John D wrote: Where are you getting this information. I just read the bill and it uses the”viability “ standard like Roe did.
TL;DR: My interpretation is based more on 'the law of unintended consequences', than an absolute defect in the proposed amendment.

I got the lead from an article quoting Stacey Abrams-- saying that abortions are the solution to the high price of gas & food: "“Having children is why you’re worried about your price for gas. It’s why you’re concerned about how much food costs."https://twitter.com/DanODonnellShow/sta ... 3420120066

The article was by Patty McMurray at Gateway Pundit (admittedly a VERY slanted source.) The relevant bit said:
"In Michigan, Proposal 2 would actually change the state’s constitution and allow women to abort their babies up until the moment of birth. It would also essentially give anyone the right to abort a baby and allow children to abort their babies without the consent of their parent or parents."
I thought "essentially" might-be a weasel word, doing too-much work.

So I checked Ballotopedia: https://ballotpedia.org/Michigan_Propos ... ive_(2022)

The text of Prop 2 says it would invalidate all existing state laws which contradict the amendment. It would expand the cause for 'post-viability' abortion-- from 'physical health' of the mother to include 'mental health'. And it would ban prosecution for abortion-- for a somewhat open-ended list of people: "prohibit prosecution of an individual, or a person helping a pregnant individual, for exercising rights established by this amendment"

The ONLY thing I'm contending-- is that this wording is written in a vague-enough way... that it creates ambiguity over Who may decide to conduct an abortion. I'm not saying the amendment would for-sure be interpreted in the worst way possible.

For reference... the "mental health" clause brought to my mind a specific case:

A mentally ill career-criminal in a mental health program-- had sex with a retarded woman in the same program, who consented (to whatever extent she was capable of consenting.)

The retarded woman's parents and caretaker-sibling advised her to get an abortion. Her doctors were concerned that she was incapable of understanding the situation, raising a child, or getting-thru pregnancy without physical harm to herself.

But the retard insisted "He [the criminal] loves me. I want a baby."

Despite professing his love & desire for her; & intention to marry & take-care of her... the criminal's actual immediate concern was to avoid being charged with rape. He insisted that everyone was racist-- because he was black & the baby would be bi-racial. Despite the protestations of her medical experts and her legal custodians-- the retard insisted on having the baby.

The criminal fled-- and no one was eager to bring-him-back into the child's life. The retard kept the baby daughter & tried to raise her until at-least age 5 (maybe 7?)... when The State determined the child had severe emotional and developmental problems from being raised in an unsuitable environment. The child was taken-away & placed in foster care.

Personally-- I am not of one-mind about this case. Is it better to err on this side of her-body-her-[impaired]-choice? Or to prevent a tragedy by allowing her family & medical staff to over-ride her autonomy?

But I do know for-sure that this is not an isolated case... I recall a famous case of a black woman who was ordered by the court to be sterilized-- declared incompetent-- because she kept having an enormous number of kids... which she demonstrably couldn't care-for. And that case is widely seen as a legal abomination today.

For me-- the big red flag is that this is Michigan we're talking-about-- the Whitmer state-- the Covid lockdown dystopia. It's also the land of some hideous court decisions about child support (men forced to pay for children which weren't theirs.) That state is not to be trusted in these matters.

Doe v. Bolton, Roe's twin sister ruling, held that “physical, emotional, psychological, familial, age” considerations are all factors related to "health." It provided a loophole for 100% of elective late-term pregnancies. MI's Prop 2 does the same.

Very slick... might be the best I've ever seen...

The polling sites report that Kari Lake is one-or-two points head of Katie Hobbs, polling in the high 40's.

But they leave-out Lake's real opponent: Lake is absolutely crushing the fake news media-- who are polling at about 7%, according to Gallup.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/403166/ame ... d-low.aspx

I think it's really funny that the progressive/media thinks they're dunking-on Kari Lake... when they mention her political past.

She left the Republican party in 2006 because of disenchantment over the WMDS-in-Iraq invasion.

She became a registered Democrat the day after Barack Obama first won the Iowa Caucus... and donated money to his campaign.

