Actually, come to think of it, I've never seen you and her in the same room...wait a minute!!!!!!

Well done again PZ - always being objective when being asked questions.

Now, on the topic of comedians, and dealing with utter crap in life, check out Tig Notaro.
It's an amazing, uncomfortable document, as Notaro relates her recent run of tragedy: her breakup with her girlfriend, the sudden death of her mother, her hospitalization with a bacterial infection and, of course, breast cancer – which has spread to her lymph nodes.
Now I haven't had a chance to listen to the set myself as I only found out about it a few minutes ago, but I've made it a point to see or listen to everything I can find with her.

Just been watching a few of Sean Carrolls vids from his convention he had back in october -

Moving Naturalism Forward
Discussion at the Moving Naturalism Forward workshop, October 2012. Participants include Sean Carroll, Jerry Coyne, Richard Dawkins, Terrence Deacon, Simon DeDeo, Daniel Dennett, Owen Flangan, Rebecca Goldstein, Janna Levin, David Poeppel, Massimo Pigliucci, Nicholas Pritzker, Alex Rosenberg, Don Ross, and Steven Weinberg.

kinda reminded me of the good old days of the mid naughties when we had beyond belief
heres a link to the playlist

for those who like interesting, informed discussion.

It has firmed my dislike of philosophers though

Everybody should listen to that, I think. It`s a work of art, that I think really reveals how much can be done in the format of stand-up comedy.

Nope. Someone stole the Preciousss.
I never did read those Lord Of The Rings books or anything else by Tolkein, but I know that's something to do with it. If it means Ewwood has been kidnapped, let's not call the cops!
Hobbit. Smaug (dragon). Wakes if loot lifted. Not important.

I hope Eucli's only problem is over-sharing, and that s/h/it doesn't leave some steaming pile here for the FTB dung beetles to parcel up and wheel back to Central Turdville to feed the other poo-flingers. Could get messy.
If they complain that she's being creepy to Jason, I'd actually be on their side on this one. Mind you, they must be honest and acknowledge that hardly anyone here wants her around. It would be a lie if they said that the Pit approves, condones, or supports her. She's probably got more people ignoring her than Oolon did.

They probably won't say much though. They shut up and go dumb whenever a woman does something stalkerish or harassy. Like with Justin G's stalker. Barely mentioned by the others, and I think it's because she's female. They will probably not hold Ewwood too accountable for what she does, even though there's the sexually creepy element to it. Imagine if Ewwood was a man and Jason a woman. There would already be at least half a dozen blogposts about it on the feminist blogging sites like ftb and skepchick.

Yep! That's the one. It totally cracked me up as a teenager listening to this song. As an ex-jew (who never even believed the god bullshit in the first place), I get to laugh and laugh at that song. I knew many princess types that went to the same synagogues etc. A ClusterB subculture of jewish female narcissists.

YouTube Embedding Tutorial

#255

Post by Scented Nectar »

Here is my YouTube Embedding Tutorial again for all the new people since the last one. This time the example video is an old animated Cheech & Chong song (yes, they sang sometimes), "Basketball Jones", from 1975, and probably nowadays considered politically incorrect because of all the oldstyle cartoon racial stereotypes (of whites too though, it's being fair and stereotyping everyone equally!). I had this on a Cheech & Chong record when I was a kid, but never saw the video until youtube.

Ok, the tutorial...

A youtube video url will come in two different types. The kind with the video code at the end, and the kind with the code in the middle. You need to strip off this extra stuff before putting the code (alone) between the youtube tags.

Here are two different urls going to the same video:

Code: Select all

code at the end:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIbp5C-5WXM

and code in the middle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIbp5C-5WXM&list=PLE28217B1D596EDA6&index=16
Always get rid of everything up to and including, the first (or only) equal sign "=".
The stuff after it is the code, but note in the second example, there is extra stuff after the code.
The extra stuff after always begins with an "&" followed by whatever extra stuff.
Strip off the &'s and the extra stuff following at the end.

