want to. Because it gives them the illusion of power.
My suggestion is to publish, show what they are up to and generally pop them right in the nose. Once they get it into their head that the only tool they have left is harassment, the only way to derail them is to call their bluff, expose them to scrutiny and show that, whatever they are threatening, is no threat.
Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
Yes, and keep in mind the common denominator in the outing behavior of Melody Hensley and Ophelia Benson is Greg Laden.Rawrsome wrote:Ole Pineapple is letting you know she has your details.
Its the same as the tweet Melody sent to Mykuruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu cept OB has shown her cards so you know for sure she has them.
Just as an example of how it works in the real world, by the time Melody pulled that, I simply didn't give a fuck. I've experienced serious outing behavior in the past where people needlessly scared my then wife and went after employer with tall tales about me that were dismissed, but served the purpose of harassment.
At that point, and knowing she was in a huddle with Laden, when Melody pulled that direct threat, there was no way I wasn't going to call her on it. The way I called her on it was to put it out there in public for all to see, like turning the kitchen light on a cockroach. In fact, that 45 minute video I did was an exercise in holding my arms wide and saying "Hey everyone, look at what these fuckers are up to".
The response from them? Nothing. Fucking crickets. I imagine they had some furtive conversation which consisted entirely of "Now what?".
And to prove who was the dumbest of that bunch, it was Ophelia Benson who whined about it, which only got her some extra bonus mockery.
When they start threatening, the only thing that stops them is turning a fucking searchlight on them.

There's no way in hell your flight will cost that much.
You can get an airport bus into Busáras, the bus station in downtown Dublin, which is 1.2 km from where the conference is being held. It's a 15 minute walk. That's always a good way to orient yourself in a new city.

Like franc points out above, you are playing by FftB rules when you do this. The upside: According to my dentist, once I fork over $25K to deal with the Temporal Mandibular Joint disorder have surgery to reduce the bone ridges caused by a lifetime of pounding and pretty much cover all my teeth to protect the nerves from mechanical domestic violence, I'll be good as gold.
Reality: In the U.S. all insurance carriers tend to treat all dental procedures as cosmetic and therefore needless.
Fun fact: Waterpick Water Flossers are great, because the mechanical wear of attrition makes my interdental spaces tight enough to just cut floss like it's run through shears.
What I really have to do is buckle down and sell $25,000 worth of T-shirts on Zazzle. If only I had a uterus to e-beg with.
In any case, you've be amazed how hard it is to think when it flares up. Unless I really focus, I could end up agreeing with Cunt.

Then, unless Lusoma has been leaking like a third division goalkeeper (and, let's face it, Lusoma is at least second division), so much for "detente a la Nugent". Anyway, what's Ophelia's real name? Surely no-one is actually called "Ophelia Benson" outside of some low budget 1920's melodrama. "Miss Benson regrets, she's unable to lunch today..."

Happily, I've never had migraines and don't tend to suffer from headaches, although I'm told comparing a migraine to a headache shows no sense of scale. But yes, it can be pretty debilitating. The pain in the ass thing is I went to my dentist last week in agony and he took a bunch of x-rays. No breakage or decay, it's just the nerves, like someone getting a concussion right through a hard hat. Which makes you wonder about the actual utility of chronic pain and how that fits in with Intelligent Design.Zenspace wrote:Oof! The only thing comparable to this was in the years after I got into a disagreement with three members of a half-assed Harley club in Buffalo, NY for the sin of riding a Suzuki and, not to brag about the damage done to them, I ended up with two stab wounds, a broken nose and right eye orbit. For years after the bone fragments and scarring caused unbelievable sinus headaches. The pressure would build so, when it finally let go, people could hear the "squeeeeee" across the room. It eventually resolved.
Eh, what can you say? Life is pain and only kids and old Freethought Bloggers think they should be immune.

The question for the MRM is "what will we offer the powers that be in return for changes to the areas in which we believe men are disadvantaged". Femocrats have basically offered to not only shut up, but to help keep other fembots diverted. [Real money (and a little real power) soon puts a wedge between the "sisters".] That keeps the screetching down to a low mumur as far as the pollies are concerned, and they can live with that.
Until they can come up with the "outrage" that only menocrats can save them from, change is a long way off the radar of most pollies.
Unless you live in one of those utopias where rational decison making is made to maximise benefit to the community, rather than where the law makers lurch from one crisis to the next, putting out fires with badly concieved laws to score political points and keep their own arse in a seat. But people are rational animals, why would they live somewhere like that?

Also, I doubt he's aiming at getting to $160, 000. He doesn't come across as the kind of person that would rip people off.
The pressure needs to be kept on these people and better in be done in real life.
Once = making somewhat of a point about not letting oneself be excluded from the community by a bunch of thugs in cheap hipster glasses. Any more than that it's just a self-serving stunt.
Of course, this is just my opinion, as Andrew always says "YMMV"

Yep, you're right.jjbinx007 wrote:Skep Tickle: it seems Ophie is now using your first name on her blog - I checked and I don't recall you using it before she started.
You know, I've always been interested in game theory but never learned all that much about it.
My email reply to her, within the past 2 hrs, should help her understand that she doesn't hold all the cards and that 'tit-for-tat' is not the strategy she really wants to set in motion here.

Don't pretend otherwise, it's transparent as fuck.
Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
Franc indulged in elaborate name calling. But "personal" is more like what she's doing to Skep, semi-outing her by using her first name publicly, finding an email address for her via a friend, insinuating she knows more personal information she could out so Skep better watch what she says. She has a history of using her feelings as an excuse to tear people up in real life.
Franc's insults might be vivid and vicious but the things she tries to pull, due to her sensibilities, are supremely shitty. I can understand Franc's language way more than I can understand her actions.

@Zen. I also agree that OB playing the "out" game as blackmail is terribly shitty.

Don't worry, Brownian will be along shortly to denounce Ophelia's doxxing threats.
Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
He could easily catch a taxi from the bus station. Standard lugage isn't any good for lugging around city streets. But since Justin isn't used to flying, I will toss forth this one piece of advice. If you get a backpack, trots like that 1.2 km walk become an easy walk in the park. It's a great way to get around on the cheap.Cunning Punt wrote:You can get an airport bus into Busáras, the bus station in downtown Dublin, which is 1.2 km from where the conference is being held. It's a 15 minute walk. That's always a good way to orient yourself in a new city.

I just want to point out the irony of someone who talks a lot about being harassed and the harassment of women is now threatening to release the personal details of another woman for disagreeing with her.
For any visitors reading this who want to know why people have a problem with A+, this is it.
I'd love for someone to explain to me how this is reasonable, rational, or compassionate.

Factory standard tactic of FfTBers/Skepchicks/anti-vaxers-- Go after someones job.
*Never* had a Creationist or HIV Denier pull these stunts on me.
