I certainly am not prepared to “give them the benefit of the doubt†as there are, obviously, more than a few of them who are totally off the wall and out to lunch. In which case it is entirely acceptable to be asking where they are coming from and which of the many feminist ideologies they happen to subscribe to. But that is, I think, quite a bit different from “not being charitable to any feminist’s argumentâ€.JackRayner wrote:Simply put, when a self-proclaimed feminist claims they're for "equality", I'm not going to be giving them the benefit of the doubt...Steersman wrote:Interesting video there – thanks.JackRayner wrote:

Reminds me of having given an ex-girlfriend a book titled “Pornography for Womenâ€. And in it were a bunch of captioned photos of men in no-more revealing or obscene poses than a no-shirt or open-shirt pose. And the captions from the guys were things like “I can watch the Super Bowl anytime; it’s more important that we watch The Bridges of Madison County togetherâ€. And, “Let’s invite your mother over to stay as long as she wantsâ€. And, “As long as I have two legs, you’ll never have to take out the garbage again.†....AndrewV69 wrote:This is a "Chill Girl". Did anyone catch the next-to-last SGU podcast?
Steve Novella mentioned that he had to deal with someone arguing about Queen Bee, and he demolished their arguments and their "hate". Does anybody know who this person was?
Also, they all had a really good laugh at the guy who got knocked over and killed after he dressed up in a "Bigfoot" costume. I've got no problem with that myself, but don't the Baboons have really strict standards about jokes and what people should find amusing?

Thanks muchly for the link and the data sets to download.barkbarkwoof wrote:The raw data for the National Crime Victimization Survey are available via NACJD. The raw set breaks down rape vs. sexual assault into separate variables.
In the DS4 incident data set, V4094 records rape, V4095 records attempted rape and V4096 records sexual assault. V4241 and V4256 can be used to crosstab to find rapes perpetrated by attackers unknown to the victim.
Unfortunately, downloading the data requires registration, the DS4 data set is 50MB, and the survey is weighted. Calculating the rate of stranger rape from the data available is nontrivial and would require either access to statistics software ($$$$$) or a spreadsheet and a fair bit of skill.
Out of curiosity though, or as a point of reference: what do you mean by “weighted†in that case? Some extrapolations or assumptions made? Any indications as to exactly how they are weighted?
Thanks.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Weighted sampling is a statistical technique used to compensate for non random sampling within a survey. Sample weights must be taken into account when analyzing a weighted survey or the results will be meaningless.Steersman wrote:Out of curiosity though, or as a point of reference: what do you mean by “weighted†in that case? Some extrapolations or assumptions made? Any indications as to exactly how they are weighted?
In this case, the dataset states that 17 out of 570 respondents report having been raped but the rate of rape is not 17/570 =~ 2.9% because that calculation implicitly assumes that all 570 responses are of equal weight (equally important). Getting the correct result means either doing stats math that's above my education or using a tool, such as SPSS, that can handle weighting automatically. The weight of every sample must be considered to get the right answer.
The survey documentation goes into detail about how the samples are weighted and which variables are used to find each sample weight.
Anyone with either a better stats background or access to stats software can figure this out but it's not trivial to do without either.

Maybe we can agree that it is not appropriate for either of us to do that and that we should focus only on the logic and evidence for our respective positions." Statistics software is not necessarilly $$$$. R is absolutely free. I've never used it, though.barkbarkwoof wrote:Calculating the rate of stranger rape from the data available is nontrivial and would require either access to statistics software ($$$$$) or a spreadsheet and a fair bit of skill.
Thanks to Spence for proving my approximation from before. I had a more elegant proof, of course, but it wouldn't fit in the margins...
also, I guess if I'd specified that n is a positive integer and x is a probability this thread would be about 5 posts shorter.