Then she went back to the Republicans in 2012-- before Trump.

How on Earth is that a scandalous record?

"As a kid in the 80's you were inspired by Reagan, so you followed his early career into broadcasting. But the Iraq debacle disenchanted you, so you left-- looking for Hope & Change in Obama. When Obama delivered less change than you hoped, you returned to the GOP, but favored a new generation unsullied by the Bush/Cheney/Rove/Hillary neocon war machine. Then when the covid regime emerged-- you led peaceful protests against mask mandates in schools & mandatory ineffective corporate treatments. Then you were censored on Twitter for saying true things about Covid. And your deviation from the liberal-news hivemind caused you trouble in the newsroom. Shouldn't you be ashamed?!!!!"

I'll admit I'm conflicted. I don't think viable babies should be electively aborted in the 3rd trimester, but I also don't think the women who'd electively abort their baby in the 3rd trimester should be having babies in the first place.

Just add +2 to every Republican, and you'll be mostly spot on on election night.

RCP now predicts a 52 GOP majority in the Senate. And that's with Mark Kelly surviving.

When I first saw Sen. John Kennedy of LA, I said, 'twenty years ago, someone like him would've been a Democrat.' And it turns out that 15 years ago, Kennedy was a Democrat.

1) Whatever "real" means banks, ledgers, courts, and law enforcement must qualify. Without those things I have no idea what it means for money to be real.
2) The relationship between a household or an individual and those things is nothing like the relationship between the government and those things (two out of four ARE the government).
3) Analogues for those individual/household relationships at the level of the US government do not exist (maybe the gold standard, which was abandoned long before MMT entered the stage).

I said from the get go I know almost no economic theory, but those 3 points seem pretty obvious. It follows that the government budget uses a lot of the same words you and I use when dealing with our finances, but otherwise has no similarities. That's the beginning and end of my agreement with MMT theorists. Wouldn't mind a more technical conversation/argument about it for the sake of learning. It might be a nice change of pace from bickering with FTP.

I accept your point. But, despite that, maybe it's worth considering ways that an individual/household IS analogous to US gov. For example-- there's no limit on the number of promises a person can 'print'. And there might-be an optimal number of promises one might make... to get what one wants. But then also a point of diminishing-returns and... beyond that... default.

Or-- howabout those 'Shark Tank' tv shows... there's (nearly) no limit to the number of business-ideas an individual can think-up. And there may be several different shows-- each with several different Investors. And there's no-limit to how-much of one's future business-- one can promise-away to the Investors. But... it's probably a bad idea to pitch the maximum-number of ideas (good and terrible)... to the maximum number of Investors on the maximum number of Shows... promising-away the Maximum-future-share of each business deal...

(Insert the US Gov throwing money at Vax manufacturers and Ukraine and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and Building Bridges and Universal Basic Income or whatever... with Japan, China, UK, huge pension funds, and Investment Banks serving as the Investors in these endeavors)

The Inventor might still be technically 'solvent' on the ledger ... since he's only pitching Ideas he actually-had (and pre-selling a reasonable number of Ideas he's sure to have tomorrow & beyond)... to an actual number of Investors... and he's not promising-away more-than 100% of each deal...

But... had he exercised discretion & quality-control... the inventor could-have optimized his endeavors into a few big Winners-- instead of sinking everyone's time & effort into many many unprofitable Bad Idea quagmires. And getting a stinky reputation as a guy nobody wants to do business with.

In the morning, Project Veritas released that video of an aide to Mayor Eric Adams... talkin' shit.

The mayor's office issued a statement supporting their guy, and denouncing Veritas' journalistic trickery.

In the afternoon-- Veritas released 'Part 2' of the video. Ohhh man. "Covid is over" and a huge number of cop, firefighter & nurse jobs remain empty... but they're still demanding the jab because: "fuck 'em".

Before the day ended, the mayor's office fired their guy.

I just did something I have not done for many years, except to remove doxxing. I edited the post above to fix the formatting.

My no editing rule is going out the window here for a very simple reason. After a few months more than ten years, I am finally planning to close this down for posting this coming weekend.

