I just love it when mansplainers say "reasonable debate." You can just feel the rape apologies oozing forth.

ps. in case it needs saying, while most are women, a male can also be a DRIC (i.e., delayed retractor of implicit consent)

pps. don't be a DRIC

ppps. I'm sorry for "Jeebus, you're thick"; I spent too much time on A+ where I wanted to say something like that too often

Kink-shamed.

Was it this exchange?
I just shake my head in amazement sometimes. For all intents and purposes there is no difference between "*fantasies* about non-consensual sex" and "rape porn".

I really do not have an issue with Greta and her rape fantasies at all. One issue I do have however is that I believe is that she runs with a croud who I suspect would have a problem if I, the wrong kind of person to them, had such fantasies. I believe they would be all over me because "OMG RAEP" but they would not say a word to Greta.

Am I wrong in this?

It isn’t about who gets credit for popularizing the “big booty.” It’s about who is erased and minimized in the process. “Vogue” writer Patricia Garcia seems to think that Rihanna’s arrival at the CFDA Awards with her backside exposed was made possible because of J.Lo. She does not account for the hundreds of thousands of black women in the history of the world who were stripped of their agency, placed “fully on display” against their wills, and sold to enslavers who used their free labor to feed the textile industries that have fueled the fashion market.
If fashion took into account the entire history of a trait, it wouldn't be fashion anymore. Or do we also need to discuss the historical enslavement of Germanic and Slavic women every time Marilyn Monroe gets mentioned as an iconic (bottle) blonde?

Not all twerks are equal: Teaching my kids how to appreciate pop culture
My daughters love Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, but how much should I educate them about the politics of pop?
MARY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS

“If I like a song, I don’t care who sings it,” my teenage daughter says. And it’s true, she doesn’t seem to care – she and her 10-year-old sister have broad musical palates. They love hip-hop and show tunes, Tupac and Disney. They unapologetically enjoy Selena Gomez and share their mother’s abiding affection for Nirvana. But lately I’ve been wondering how to talk to my kids about music, and how much who sings it does matter. Specifically: what they need to understand about Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and the politics of the female posterior.

When Swift released her new single and video for “Shake It Off” last week, critics were quick to debate whether the image of a twerking Taylor, resplendent in gold chains and surrounded by dark-skinned dancers, was cultural appropriation or self-mockery. Similar conversations have spun around Iggy Azalea, about the patois she affects when she performs and her reported casual description of B.o.B., Drake and T.I. as “ma n*ggas.” They’ve ignited likewise over Katy Perry — who recently lamented, “Can’t you appreciate a culture?” — and Sky Ferreira and Miley Cyrus.

...

My children are only now starting to grasp that that message is a big part of what all this rump shaking is about, and figuring out for themselves that “appreciating a culture,” as Katy Perry would say, means understanding context. That means that when Minaj is singing about her “big fat ass bitches,” a) I’d prefer my kids not sing along but also b) that they understand she is celebrating the kind of women you don’t see in Victoria’s Secret ads. That she is commenting on race and culture and narrow standards of beauty and a lot of that has to do with butt. I want them to not be like the clueless white kids I saw earlier this summer at Kara Walker’s “A Subtlety,” taking goofy selfies gawking at the sphinx’s breasts and buttocks. I want them, when they watch Miley or Iggy and the dancers they put behind them, to consider the implications of, as Tressie McMillan Cottom puts it, “black female bodies as a white amusement park.” I want them to know that music belongs to everybody but that Swift’s story in “Shake It Off” is not Jay’s in “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” — and to respect that. I want them to question it when white guys who write for the New York Times insinuate that twerking equals “trashy.”

Jeebus, you're thick.

You presented it as evidence that her claims should be believed. But it's terrible evidence, as several folks have pointed out. Now, if you had given us examples of times when she had said or done something that would be difficult to explain without assuming that she is a truthful person, then you would have been doing something useful. But just coming on and saying that she's your friend and that you think that she's truthful, etc, without giving us the data that led you to that conclusion is absolutely worthless.

As to what may or may not be nuts, I don't know. But I do sometimes judge folks by the company they keep. And, to be blunt, right now, you ain't doing your friend any favors.
Let me pose the question this way to Beleth:

Do you believe "being a good person" precludes someone drinking too much, by their own volition, and then doing something they might not do when sober? Does "being a good person" mean that person is incapable of confabulating an incident when they were drunk or re-conning a drunken experience to present themselves, to themselves, as a "good person". Do you think a self image of being a "good person" might actually make them disavow responsibility for something they did while intoxicated? That is, assigning the blame externally, rather than to themselves, as that might chip away at their "good person" image? Do you think a good person may either have no idea what happened when drunk, or a good idea of what happened, yet present it a certain way, especially well past the point of actual consequences, to project a "good person" image to others?

