Wow... top 10 worst days today.

My wife was pretty good Thursday night recovering from surgery. I had some meetings scheduled for this morning so I planned that I would cover these meetings and then spend the whole afternoon with my wife in the hospital.

7:30 my wife calls in a total panic... "Where are you... I need your help ... you need to be my advocate.... I need your at the hospital!" So, I cancel all my meetings and get to the hospital in 20 minutes.

When I get there I find that the nurses are in the process of changing out her IV. Her IV failed overnight so she has had little pain meds and her arm feels like shit. So I tell her what is going on... which I had little to do with... and that they are setting up a new IV sight. They did a sonogram to place a deep IV in her upper arm. Wow... the killer and best of IV sites. Brilliant work.

But... my wife is off her nut. She has uncontrollable skin irritation and itching. She groans and groans and rips at all the tape and sensors and shit. Her jaw is shaking and she is agitated. They give her Adavantin and that helps, but they do not give her more than one dose.... and I am like... do you just wait for her to loose her mind and then treat her? What is the plan here... and they are like... well... we will see how she does... and I am like she is not doing well and you can see it.

And so... I go to get a bite to eat and my wife pulls out her stomach tube and they call my cell. My wife is ripping off her stomach tube and wants to be released from the hospital so she can get "hospice". She wants no more treatment and wants to die.

So... I am back at the hospital and my wife is refusing any drugs and any treatment. And we try to explain that we are just trying to make her more comfortable. She says she wants to die... so I say... Just get through the next few days and get out of ICU and I will fucking shoot you myself. But she will still not accept any meds to reduce her anxiety and itching. And so... I left her in the doctor's care tonight. Maybe they will make some progress... I don't know.

Fucking bad day... really bad day.

What is it she really wants from you?
Not saying you even can, or have to, give it to her, but I'm thinking this might not be what it seems on surface.

You might have to pour on some drama here. Tell her you realized you can't carry on without her and you need her to listen to the nurses and take the medicine. You're obviously the one that provides the stability and money in the family, but people fight a lot harder and put up with a lot more hardship if they know they have something to offer that's indispensable. In an important respect she does too. If she didn't you wouldn't be in pain right now.

In addition to all-else, she might be legitimately irritated-by or allergic-to the tape. You can request paper tape.

My wife's family are religious. When ever somebody was in your situation, they would organise prayer chains. I don't know why, but I always found the idea of all of these strangers, stretched out over the map, putting the sick person and their family into their prayers comforting. I will pray for you both.

Well I was just about to have my dog put down cuz she wouldn't eat, then couldn't walk, couldn't breathe, and seemed about to have a heart attack. But no vets were available, and now the bitch is wobbly walking about, had a long piss from the porch out to the yard, and is voracious. She's got consumptive heart failure, and her hind legs are almost useless, so it won't be much longer. But not today I guess.

GF's sister put down her 13 year old Newfoundland today. All the siblings died at 7 or 8. This one lasted longer because they waited until after estrus to have her spayed. The vet asked if they wanted to bury her in the yard... the hole woulda been huge.

Today was fish market... and I'm in the middle of 4 other gigs. Some absurd stuff is happening at work, but I've been too perplexed to describe it all.

One example: fashion label wants 15 models to stand on low pedestals in an art gallery. Like the bases under a statue or store mannequin.

Rental places don't-have the exact size they want. Custom fabricators are quoting prices up-to $450 per box. The best deal was half-that... but that fabricator said client would have to sign the work-order immediately... or else the offer would expire/ because his woodshop was only idle this week/ next week he's busy with other Fashion Week clients.

The client reacted with 3 days of silence... the offer expired. But those 3 days also burnt $1200 of my billable time... researching dead-ends & waiting for a reply. Their cheapness is going to be expensive. I also could have built the boxes myself in that time... easily. Heck, I could have improvised pedestals from LACK side-tables at Ikea, at $15 ea. Criss-crossing the legs with packing-tape for additional support. Plus some tarp & paint to "gift wrap" the sides.

It's odd how they'll be on death's door then rally out of the blue. This spring I lost a cat that had been suffering kidney failure for some time. In the winter it got bad enough his hind legs went out entirely, to the point he couldn't stand up in the litter box. The same day we had set as a deadline to make a decision he was up and moving again. Made it for a few more months to spend his last day in the sun before passing in the night.