The place is a complete travesty of what it used to be, and serves no purpose. I get the odd laugh from Ol' Burzho and a couple of others, but The Sloop John D., Cowboy Cavvers, and Service Dogshit have ruined it for lots of others, as evidenced by PMs I get, and looking at the table in my previous post, we have very few people visiting now, and very few of them posting (not even Steerzo any more!)

So, sometime this weekend I'm going to make The Pit read-only. I'll leave it up, and I'll spend some time collecting links to images posted, and work on creating a gallery topic, but it'll be a low priority.

I'm retiring in December, at just over 63 yo, so this seems like time to put this to bed.

Brive is top poster - if we are going by sheer number. But I think that others may have him beat if you go by the number of posts per day. Or even number of pictures per post or perhaps length (as the Actress said to the Bishop).

I think I expressed my condolences at the last rumour of demise...so repetition is not necessary (and rarely appreciated).

Years ago, when I was in a rough emotional state from being dumped by my ex, broke, & literally at-risk of freezing in my van... I received many generous offers of aid from pitters. Including, as I recall, Lsuoma.

If I were certain that I was made-of solid stuff... I would&should-have accepted help... to get myself back on good footing. But I felt I had to refuse: specifically-because I didn't-know if I was solid or mushy. I needed to find out the hard way. Things turned-out well-enough.

A while later, I once made-reference to a years-old news story, & another pitter contacted me to say he was directly involved in the incident. Our next connection was when John Greg set a hard deadline to kill himself. We discussed whether we could/should intervene. Working our way thru that bonded us as friends.

The other guy was in a band, and he shared their music with me, and they rapidly became my favorite band. I'm going to risk sharing this link to a cover-- our boy is singing. Gorgeous!

Time went by, we met once in person-- on a rather tumultuous day in his life!-- but that's his story to tell, or not.

I started buying cheap guitars on craigslist & self-teaching. I sent some recordings made solo in my kitchen & bedroom-- & he loved 'em. Shared them with his band & they asked me to collaborate, long distance. They were giving me a shot at joining my favorite band! Unfortunately, I made songs by recording wild noises-- and 'subtracting' the huge-majority of pure shite. I wasn't proficient-enough to be-given their songs and 'add' another layer. They were better off without me. Here's me-alone, when I had built a guitar from literal garbage (a biscuit-tin for a body, curtain rod for a bridge). The band said it looked-like something Lu Edmonds would play, so I tried to impersonate PIL:

Me & the other pitter kept goofing around, not bothering the legitimate genius producer in his band.

Just 2 smartass Atheists pickin' & singin' & goofin' about Jesus was kinda our thing...

That awful "What if God was one of us"? song seemed perfect for us. I tried to learn it... and went down a rabbit hole. I've recorded an album's-worth of versions of that fucker. All with street noise bleeding in from the window, using only the built-in Mac mic, and the mic on a $2 pair of earbuds. That rabbithole derailed the collaboration, because I kept sending versions of the same song to him... month after month.

I recommend headphones, for the full trippy quadraphonic effect.

There's more... but you get the idea.
As far as I am concerned, this is SLYMEPIT MUSIC, so I wanted y'all know to know it even-existed.

Fuck off! I post what I want just like I always have. It's not my problem or my fault if others have left. I never made them read any of my shite. So ... fuck off. You should just admit that the pit is not interesting to you anymore. Just be honest... fucking cunt. Thanks for the service up to now and have a good retirement... but it would have been nice of you to bow out gracefully instead of talking shit at the very end.... cunt.

I'm not sure who, but I think someone here once linked to or recommend BJ Campbell HWFO, once wrote on Medium now on Substack. Mostly about guns and gun stats.

Anyways I subscribed to him which only nets you access to a private Slack. I have been there for over a year now and it is much like this place used to be, prior to our Shiri's scissor moment, Trump's election. They do delve into a bunch of Culture War stuff, but they do have a real Economist, a bunch of other Substack and Podcast creators on there, John Robb, Alexandros Marinos, Cactus Chu, amoung others. So a lot of interesting things and ideas get tossed around.

