I'm not sure whether you're referring specifically to ERV's (Abbie's) problems with Laden, or just a chronology of the things that have happened on the old ERV that the slyme pit is an extension of.

If it's the latter than you might want to browse through the wiki that has been set up to chronicle all the FtB/Skepchick nonsense, link (you can also edit, and add to it if you want to, as long as you have citations).

I won't bore you with the details of the laden thing, unless that's what your looking for.

It's the Laden campaigning to shut down her site to NatGeo and then turning up at her fucking work is what I'm thinking of, but I notice Pharwongula hasn't documented it.

The National Geographic situation perplexes me. A while back Abbie Smith and some of her commenters made some very specific and terribly offensive remarks related directly to me (as usual) but that also brought in a completely innocent bystander, someone potentially vulnerable to this sort of cyberstalking, and the only reason that person was brought into their comments was because of a vague and ephemeral on-line association with me (we wrote similar posts and linked to each other). Previously I never thought complaining to management about the “slimepit” was worthwhile or appropriate, but this time I did make a complaint because of the potential damage to a third party. They got back to me with a request for information on which “threads” on ERV seemed to be offensive in general (not just in relation to me and colleagues) so I gave them a list of four threads that I thought fit the bill and then didn’t really hear back from them. More recently, someone up in the administration of SB.com/NGS asked me for that information again, as they had misplaced it. I suppose if it took 30 years to discover the source off the Nile something like dealing with this might take months.

By the way, I also made a complaint about that specific issue, at the same time (along with a couple of other points of interest) to the chair of Abbie Smith’s academic department. Like it or not, this is how blatant professional misconduct is often managed in academia. The expected outcome of such an email might be a follow up phone conversation and a sit down talk between the student and adviser or chair. Oddly, within about 24 hours of sending an informative email to that Professor, I heard on the internet that I had done this! There are no ways to explain that without reference to some sort of unethical behavior, or worse.

The reason I mention these two things is this: One of the problems we have in dealing with offensive behavior like this is that not everyone else who is structurally connected to it, and thus passively supportive of it, is on board with dealing with it or even recognizing it. Abbie Smith is running the “slimepit” from her academic department in Oklahoma, and her department chair is either in on it (is he one off her commenters?) or unaware of it, or knows about it but thinks it’s cute, or something. NGS/SB.com is running a “family friendly” operation in which the word “c*nt” is used something like a thousand times, physical threats have been made, and direct and repeated attacks on numerous people, many slanderous, have been made.

I sent Seed Media a letter on June 28.

I know that Seed Media has previously been made aware of the four comment threads at ERV that are in gross violation of the ScienceBlogs code of conduct. I know that they were made aware of the problems in these threads quite some time ago. I have been patient in waiting for Seed to live up to the commitments it has made to the public and to other individuals. I’m not patient anymore.

It was exactly my intent, and the intent of people pressuring Russell Blackford and others, to cut off all social support for that inexcusable behavior. Credit for that working, to whatever extent it does, goes to the people setting these limits (yes, me included), not to anyone in the slime pit. That thing has been festering for a year unchecked.

Anyways, that's just part of it, I think. OK, here’s the thing about the slime pit. I am not familiar with it from a personal level, only what has been written about it and discussed in other places. Perhaps I should investigate it, but if it is anything like how any other forum operates (and I’ve moderated and administered several on the Phpbb and Delphi systems going back ten years), there is a mix of several different personalities there, regardless of the general lean. There are even some liberals that hang out at conservative forums, and it is not uncommon at all to have atheists on Christian boards or vice verse. If so, you’re way off mark. If I were offering a dissertation, or a wiki type article, or perhaps covering these things for a news outlet, perhaps citations would be apropos. The same goes for A Voice for Men. Obviously it's a article of faith that AVfM is a ravenous hate site filled with rapey guys, guys who hate, who hate and rape and rapety-rape-rape.

Although, I haven't seen it. Do they get some guys fresh from a burn? Sure. Do they get guys who are venting a mile-a-minute because someone is finally listening to them? That to.

But hate, much less pathological hatred of women? Not a bit. At best, you can say the atmosphere in that regard is of an overwhelming sense of betrayal ("But you said this would benefit us too").

When evidence is given of this, it's invariably either someone with an obvious political fund-raising agenda like The Southern Poverty Law center that asserts that it kinda sort of can be sometimes hateful or you get the usual "the world is run by 12 year old trolls in comments, apparently" evidence. Or you get someone like Pickles Dillahunty who knows "sick MRA bullshit" because...uh...well...someone told him and no, he doesn't have time to figure out who.

The reason that Atheism Plus and the RadFem Etsy drinking club describes AVfM as a hate site is the same reason The Westboro Baptist Church "hates fags": They are so fucking nuts that the only social cohesion they can have is through representative boogeymen. Fred Phelps thinks he's God's ventriloquist dummy and Atheism Plus is all about a narrow and self-serving definition of "social justice" and so to hide that they are just all about hate, they have to hate the hate, even if they have to project like motherfuckers and generally make shit up.

One day they will refer to AVfM as a hate site and 1. Actually pull up a quote that isn't quote mined 2. Pull up something that is actually central to Men's Rights rather than a comment by some retarded troll at the bottom of a thread 3. Not ascribing to AVfm something they've pulled from the man-o-sphere in general, like Pick Up Artists or simply out their asses and 4. Not something that they think is unconscionable that they claim AVfM does which is, not incidentally, something Plussers do more and better such as harassment, lying, doxing and generally being a bunch of "end justifies the means" psychopaths in training.

Absolutely. The core of being a sceptic is having the will to change your mind when presented with evidence that conflicts with your previous opinion. It's hard. No one likes to be wrong, and admitting it in public is even tougher. Dillahunty, however, has been an out and proud believer from day one of A+. I don't think he has the balls to reverse his position. In a week or so, this will all have vanished behind a cloud of bullshit-scented pixie-dust.

My take is that it would depend to a large degree as to how much you have invested into being right, and that could take many forms such as how much an authority you consider yourself to be and so on.

I remember once forcing myself to give an apology to a six year old in a room full of adults. Very annoying for me, but I thought it was the right thing to do since I had reprimanded her earlier with the same audience.

(As an aside, I was deliberately teaching myself a lesson and I felt that otherwise I would have been letting her down. This child had once demonstrated her complete faith in me, by putting her hands into the air and stepping off into space at the top of a long flight of stairs, with the absolute certainty I would catch her.)

I used to do some volunteer work at a house established to home people with developmental/intellectual disorders, some of them in electric wheel chairs. I used to pop in every second wednesday evening and fart arse around with play dough (home made).