She needs to be put down. The congestive heart failure is causing terrible coughing fits, and her legs just aren't working. I'm wondering if she had a stroke.

I called a visiting euthanasia vet, but got no response. If a horse needs to be put down, i page my horse vet and she comes out 24/7. None of the local vets work on weekends any more, and none have emergency hours. I'm not driving her two hours to some strange place just to get put down. I'm of a mind that animals can tolerate pain a little better than us, but anxiety & fear much worse.

I'm also not gonna shoot her. So, unless she has a heart attack, she's gonna wheeze and piss all over herself until at least tomorrow. At least she's feasting on canned cat food until then.

Remember when every girl wanted to be a vet when she grew up? There's a severe shortage now, especially in rural areas, and small animal clinics are all being bought up by a few national chains that maximize the profit margin. I don't even know my regular vet, cuz my old regular vet sold her business to a chain, and now the waiting room looks like some LA spa.

These fuckin' things are sold in packs of a dozen, at Wal-mart & Amazon. Just-over $1, each.

Yeah, you can poke fish with a bow, crossbow or spear.

But... jesus... the #8-32 threading is the standard size for household furniture knobs, pulls, handles...

so another $12 buys a dozen of these...

Cheerio, you dry old cunt!

Sam Harris released a podcast episode... to tell you that you "misunderstood" what he said about Trump, and this tendency of yours is evolutionarily "maladaptive". Also, he quotes Friedrich Nietzsche.

And that's just the first 2 minutes.

Which is worth 2 minutes of your time. Sam Harris's implosion has been thoroughly noted. But the comic value of his deadpan declaration-- that he finds you to be irritating & worthy of nothing but reproach-- is brilliant self-satire.

and

if you actually wanna hear a real-live dissident intellectual response to Sam Harris, 'New Atheists', etc. -- I recommend the video below. Its just some dopey youtube guy-- a fanboy of Mencius Moldbug-- babbling-away to his livestream fans. But he really-does make some good points, once he gets rolling. (Then he gets a little late-nite groggy & starts calling Sam Harris "Sam Francis" by mistake. Sam Francis being a white nationalist author who died in 2005. heh.)

Harris is kind of an idiot. I mean obviously not like in the did poorly in school, will never read above the third grade level or understand basic algebra sense. But he's an idiot. I remember back in day he had this excruciating debate with a security specialist over whether we should profile Muslims in airports post 9/11 and he just could not understand that the dude was not speaking to and did not care about the issue of whether it was morally permissible to notice patterns about the world but was giving a rundown of his field and why profiling doesn't work for various reasons.

At the 6 minute mark, Sam Harris addresses those who note this contradiction. "It's all bullshit!" says Sam.
jet_lagg wrote: Harris is kind of an idiot. I mean obviously not like in the did poorly in school, will never read above the third grade level or understand basic algebra sense. But he's an idiot...
As I read this, I 'heard' it in Sam Harris's cadence, which juxtaposed humorously, against the section of Sam Harris's podcast, which was playing in the background: At 9 minutes Sam defends his claim that "Donald Trump is worse than Osama Bin Laden" by describing all bin Laden's positive character traits... and offsetting that with sole caveat that bin Laden took a wrong turn in Albuquerque & subscribed-to an oops set of beliefs which led him down an oopsie path. Sam ends by saying "I don't know much about bin Laden." :twatson:

11 minutes:

"Whereever you are on Earth, you could probably walk a thousand miles in any direction, and not meet a less admirable human being than Trump. I mean it."
....
"If he weren't funny-- and I'll admit he can be funny-- then he might be the least admirable person on Earth. Now, some of this is just my opinion, of course, but..."

--

18 minutes into the podcast... Sam still-hasn't said the _name_ of the podcast (Triggernometry)... in-which he demonstrated that his foot fits in his mouth. I think that belies his claim that the his comments made perfect-sense, "in context".

Spoiler: for 19 minutes Sam teases that he "misspoke" one single word on Triggernometry, which changes everything.
Finally, he gets-around-to telling us which word was wrong:

"I believe everything I say... except for one word."

The media censoring Hunter Biden's Laptop was not "warranted".

