We know they:
1. Manufacture unfounded fear.
2. They earn and promote from this fear by feeding it into their narrative.
3. Ignore the fact all prominent members of the community get threats and nasty pictures for time to time. They automatically give the reason as their 'brave fight' against 'mysogony' and proof it exists.
4. It is known that refusing to debate or discuss increases the troll rate. It is known playing the victim increases the troll rate. They do both very vocally.
So my questions are, do they have any evidence that any credible and persistent attacks come from genuine activists rather than trolls?
More importantly, do we have any evidence they have not manufactured these threats themselves?
I simply do not trust any of them to tell the truth so giving the benefit of the doubt on anything they say is not an option for me.
What do others here think and short of doxing (which I think is loathsome and should never be done) how could anyone show it to be true or not? Are they making stuff up?
We know they are making up stuff about here.
They claimed on Butterflies and Wheels that Jerry Conroy turned up again at the slymepit boasting of his acid tweet to Ophelia - and was congratulated by us on his action!
Then there was Jennifer Phillips, again on Butterflies and Wheels, who also reported that most of us were in favor of that incident and SDGs stupid post about Amanda Marcotte.
They make no attempt to correct any untruths that are posted there - for the simple reason, I guess, that insisting on the truth makes you look like a neutral, which is practically siding with the enemy in their eyes.
As for threats?
Well I have had an atheist/skeptic blog for about the past six years.
I've certainly received death threats on that blog during that time. I'd wager that almost every single atheist blogger will have picked up threats during the past decade - for the simple reason that there was one individual, Mabus, who made it his life's work to seek out every atheist blog he could find, and post the same nonsensical threats on them.
In fact you could say that the threats received by me should be taken far more seriously than those received by Watson. After all we know that Mabus had started turning up at atheist events and we know that the Canadian police took it seriously enough to arrest him and bring him to court.
Are the threats received by Watson real? I suspect that they are real, in the sense that there is bound to be some stupid teenager somewhere who realizes that he can spend ten minutes and get a 'result' for his trolling, with his picture or rape wish being widely publicised afterwards - as if it is something worthy of consideration.
The truth of the matter is that these trolling events are worthy only of a perfunctory deletion.
That's what I did with the Mabus death threats. And that's what almost every other atheist blogger did.
Mind you, if I thought I could make money out of not deleting them but crying in public about how scared they made me, I'd... well I'd still have deleted them (I do have some self-respect).
But clearly not everyone is going to do this.
There is a strange symbiotic relationship going on between the trolls and these professional victims.
I don't think the professional victims are themselves making up the MS Paint pictures or crude rape wishes. But I also think that most of them (for example Watson) do realize that they are dealing with 'threats' that are almost certainly just obnoxious teenage trolling. They know that the best thing to do is simply delete these posts and emails without giving the originators the buzz of a hyperbolic reaction.
In fact there is little doubt in my mind that their harvesting of troll posts as a cash crop is having a feedback into the trolling community and is simply amplifying the situation. They are creating more trolling of themselves and of other people in the community.