To sum it up, just keep the part between the first "=" and the first "&" (if there is one).

We are left with just the code: JIbp5C-5WXM so...

Code: Select all

Now put that inside youtube tags:

The above tag and code will become this when posted:

I'd like Eucliwood more if she wasn't so prone to preach to the choir. We get it, Eucliwood, we do.

Likewise if she wasn't so eager to act the fainting couch whenever a particular offensive (read: hypocritical) post from the FTB narrative pops up. There's no need to get so worked up. Just get your shit in gear, Eucliwood, and do what I do; bleach your brain and hope you don't have the stupidity to look there again. No, but seriously, it's easier when you've calmed down enough to see the ripples. You start seeing just how ridiculous what they're saying really is and you laugh how you could have become so worked up over something so stupid.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying you shouldn't get mad. Get mad. However, if you notice in your response that you sound more like a neurotic histrionic of the A+ variant, then stop. Seriously.

If you can master these simple steps, you can be salvaged. You may become a misogynist sexist Slymepitter yet. ;)

(Honestly, there's no need to respond to posts from FTB or A+ in the most exasperated manner possible. Especially not here.)

Jerry Coyne Coming To Atlanta!!

#264

Post by Al Stefanelli »

Would you like to see Jerry Coyne?

Two of my local Freethought groups are sponsoring an evening with Dr. Jerry Coyne! This event will be held at the Hilton Garden in Peachtree City, GA, on Saturday, 2 February 2013.

Tickets are only fifteen bucks, so if you can get to the Atlanta area, you’ve really got no excuse not to attend.

Besides, I'll be attending this event, too. This is my home town, so if you can make it, I'd love to meet you, in person. :)

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Screw it. Let's not use words ever again. Using words ERASES people. Stop it!
Do they even know any Transfolk? Because the ones I know would not give a fuck and would probably be offended that someone would presume them so fragile as to need protection from words relating to reproduction.
Cissexism? Seriously? Soon it's all going to sound like baby talk. :(
I know a couple of trans people and they're totally cool, but the internet "trans activists" are a completely different story. There are some who just get off on throwing a huge fit if you acknowledge in any way that they were born of the opposite sex they present as, and do not have the corresponding chromosomes or organs. They're basically outrage junkie mental cases.

I would just evaporate. I run warm to begin with.

I can't take the heat. Anything over 70℉/21.11C and I'm miserable, over 75℉/23.88C and I feel ill.

Give me cool misty fog. San Francisco has the best climate on Earth, and I live by the ocean, which is the area with the least amount of sun. It gets cold (the tourists think "California" and are always freezing), but not so cold it snows. Winter means pouring rain.
I like the rain, but I adore the fog.

The fog here is often so thick, the entire Golden Gate Bridge disappears right in front of you.
GG Bridge Fog.jpg
Many days it looks like the end of the earth is a few blocks away, the streets and sky fade to solid white, because the ocean is enveloped in fog.

The fog horns sound like an orchestra warming up, most nights that is the sound I fall asleep to.

This is why I live here.
I can relate to that.... I can tolerate a few more degrees than you but only a few more.

I live near the habour water and near a large green park. Once summer passes many morning it's foggy...I love the fog too.

it's 2:30 am and a southerly change is coming through but at midnight it was still 35oC.... hard for me to sleep in that.

The dogs BTW seemed to cope better than I did. My mini Fox terrier (Foxie)is 14 years old and on days like this I follow her lead as she has this clever ability to find the coolest spot and simply spread out on her side. I copy her nearby.

I kept an eye on them... and my goldfish in the pond and my bonsais..so we had opportunities to play with water.

At dinner they got a defrosted raw chicken drum stick. Normally I take the chill off in the micro. They enjoyed that.