If somone is looking for a place to land I think it would be a good fit. They do skew younger than us, which I think helpls with our 'old man shakes fist at sky' syndrom we have. I have yet to find someone to put on ignore there, but I have a high tolerance, as I never even ignored Steers, just passed over quickly.

I will miss you lot, but I am happy there are other places out there who still believe in open discussion so that we can continue.

You can't imagine how sad this makes me. Even though the 'pit is a relatively small (and very niche) site, it has become quite important to me for a variety of reasons. Sure, I may not post here as often as others and what little I actually contribute is 99% garbage but I still love the site.

And I love you guys/gals/pan-galactic weirdos.

Ah well, we had a good run. I hope your retirement goes smoothly and you have many, many enjoyable years of relaxation and comfort ahead of you. Next time I'm in the boozer, I'll raise one glass for you and one for my own sorrow at our parting.

Cheers one and all!

I have PMed some of you. I am sure I missed many... and this site only allows a few names on each private message. If you want my email (and WHO DOESN'T!) please PM me. At least we can have an email group where we can bitch at each other.

My wife's hair started falling out with vigor today. Her scalp is painful. Hair in the shower... the sink... falling down her back like fall leaves. Once it is all gone she will not have any hair again until at least next March... if she lives to see that.

I would suggest a Slack. They are free and easy to setup and use. Plus you can add all the custom emojis back in. :hankey:

I have a hunch that Lsuoma is incapable of recognizing... that you are *reacting to* his bile, in kind.

He & ftp keep framing the situation... as-if some unworthy jerks just unilaterally behaved-badly here, inflicting ourselves on poor innocent victims.

Lsuoma coulda de-escalated his defamatory attacks on my character (his evidence-less claims that I made-up/ or stole from someone-else/ the stories from my life/ which I told here.) He coulda gone-back to check if his 'conspiracy' accusations actually resolved in my/our favor. Instead-- he admitted that he "forgot" what the conspiracies-in-question were, but he couldn't be bothered to go-back & check.

And... I don't think Lsuoma's failure to admit... that he went too-far... is actually very important. It's all on the record, if anyone is curious & has the spoons.

I know for-sure I got some things wrong. Some things right. I know I have far-less RATFUCKING to apologize for... than the "Good Germans" who always agreed with The [party approved] Censors and The [party approved] Science, over the last few years.

Last time Lsuoma was gonna close-shop, I volunteered to quit... if that would keep the place open & more-appealing for those-who-remained.

This time I'll offer this: I'd be a much more concise & restrained poster... if those who disagree-with me... would actively engage when they disagree. (Ideally in a concise, pointed way. Gawd bless Steersman & ftp for replying... but they were long-winded & tried to get the last word without moving-the-conversation forward. Sometimes, I think they just wanted attention.)

Howling into the void *With No Echo* definitely contributed-to my unilateral, marathon posting-style. The lack of 'pushback' was worse than being opposed. So-- in that regard-- I 'just wanted attention' too, y'know?

I think Lsuoma is smart to make active-decisions... about what his retirement routine will-be. But I'd prefer if he didn't shut the doors with absolute finality. Left himself the option to unfreeze the place, if the future calls-for-it. If someone sets-off a fucking nuke... sometime in the next year... I'd prefer this place was open, to hear you cunts weigh-in. Howabout re-opening it a couple times a year... on the Summer & Winter solstice? To mark the time.

I think there was a chance the Pit could have evolved into a rare place where even highly politically polarized issues could have been discussed rationally and without acrimony as it migrated from a left-leaning site to a right-leaning (which was inevitable due to the partisan uptake of 'woke' identity politics). But the existence of those who still wanted to maintain some kind of left-wing enforcement, which became very troll-y with time, made this impossible. John says he was always rude, but early on he soft-pedalled anything politically right, and still frequently got hit with ad-hominems from the enforcers. Other conservative posters got it worse and didn't stick around long. As the site moved right, most of the partisans understandably lost interest and moved on, but not all.