The correct word, Sam now says, is that: the media censoring Hunter Biden's Laptop was "justifiable".

Take that!

Literally half this response-podcast is over, before Sam stops issuing pre-emptive caveats, and plays the clip from Triggernometry.
(And when he plays it... he surreptitiously deletes the word "fuck" from the interviewer's response to Sam.)

The Triggernometry guys were widely-praised for letting Sam speak uninterrupted, but at 23 min Sam complains (still without naming them) that they twice interrupted-him before he could provide full context.

23:30 Twitter & NY Times were reasonable in saying the Hunter Biden story was Russian Disinformation.

(yeah, but but the FBI _knew_ it was real, Sam)

24:00 "I have No Opinion about whether the 50 intelligence officials who signed that letter-- that it was probably Russian Disinformation-- were lying."

24:50 Sam makes a big point of saying that-- At The Time, right before the 2020 election-- it was reasonable "not to care what was on Hunter Biden's laptop". Then he ends by sabotaging his entire point, "...and the truth is I still don't care... there is absolutely nothing that could be on that laptop that is relevant to me"

26min "...Even the podcast hosts appear to have misunderstood me..."

27min (he starts talking fast & agitated "...a right wing echo chamber..."

35min Despite saying that he doesn't think Trump is "Orange Hitler", Sam then repeats his comparison of Trump to an astroid about to collide with Earth... then he says "unless you're a Nazi, you-too wish that one of the plots against Hitler would have succeeded."
THAT'S SOME GRADE-A SAM HARRIS LATE-NIGHT SOPHOMORE DORM BONGRIP THINKIN', SAM. Should the 1932 election have been rigged, to deny Nazi candidates their victories? If you say Democracy must prevail... is Sam right?... does that make you a Nazi?!

36min Sam again muddies the "unique" threat of Trump by invoking Alex Jones as just-as-bad. And now he adds L. Ron Hubbard to the list. (But not Osama bin Laden!)

36:50min Sam sez Trump can't be allowed back in office in 2024, or we'll see "more grifting from Trump and his family." Take that, Hunter Trump! And Donald J. Pelosi Jr.!

38min -- Sam calls January 6 a "coup". But then he says it's "not really a coup at all" because it was so "perfectly Trump" because it was completely ineffective, "just wandering around in their costumes, smearing shit on the walls and taking selfies, and stealing mementos from Nancy Pelosi's office. This is Trump, actually, the real essence..."

So Trump is a HARMLESS asteroid, eh?

39min Sam calls the laptop-- which the FBI had buried for 18 months-- an "October Surprise".

40min Sam says Biden receiving kickbacks from Russia or China WOULD BE worst than Trump. But but but... sez Sam... it would not be worse than "denying the results of an election". Uhhhh.... Hillary. Stacey Abrams. And Sam himself, back in that Hitler example.

Oh wait... I interpreted that last bit wrong. 10 seconds later Sam sez it "Could Not Matter" if Biden took bribes from Russia and China-- because we have 40 years of evidence that Biden is a good upstanding politician.

Nor, says Sam, would Joe Biden "cheating on his taxes" matter, nor the "me too" rape allegation against him. Because "Trump had him beat".

And then Sam ends by saying he's grateful to be free to "correct the record".

Fucking wow... just wow. Can Sam Harris not even hear himself? He is less coherent that a screaming Baptist minister. Haha. Haha. I will NOT be taking this LSD that I have. Not Gonna Do IT! If LSD can make you this stupid I want no part of it. Besides... with my wife having stage IV cancer it is probably a really bad time to take acid.

She is in standard care now. Her vitals are good. She is pooping and pissing. Recovery is on track. But... she is a total cunt... haha. She verbally abuses me. She tells me to do something for her and I do it "wrong" and she basically calls me stupid and uncaring. GOOD TIMES!

The cockpit has always been locked on every plane I've been on since 2001. How'd even the cabin crew know about this? On a short flight, they won't even bring food or water to the cockpit.

I bet they were fighting over the Canadian doctors.

It can't. You'd have to do acid many many more times. And, even then, Sam Harris has other shit going on inside himself. From the start-- his urge to go-on months-long silent retreats... and have endless, shapeless conversations with demented gurus... is an attempt to fill some quirky void.