Actually, I take back what I said about you being Mr Logic. When it comes to Viz characters, I think Roger Irrelevant would be more appropriate. You started by saying to Eucliwood the Barking Fetus that gratuitous and personal insults are counterproductive; I pointed out how you had referred to CommaderTuvok as 'Cabinboy Toothless Fuck'. At which you offered a defence of essentially, "Well, it's not gratuitous because he started it!" (Frankly, I'm amazed you just didn't go the whole hog and say that it was also because Tuvok has the lurgy and loses fights to girls.) And then you went on to likening your response to that of Britain's declaring war on Germany...because...because, um, it works on the same principles as thermonuclear bomb does to the sun.

Shitting heck Steersman, you really are like a strange High Street Jesus.

I like the new, slimmed-down thread (oops, was that sizeist?)

On another board I frequent, which is usually pretty sensible and low on baboonity, I stumbled upon an argument wherein a poster was asked why they had posted a certain link (I didn't click it as it was apparently NSFW, and involved cats) and their response was "Well it was from Pharyngula and I trust PZ!" Oh the irony. Should I engage in a little bit o'teaching?

I was thinking about trigger warnings, and trying to put my finger on why they annoy me so much. I think it's the underlying arrogance: the assumption that other people ought to change make the world a more comfortable place for you and your particular "triggers". There is a particular advert I've been seeing lately which triggers me something rotten, but I accept that I can't enforce my standards on the rest of the damn world, and avert my eyes. When the subject matter is truly contentious I can appreciate the intent to forewarn people so that they not be inordinately upset, but these warnings are ridiculously overused (and becoming more so). I did once see someone (not on A+ though they would have fitted right in) demand trigger warnings for pictures of spiders because they were phobic...

Ha!

If you think Tina calling that guy's mother a whore was enough to get them enraged I dread to imagine what's going to happen when they read the section about breastfeeding, taken from the same book.
http://m.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/20 ... y-comedian

One of my 500 nicknames for my daughter is Midge, which is short for Midget, because she was a very small baby. She was born a week early and a little underweight at 5lb 7oz. My obstetrician suggested the next day at her bedside visit that perhaps I hadn't rested enough during my pregnancy and that was why she was so small. "What a cunt," I thought to myself in what was either a flash of postpartum hormones or an accurate assessment of my doctor's personality.
Tina Fey has been vilified on the radfem sites for years, yet oddly her good friend (the far less funny)Amy Poehler is worshipped. Yeah I don't get it either. I've read Tina's book and while she describes herself as a feminist, she has absolutely zero patience for the SJW types. She'd be more accurately described as an equity feminist.

And I loved the episode (let's face it, it's a soap opera) where the geneticist was arguing with the commenters about the meaning of 'phenotype', and they were accusing him of not knowing what he was talking about and not being a real geneticist. That was, until PZ was forced to step in to say that actually he knew the geneticist in real life, and that he really did know what he was on about, and was using 'phenotype' properly!

Quite funny.
Note how long PeeZus let the guy get abuse for "not knowing what he's talking about" and called a liar when he said he was a geneticist.

Comrade Physioproffe is going to go mental about that. Expect a blog post soon featuring gratuitous over-use of the letter "e".
I honestly don't think he noticed. I may be the only one who caught it.
I'd like to ad that I was ambivalent about Hagel's selection at first because of his history of anti-gay statements, but that was 15 years ago or so and he's since apologized. He has IMO all of the right positions on the military-more dove than hawk, does not believe that Israel is part of the the USA.

I'm not. I have other things more pleasurable to do, like "fuck a rabid wolverine" and "lick a running woodchipper".

I love how they're telling Tina Fey how to be a feminist.

But then, Tina Fey actually DOES stuff, instead of blogging about it. so there's that.

Come on Dawkins! If you're here, tell us. We won't brag about having the bestest atheist in the pit!