If the midterms turn out to be the kind of Democratic washout many are anticipating, it seems likely the Dems will largely reverse course on the worst of identity politics they so quickly adopted because it was trendy among Millenials and GenX. Trans politics seems especially likely to be aggressively abandoned. It will be too bad the Pit will no longer be around as a forum to discuss this and celebrate this second victory over identitarianism.

Broadcast & social media blast-us with ways-of thinking-about & talking-about topics. We which absorb, consider, & repeat. That discourse is highly ad-hominem, so it was inevitable that we would accept-those as the correct-ways to approach topics... and try-out the same tactics here.

Perhaps a truly-skilled person could peel-away the personal-attack... and re-direct the conversation to more substantive points-of-conflict. But that's very hard to do when the person flinging the hate truly believes the root of the problem is You Are A Bad Person And Deserve Only Contempt.
as it migrated from a left-leaning site to a right-leaning (which was inevitable due to the partisan uptake of 'woke' identity politics). But the existence of those who still wanted to maintain some kind of left-wing enforcement, which became very troll-y with time
You're correct the left-wing version is the predominant cultural version. (Not just 'woke' but the broader Nice Normal Progressive agenda). But there are rightwing versions... most notably the nascent internet meme culture. Terms like "SJW" and "NPC" have a personal-attack component, when flung at someone one-on-one. Yet the urge to take those new terms out for a test-drive... was irresistible.

At best, we would-have recognized those inevitable aspects... and accepted them as necessary evils...preliminary volleys we'd have fire & endure... before we moved-on to the heart of each conflict. And not-everybody is good at arguing. Some are doomed to get-stuck in the "You disgust me" phase.

Since everyone else is commenting on John D - I thought I would put in my 2c worth...

If things had not worked out so well financially and career-wise with John, and if he was not so stoically capable in dealing with the various shitty vicissitudes (sp?) of life this would be the time when he would be needed to rely on his family. Which could be a good thing as it would be drawing them all together.

Things change and there is a ending to all things.

Perhaps Mrs JD may wish to consider what her legacy will be - sponsoring a park bench or a trees are popular choices or possibly a donation to the local dogs & cats home (or even another type of wildlife fund).

Child A & Child B should also be considering what part they wish to play in the ending experience and aftermath of 50% of their parental units.

But best of luck & condolences with whatever happens JD.

Ecclesiastes is my favorite book of the Bible. I have read it dozens of times... and read it slowly... one part at a time. Solomon... proving again just how smart those Jews are.
12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,
and also madness and folly.
What more can the king’s successor do
than what has already been done?
13 I saw that wisdom is better than folly,
just as light is better than darkness.
14 The wise have eyes in their heads,
while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
that the same fate overtakes them both.

15 Then I said to myself,

“The fate of the fool will overtake me also.
What then do I gain by being wise?”
I said to myself,
“This too is meaningless.”
16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;
the days have already come when both have been forgotten.
Like the fool, the wise too must die!

https://www.city-journal.org/nih-blocks ... s-database
...the National Institutes of Health now withholds access to an important database if it thinks a scientist’s research may wander into forbidden territory. The source at issue, the Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP), is an exceptional tool, combining genome scans of several million individuals with extensive data about health, education, occupation, and income. It is indispensable for research on how genes and environments combine to affect human traits. No other widely accessible American database comes close in terms of scientific utility.

My colleagues at other universities and I have run into problems involving applications to study the relationships among intelligence, education, and health outcomes. Sometimes, NIH denies access to some of the attributes that I have just mentioned, on the grounds that studying their genetic basis is “stigmatizing.” Sometimes, it demands updates about ongoing research, with the implied threat that it could withdraw usage if it doesn’t receive satisfactory answers. In some cases, NIH has retroactively withdrawn access for research it had previously approved.

Note that none of the studies I am referring to include inquiries into race or sex differences. Apparently, NIH is clamping down on a broad range of attempts to explore the relationship between genetics and intelligence.

What is NIH’s justification? Studies of intelligence do not pose any greater threat to the dignity of their participants than research based on non-genetic factors. With the customary safeguards in place, research activities such as genetically predicting an individual’s academic performance need be no more “stigmatizing” than predicting academic performance based on an individual’s family structure during childhood.

