AFAIK, storm troopers in the later (ie, during the first trilogy) empire are hired, just like our earthly military. I used to have a SW RPG master book where there were some pamphlets to join the Legions. The clone stuff is yet another retcon bullshit by Lucas. I guess it's easier to ignore people being shot and killed when they are clones, as opposed to hopeful kids wishing to make a living by working for the dominating power in the galaxy.

I mentioned that yesterday when a group of us got together - apparently this new movie is set in the future after the original trilogy, and the troopers are now just like a regular army. They got rid of the clones and allow anyone to join up. At least that is what I heard. I had thought this was another prequel.

Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammil are in it so it couldn't have been a prequel unless a shitload of makeup and weight loss pills are involved.

My experience of SJW's IRL is that they are formed in the humanities departments of most major British colleges and Universities. From there they go into P.R. H.R. departments where they stagnate into mediocre middle management or probation, social services and less frequently law. Or they stay in academia which is the safest environment for them by far as their dogma has infested a large portion of the student population and they are unchallengeable. Many schoolteachers I know are on the SJW spectrum. However I have seen outliers in almost every profession I have been involved with The exceptions would be any job where the potential for unexpurgated bullshit would actually impede or endanger the workers. So the military, agriculture, construction etc seem to be immune from this kind of crap.

I've always wondered about this. Was this started by R.A. Salvatore was did someone do it before him?

Gygax was a big fan of Poul Anderson and JRR Tolkien. We talk about Tolkien's obvious influence on DnD, but Anderson also had a big influence. The specific is believed to be that Anderson wrote "Three Hearts and Three Lions" back in 1961 and the Dwarf Hugi had a Scottish accent. And Gygax just went with it, even though it's a Norse/Germanic myth.

I think Tolkien is less of a credible influence to that, even if (at times) he skirts that way, as well, since he was creating a mythology for the English and had a tendency to parcel out various UK influences/sub-cultures among his nations/peoples and it's been argued that he borrowed some of the Dwavish ways from the Scottish and Cornish miners. Ultimately, however, it's believed that the Dwarves (in Tolkien's universe) were primarily based on Jewish stereotypes (metalworking, craftsmen, gold hoarders).

As for movies and other things. Not sure. But it's been around. Warhammer, from what I understand, also uses the trope. Raymond Fiest really went 'all Scots' with his Dwarves including using Scottish place names in his Magician/Apprentice series, but he was doing this in the 1980's.

But they're all there after Gygax. And Salvatore was just a follower of the trend.

It was called the Thorn Tree and it had boards for various regions and interests. I mostly hung out on the Gay & Lesbian, and West Africa fora, but occasionally explored others. My first impression was that these people were primarily British, university students, and posers. They would accuse me of being in Africa to do the CIA's bidding, or to covertly push Coca-Cola and Marlboros, etc...
I especially earned their wrath once when some guy was curious about styling his hair in those tight rows of braids, and I told him that though that style is popular with african-americans, in my region of Africa it's a women's hair style and the men would think you were weird. Apparently they were all about cultural appropriation back then.

Early to mid nineties for me, or to put it another way, as soon as I started hanging out with high-school/college students. I had never met a single SJW before that (even mys sister was still quite moderate at the time). I don't think I've met many after the HS/college period either, save for my sister's friends, who all turn out to be art majors for some reason (she works in movies) and maybe one or two fans I befriended. Thankfully, they know well enough not to engage me on those subjects they deem worthy of social interest.

Around 2002 when I moved to San Francisco. It really isn't as bad as you would think(even now) that are plenty of people who are left leaning but you know, sane.

Since the internet has gotten so big I have noticed it starting to creep in around Alabama but most of the really out there ones then to leave (and move to San Francisco).

Of course they're both devoted anti-capitalists who give freely of their time and expertise, and eschew all the perks of affluent US society.

For people who profess to have no interest in money, they sure spend a lot of time discussing the finances of others.