As for PZ, yes, we know you're here and we'd rather you didn't make yourself known. Make sure you go on the other side of your bulletproof glass before you fire shots at us. That's the best way to make sure you really hurt us!

<- Al, welcome to my world. I own a short-haired Chihuahua and Whippet mix. She's shed enough fur in the past 6 months to create several new versions of her. But she's too cute for any of us to get angry (we now own a dozen of those lint rollers).

A slymepitter near me! I'm in Davis, but my little sister lives in Daly City. I absolutely LOVE The City and always have.

Yeah, there's also a Pug/Boston Terrier mix, as well as a Rat Terrier. The fur flies, Renee, but every hair is worth it. :)

Mileage seems to vary a lot on this. So far, I find it's like listening to a babbling brook compared to the fingernails-on-the-chalkboard effect of Steers or oolon.
Steers is...verbose, shall we say, but the 'pit is better for having him. We're a broad, err, church, err, big tent, and we like to piss outwards, I think.

Upon reaching $5K can we move on to funding a date between Justin and Eucliwood?
We'll need to pay for a camera a crew and probably some high-powered legal representation too.

I had a group of friends who would celebrate "Pornim" instead of "Purim". They would also play a drinking game where people took turns reading from the worst slashfic they could find. The goal was to keep a straight face as long as you could while reading, and additionally everyone would take a drink at certain points (every use of the word "throbbing" for instance). I think there was a specific slashfic that they used multiple times because it was so horrible but I forget which one. If I remember or find out I could post it ;)

They did on October 9th

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Screw it. Let's not use words ever again. Using words ERASES people. Stop it!
They are painting themselves into a grammatical corner. I wonder how long it will be before no one on A+ can comfortably use any words at all, and they are reduced to simply staring at their screens, fingers twitching as they desperately try to come up with a sentence that cannot possibly be inferred as something "erasing" or "ignoring" or "denying" or "shaming". Actually, the sooner that happens the better.
Read the wiki for Fahrenheit 451. It wasn't the government that demanded books be burned.

TedDahlberg wrote: I believe what disturbs me, beyond the hyperbole, is the exclusivity of it. "You're and ally, she's not an ally," and "you're a more powerful ally than those other allies". It's like a goddamn game of Pokemon! I obviously accept that some people have more resources than others and are therefore more practically useful. But when I hear someone referred to as a "powerful ally" I get a definite sense that some animals are more equal than others.
I hadn't thought of that, but the SJW's use of "ally" has bothered me before.
The main cause of unease for me is how they have a shit-ton of rules someone has to follow to be considered an ally, like being an ally is some sort of privilege (heh) for the ally instead of a mutually benefitial relationship.

It also bothers me how they always talk about what the ally can do for them, but never about how they can help the ally. Given the multiple definitions of "ally" I guess this point is debatable, but I see an alliance as a mutual relationship. If I'm your ally but you won't support me in my time of need, it's a shitty alliance.
Kassiane wrote: Because of the energy investment, I unapologetically expect the world of allies-nothing less. I’m not going to lie, I am hard on people who want to be on my team. This isn’t a game-it’s about my rights and those of my friends to live as equals. This is beyond important for us & if someone wants to play ball on my team, they need to bring their A game. This isn’t Calvinball in the back yard-this game is for reals and the outcome will effect every moment of the rest of our lives.

So if finding and training allies is such a phenomenal pain in the ass, why work with them at all? Frankly, because we need them. No civil rights struggle was won, no major progress made, without some folks with power standing beside the oppressed and lending their voices. We are fighting an uphill battle against a strong power gradient. Allies can use their privilege to lend legitimacy and to somewhat relieve the power imbalance.

Another interesting post is http://www.anamardoll.com/2012/11/decon ... -ally.html.

With those many rules and regulations, and especially after reading Kassiane's opinion about training allies like s/h/it's talking about a dog, I can't see how anyone would want to their ally. Maybe that's why finding them is "such a phenomenal pain in the ass"