But, yeah, now is not the ideal time.

(but... if you went out to nature & did Acid now... you'd probably just cry laugh cry laugh cry laugh & feel deeply moved by wind & the smell of mud.)

You left out the fun part about how his followers understand him and this is a non-issue. These are just right wing wackos who are going after him. His 'real' listeners understand him.

A few months ago, I had an evening of work-- arranging bartenders & hospitality for Steve Jones, Paul Cook & Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, with director Danny Boyle, and the cast of the Disney+/hulu/FX tv series "Pistol", based on Jones' autobiography.

That night, Jones recorded an episode of his Jonesy's Jukebox radio show/podcast, with the kids in the cast.

GF & I have been hired again, another event, same location, some of the same VIPs. So I've been watching the "Pistol" show, to be in-the-know.

It's... Not Bad.

It's oddly cozy & nostalgic, given the subject-matter. It's shot-to-resemble worn 16mm film. And interspersed with snippets of archival slice-of-life footage, concert footage, and old movies. The first episode would probably transport Lsuoma back to a previous existence.

Sometimes it's light on plot... just following the kids around, like The Clash's "Rude Boy" or Who's "Quadrophenia". But when it does offer 'moments'... (often involving an attractive actress who I expect will turn-out to be playing Chrissy Hynde)... those 'moments' are shamelessly sappy & on-the-nose. As-is the shocking/excessive glimpse of a young boy forced to give his step-father a handjob.

If "Pistol" had-been Danny Boyle's first movie after film-school, shot on zero budget, the sappy bits would be charming. But DISNEY backing the thing casts a less-charitable shadow on things. Namely-- the shadow of some soulless Disney exec trying to be young, relevant & edgy... but lacking the humanity & artistry... to detect the difference between 'earnest' and 'cheezy'. (There's a drag queen bar scene which seems like a paid corporate message/ inserted to ward-off criticism for the straight/white/euro/cis/male subject matter.) Yeah, I know there were faggots & drag queens in the mix back then, but these look like cruise ship entertainment.

The actor kids are likeable, and don't seem anachronistic. The Steve Jones kid carries the film well, and the Johnny Rotten kid steals the show. (I guess it's a good sign, that I keep thinking of it as 'a film'.) Malcolm McClaren gets flattering treatment. The kid actors were not entitled cunts the night I worked with them. They were humble & eager to fulfill their promotional obligations like pros.

Did I fail to emphasize... that the ugly, suicidal side of punk... is lost in soft-focus, here? And... that's less of a loss than I expected.
Because this thing has a consistent mood, a coherent point-of-view. Fuck it, why not make it a Coming of Age romance? It might be more atrocious-- if Disney DID make a G.G. Allin nightmare.

Johnny Rotten complained a bit about not-being-consulted on the show. But he doesn't seem genuinely upset. Seems like that's just his assigned-role, to create publicity buzz.

Last I checked it was a time honored pit tradition to lay Nazi pipe.
But NO swinging of the pale pipe...

Found a vet who could come out yesterday. My dog of course had a bit of a rebound that afternoon, but that was good because there was a window where she was happy and relatively lively. She fell asleep, then went quietly. Much better than the gelding I had to put down a few weeks ago, who’d probably twisted his gut and was miserable.

The vet was great, euthanasia is all she does. She did start by giving me a little spiel on how important it was for me to be there, blah dignity blah her eyes will stay open blah there might be noises and twitches blah. Which I get is important for most folks but it was about to make me bawl my eyes out when I just needed to do my job for my dog. She stopped talking that way after, while we were waiting for the anesthesia to kick in, I recounted all the many different, often unpleasant ways all the many horses I’ve put down had hit the ground. And she heartily agreed with me that a little bit of prolonged physical pain for an animal is worth sparing them fear & anxiety. She left me with a cartoon book about the Rainbow Bridge, and I’ll be receiving a certificate for the tree that’ll be planted in her honor. Then she asked me for a hug, which was a crappy hug from me cuz I was carrying.