The cost of this censorship is profound. On a practical level, many of the...

Actually, I'm wondering if we need Hunny Bunny to see if Doggo is actually plagiarizing his stuff instead of composing it. I can't tell because I can't bring myself to read it - I'd rather shoot my face off. Not enough time in my life to engage with people like Dogster - out feeding deer and raising bees.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like a dump to be as memorable as it is devastating.
I sincerely recommend you take a walk in fresh air, feed those deer, and decide not to end on a puerile note.
If you decide your decision-making is a little 'off' at the moment, you aren't beholden to it. You've got room to course-correct, whatever form that takes.

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
You cunt, I'm not a queer
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that´s full
I've traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did, what I had to do
And saw it through with out exemption
I planned each chartered course
Each careful step along the highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way
There were times, I'm sure you knew
When there was fuck fuck fuck-all else to do
But through it all, when there was doubt
I shot it up or kicked it out
I faced the wall and the world
And did it my way

I've laughed and been a snide
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now, the tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think, I killed a cat
And may I say, not in a gay way
Oh no, oh no not me
I did it my way

For what is a prat, what has he got
When he wears hats and he cannot
Say the things he truly feels
But only the words, of one who kneels
The record shows, I fucked a bloke
And did it my way

So long, Herr Tit, and thanks for your work in running the Pit over the years. It was a great respite from the FTB fuckers. Such a pity that it was eventually choked to death by the remaining wankers.

Tootle-pip to all those of you no longer posting, who brought me many a chuckle!

To add: I was having a bit of nostalgia about Godfrey Elfwick, the best thing to ever come out of the 'Pit. While digging through the interwebs, I stumbled across this summary on RationalWiki of what the 'Pit has become in the 2020's:
In 2020, the Slymepit raged against vaccination and in support of the Taliban. In 2022, the Slymepit enthusiastically supports Vladimir Putin and his attack on Ukraine, heaping praise on the "denazification" goals of the attack, and mocking the suffering of the Ukrainian people. Commonly posted memes compare Ukrainian women and children, including infants, to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, mocking both for their fears of sexual assault while excusing or even glorifying the assailants, openly praising the equivalences between the two groups. It is almost as bad as before 2020, when posters to the Slymepit explicitly endorsed misogyny, slavery, Richard Dawkins, and genocide.
Dawkins? Fuck me, things have got even worse than I had imagined.

Thougt I'd have one last look after hearing the news. Jesus, this place has sunk even lower into the shite than even I imagined. I definitely made the right decision to leave the discussion when I did.
As far as I can see the only half decent cunt left here is lsuoma and he's made the right choice. So, lsuoma ta for your work back in the distant past when this was an interesting place with interesting posters, and now is the time to nuke it from orbit. What a shithole!

The Schism has mended! The pit-haters & Lsuoma & the 'one of the good ones' pitters... are all in agreement... & all equally-committed to honesty.

Huzzah!

For my final post, I plan on leaving on a good note. Or key, at least. C Major, it says.

Hello All,
I have lurked here pretty much since it began, never posted much since nearly all of my work - offshore marine cable laying, offshore survey, and making stuff to stick under/in railway locomotives never brought me into places where the politically correct now woke crowd had infected, so had nothing to contribute.
Only heard a bit from my friends in acacdemia coping with the crazy, who had to keep their heads down.
It was so interesting to find a site where almost anything went, in mostly good humoured fashion, and having to stand by what you posted (no edit) was a big drawer.

Thank you Lsuoma, for keeping the thing going. I have learned a lot, and was ready to understand why some of my freinds of over 40 years now won't speak to each other.

Regards, Peter

That's not the half of it. :(

Sorry to bear such bad news.

Thank you for your service Lsuoma, and happy retirement.

If anyone wants to go for some stupid gesture to honor Phil's memory on behalf of the Pit, don't know what that could be, but I'm in.

In any case, so long, and thanks for all the cunts. :cdc:

Mon Dieu!!! This saddens me greatly. Phil supported my son (at quite a bit of expense to him) during a difficult time in his life. Phil was a very nice person. This news sucks.
