Someone named Judith from the original thread is still there hammering away at Carrier, and several people are stepping up to his defense and having a go at her. They don't like how she's parsing and nitpicking Carrier's apology and aren't convinced she's not a troll. Enter Brony who is more on her side than theirs. Judith says one commenter, Kainan, may have defamed her by saying she tried to blackmail Carrier and she asks for a retraction. On the other hand, the Amazon archetype (women with a big, athletic, toned body but still highly feminine with large breasts and hips), is a big divider. Personally, I find this type highly attractive. Back when Serena Williams was in her late teens and early twenties, her body was smaller and tighter than it is now and I think she fit very much in this archetype. With the glow of youth she had at the time, I thought she was a knockout and was surprised this opinion was uncommon.

And this seems borne out by experience: the other top female players are either highly inconsistent (e.g. Petra Kvitova, who will beat Williams when on her 'A' game but that 'A' game is elusive) or just limited talent-wise. Back in 2004 we had Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams, a much better Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport, and Justine Henin as some of the main competition for Serena, and I think it's clear that's much superior competition than what exists now. It's something of a mystery how there could be this big secular decline, but I guess just bad luck could explain it. The men's tour, on the other hand, indisputably has hugely more talent now than 2004.

First time post, first time reader of just a few days ago, having searched out Carrier in regards to one of his books and finding this post and all the drama. So, I don’t have a history here, but I have to say that I’m not sure all the angst around Carrier’s post suggests a worthwhile venue to visit.

All the extreme caution does in this case is to limit the discourse. IMO, rules should be set, and anything else goes, especially in a venue containing the words “free thought”! If an unseen line is crossed, state as such and let it continue, without punishment. I think that Greece shows the weakness of a single currency across multiple nations. Greece has had it tough now for seven years and are in even more hot water. If they were on the Drachma they would have had a massive devaluation. This would have caused some extreme hardship but it would have made exports and tourism extremely attractive and allowed to Greece to slowly build itself back up and by now they could have been in a reasonable state. That is if they got rid of some of their structural problems (rich people not paying taxes and a bloated public service).

I'd like to recommend a book around these parts.

As you all know, fantasy as a genre tends to suck balls. The writers are often unoriginal hacks ripping off ideas from 40+ years ago and not doing it particularly well. The characters tend to be shallow and the stories tend towards wish-fulfillment for neerrrrrrrdddsss.

But I've been enjoying Joe Abercrombie's First Law books. Got through The Blade Itself and Before They Are Hanged. I hear the last book sucks, but we'll see.

Maybe I'm just happy to find an asshole as bitter as myself in Glokta.

Yesterweek, my swole brother and I had just finished our prayers to Brodin in the Iron Temple. Upon our exit, my swole brother gazed to the heavens and said, "Behold! Of course actual literate people are defending this is a realistic development which gives the character added depth: that he's a man of his times and yet still is willing to fight for the rights of people he doesn't like.

So, I don’t have a history here, but I have to say that I’m not sure all the angst around Carrier’s post suggests a worthwhile venue to visit.
I did see the ‘offensive’ post, and while it’s not really my cup of tea (I’m not interested in what any man says about his own fluids), it seems that when a group is discussing sexuality and explicit porn, etc., there are times when personal aspects or proclivities can creep in and shouldn’t automatically be cause for running a guy out on the rails.

Mr. or Ms. W is also unfamiliar with Carrier's general in-person party proclivities and how judgmental he and his friends are of said proclivities when held by others...

Can you imagine being an old-fashioned slightly dusty classicist and ending up on Carrier's blog... that warm splash in the face... :mrgreen:

The EU was ridiculous to allow Greece to join the Euro after it became clear that they had cooked the books in order to qualify for membership. However it serves the larger federalist drive by Germany and France to create the unified Europe they desire.
The real issue is Greek government spending and the electorates intransigence when presented with what was a reasonable referendum by anyone's standard. Greece has only recently stopped subsidising their milk price (my old gig) from by far the most generous in Europe down to just very bloody generous. Meanwhile the dairy industry here is closing at an alarming rate. An almost universal retirement age of 55 in one of the healthier nations of Europe has created a pension timebomb that cannot be defused by the Greek government. Tax collection knocking around the 60% mark doesn't help much either.
But if German, French and British people have to suffer the death of their agriculture and get to retire at 70-odd so that we can continue to keep Greece in the manner to which she is accustomed then we seem to be in the position of having to pay alimony because our arranged marriage hasn't worked out.

Judith says one commenter, Kainan, may have defamed her by saying she tried to blackmail Carrier and she asks for a retraction. Carrier feels emboldened enough to tell her she's "just wrong" and making feminists look bad.

All of this is happening with no apparent sense of irony of course. I mean it's not like Carrier and friends have helped to create and nurture this monster, this call-out culture that thrives on parsing every Tweet and every utterance to find any semblance of malice. I guess they don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot. How strange.