Call was $375, not much more than for a horse, although my vet surely gives me a discount, as the last time I had the back-up vet out to stitch up a horse it was close to $600. Shelly the Knacker loves me, so I get a huge discount for horse carcass removal. My dog could have been cremated for another $325, with her ashes returned in a special memorial wooden urn (pick-up or $50 shipped). Then there are the ceramic paw prints, plaques, etc. We buried her in the yard. The vet had a stretcher for ‘dignity.’ Again, that’s very thoughtful, but I said ‘I’ve been carrying her for the past three months, I can carry her now. Besides, that’s not her.’ She traveled regally in the dump trailer behind the quad.

So, all in all, it worked out good. But I'd spent almost every minute of the past 10 years with my bitch, so it’s very odd this morning.

NB: None of this can compare to what John is dealing with right now, but I appreciate all the kind words and sentiments, which is what the Pit always does. The baboons said we were horrible people, but despite being rude, crude & lewd, and major league pricks most of the time, we are not.

That, my good sir, is the same actress who plays "Nadja of Antipaxos" in the "What we do in the shadows" TV show.

Sadly, I can't find a clip of my favourite Nadja quote - "This is piss, a steaming bucket of horse piss!" (used to express extreme displeasure)

Dogs are fantastic Matt. Losing them is a terrible hurt. So sorry.

Cancer update. My wife ate the first solid food she has had in eight days. Chicken pot pie.

I walked her around the hallway twice. She gave herself a shower.

I suspect they will release her on Thursday but they will not tell us anything now. It is great that all she has is an IV right now.

We both discussed how we wake in the morning each day… and at first everything is fine… and it takes about 30 seconds to remember the cancer. We have trouble getting it off our minds.

The very nice woman in the next bed chats with my wife. She has had so much chemotherapy and radiation that she has openings in her back and vagina. She has so much neuropathy that she can’t walk.

We do not know how this will play out. My wife says she doesn’t want to end up like the woman in the next bed.

I spoke too soon, about the Disney Sex Pistols tv show.

The director of the Trainspotting 'dead baby' scene, and the band that sang 'Bodies'... made episode 3 a bloody abortion.

There will be a lot of decisions to make in the months and (let's be optimistic) years to come balancing quality against longevity. Everyone knows they're going to die, but it's one of those far off academic facts like the universe inevitably succumbing to entropy. It would be a lot different if you were there watching the stars start to go out.

The Ireland trip sounds like a great idea. Say hello to Michael Nugent for us :)

The trans chicken question has been settled according to Steersman's exacting standards.

Between feed and materials for the coop I figure this egg cost me around twenty bucks. But you can't put a price on quality.

It's hard work being sick. And caring for someone sick can be a full-time second job. that can easily become all-encompassing, but don't let it. Your wife has a really bad case of cancer. Statement of fact. There's a lot both you and she need to do to address it. But that is a given, and the things you need to do are clear, so there's no point in overthinking -- they are chores you just gotta do. It still leaves plenty of time & energy for other things as well, nice things like trips and such. Those are what you two can wake up each morning thinking about.

We do not know how this will play out. My wife says she doesn’t want to end up like the woman in the next bed.
The docs will subtly or overtly push her to do all the chemo, etc. Cuz that fits their protocol -- they usually fail to consider the 'totality of circumstances.' Last year, my vet was out for a horse in really bad shape, and she was running through the things we might try. I asked, 'in what scenario do these symptoms come out good?' She paused, then slumped a little and said, 'there is none.' To do chemo just because it's next on the list, makes no sense.

Your wife has the right to decide what she wants. My uncle did everything else, but drew the line at chemo. I've warned everyone that, if I'm ever trapped in a blizzard, I'm not wiggling my feet or doing math in my head to stay awake. I hate being cold, so I'm going to sleep.

When I was a kid, my mom would say, "Your grandparents aren't going to live forever, be sure to make the most of your time when them, while you can."
Or "you might-not always have a brother," she'd say.

Spending time with family was a good idea, but... mom's way of wording-it cast a grim shadow over otherwise-enjoyable moments... for decades.

And I've seen enough dire cancer prognoses... turn into recovery & 20-years-and-counting of decent life...

That I just-can't fully believe The Worst, anymore. I try the idea on, wear it around for a while, enough that The Worst is no-longer Beyond Comprehension. And then I go-back to assuming the person in question will outperform what we were-told to expect. Sometimes they don't. Many times they do.

John is right to face The Worst, look it right in the eye. Prepare for it. But things might go better than that, too.