From PZs dungeon:
Hate you for-fucking-ever! You do not own atheism. I will do whatever I can to show everyone what an ass and a moron you are... FOR MY ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE!
(PS - this in not a threat of violence and I will not send you threats or emails of animals fucking or anything. In fact, I will not even tell your boss what a douche you are... even though this is what you do to other people. It will all be online and open and I will always simply be John D.)

Hey PZ you asshat fuckwad! I didn't even know what an MRA was when you accused me of being one. Your baboons called me a rapist, child abuser, wife abuser, and misogynist when I made a civil comment. I didn't swear or personally attack anyone and when I tried to defend myself with a rebuttal you banned me.John D One of those obtuse MRA assholes; too stupid to tolerate.

Apart from being the leading contender for this week’s Godwin Awards, it should be obvious, at least to those not committed to the same agenda, that there’s just a small amount of disparity between the elements of your own “parallel-logic†analogy: X [“go die in a fireâ€; “have a porcupine shoved up your assâ€; "too ugly to be raped"; "if I were a woman, I'd kick you in the cunt"] = “The Holocaustâ€. Don’t know about the others here, but that really doesn’t work for me ....Michael K Gray wrote:Apparently, Hitler was forced to say that he "sort-of" regretted some of the excesses of the Holocaust.windy wrote:Are you really that naïve or is it an act? This retconning of the atheist blogosphere is not "better" at all and allows the spiral of stupid to go on indefinitely:
"Anyone who would say/condone X is a horrible hater with nothing positive to contribute!"
"But wait, didn't you say/condone something very similar to X not so long ago?"
(skip a few rounds of denial/excuse)
"Well it turns out I did, but that was not my finest hour / I'm not proud of that / aren't I awesome for admitting it!"
Weak.
So that's alright then by Steersman?
Kinky; get many to take you up on your offer? ....Fuck me with a fish-fork.

This is your last chance, as I write this. Any more posts of this nature and you will have your very own thread to post in (see the already created place, "The Sweaty Balls of Nostradamus" and nowhere else.xjustos2 wrote:<stupid shit deleted>

PZ is an attention whore and a believer in an impossible utopia. He is like the Ophra Winfrey and Doctor Oz of atheism. He is a destructive, abusive, hypocritical, loose cannon and he is the antithesis of what I find to be great in most other atheists. I can think of no person better to revile (other than Ophelia Benson... haha)Steersman wrote:Don’t get mad; get even ....John D wrote:From PZs dungeon:

Thanks for the link; probably more complicated than I’m able to manage or is justified by what I want to use it for, but maybe later ...disumbrationist wrote:Statistics software is not necessarily $$$$. For those who hadn’t hidden the relevant posts, the context should have made that evident ...also, I guess if I'd specified that n is a positive integer and x is a probability this thread would be about 5 posts shorter.
About 6 posts shorter .... :-)

Well, we all know where this comes from. This comes from exactly the same place the anti-gay policies and even the supposed mitigation, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, come from – the insistence of some civilians to make the military dance to their religious tune.
The theists have a nice grip on the military. "God, Country, Corps" is what I heard plenty during my time in. If DADT got overturned, I don't see why this wouldn't be though. This being a health care issue, it's really up to the civilian leadership. What control does the lay service person have over their healthcare options? Not enough to paint them as misogynists, or responsible for this policy...

Really, I'm dismayed by the cowardly responses coming from people over the Muslim uprising instigated by this crappy movie. Attacks on free speech for the appeasement of murderers have to met head on, I'm sick of the bullshit.
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
I would certainly be sympathetic to the argument that at least PZ has lost the thread – something that Dick Strawkins agrees with in pointing to a credible post by Myers some time ago. Although his “our people†has a faint whiff of “let my people go†....John D wrote:PZ is an attention whore and a believer in an impossible utopia. And even Benson has her moments in rallying the troops against the rather egregious depredations of the religious, although I think she has a number of quite problematic blind spots on the topics of feminism and language, but none of us are perfect, are without "clay feet" of our own ....