Do you think this sort of spinning is made infinitely easier by the slippery rhetorical position that, in the case of two drunk people having sex, one male and one female, the female has no responsibility, while the male retains all his responsibility, and so, all things being equal, the male is decided to be a rapist and the female to be the victim of rape? In such a scenario, is there any case where the two can escape, or even reverse, those role determined a priori?

Do you believe that people who do things they normally wouldn't do while under the influence of alcohol, or generally having a problem with alcohol, makes someone inherently a bad person? Is your view based in whole on part on the gender of the person?

I mean, it's easy to throw out something careless like "she's a good person, she wouldn't do that" it's harder to drill down to what you actually mean by that.

JackSkeptic wrote:I see Beleth as simply giving an opinion based on his knowledge of someone. We all make value judgements all the time, even courts do, so why such animosity?

The only thing I know is giving a claim of rape to the one person you know who will use it to further his political ideology with no care for the facts, evidence or the harm done is in my opinion someone who will come across as having little interest in justice. Maybe she thought that was the only option she had. But it does mean many people will no longer believe her and if anything it has damaged her credibility which is a shame as the one thing guaranteed to be harmed is the truth.

If I wanted the truth out there the last person I would choose is someone like Myers via someone like Poppy unless I had a political agenda and wanted to cause as much harm as possible without care to the consequences or harm to innocent parties. These people are known to ignore facts and evidence, their whole belief system relies on it. They also really do not give a stuff who they harm as everyone in disagreement with them is an enemy to be brought down.

So Beleth there is a big disconnect between what you are saying and what we have seen happen. If that damages her claims or the perception of her character then I am afraid that is her fault and no one else's. It's a shame but there it is.
It could be that she was relating the story to Poppy, who then took the ball, proclaimed that it was rape, got her to sign on to it. We know Poppy is certifiable, and she might gravitate to the loudest mouth, one whose reputation was already in the shitter. It wouldn't be the first time someone has reinterpreted events years after the fact. As for Alison/Remy - who knows. She was on some kind of ghost busting show, and even as the token skeptic that makes me wary of her judgement. The letter to Shermer afterwards is just a bit of icing on the cake. I guess we'll have to wait and see if any evidence comes to light, or if it will remain "she said, he said".

This is a list of lexemes rather than of words. Roughly, a lexeme can be
thought of as an independent vocabulary item or dictionary entry. It's
different from a word since a lexeme can give rise to more than one
distinctly inflected word. Thus English has a single lexeme speak which
gives rise to inflected forms like speaks, spoke, and spoken. It's
especially important to count lexemes rather than words when talking about
Eskimo languages. That's because they are inflectionally so complicated
that each single noun lexeme may have about 280 distinct inflected forms,
while each verb lexeme may have over 1000! Obviously, that would put the
number of snow words through the roof very quickly.

The list is organized according to lexeme meanings. Perhaps somewhat
arbitrarily I have counted fifteen of them, placing within each of them
noun and/or verb lexemes having the same basic sense. And perhaps even
more arbitrarily, I've grouped these fifteen meanings into four larger
sets. But the most arbitrary decision of all is left to the discretion of
the reader-the decision of how to count the lexemes themselves. Here are
some of the problems you face:
The list and problems goes on from there. A bit interesting if you like that sort of thing.

What is this, anatomical appropriation? The author doesn't have steatopygia, and judging by the pictures on her website, not even a standard issue big ass:

Also, from what I remember about Stephen Jay Gould's essay on the topic, the Hottentot Venus was much more in control of her situation than this author would have you believe. "Sold" and "caged" she certainly was not.

The key, for me, was how the number of Inuit words for "snow" was taken by the Whorfians (who will be lined up against the same wall as the Bayesians when I take power) as a reason to believe that Inuits would be better at discriminating between different types of snow. That turned out to be false ... and yet there are plenty of Whorfians in linguistic departments.

ps. linguistics is a popular major among the SJWs ... coinky-dink?

It's a Christopher Titus line. I'm pretty sure it's off his 'Fifth Annual End of the World Tour' album.

I'm torn. It had a great three-season run, but I kind of doubt it had much gas left in the tank anyway. I hate it when sitcoms linger long after their inspiration has been used up.

No, neutrophils are a type of leukocyte (white blood cells) that are stained histologically by neutral dyes (as opposed to basophils or eosinophils. They typically account for 50-70% of the total WBC count.

Christopher Hitchens used to ask all the time with no good answers "name one ethical statement made, or one ethical action performed, by a believer that could not have been uttered or done by a nonbeliever?"

My modified question would be:

Name one substantial contribution to science or atheism by a (prominent???) SJW that is currently widely recognized in this generation in the science/atheism community, much less possibly to future generations?

Would it be PZ's collection of blog posts put in a book or perhaps Greta Christina's collection of atheist erotica, I don't know. Thousands of pages of random repetitive blog drivel comments with words like “fuckwit” and “oh for fuckety fuck fuck sake” don’t count either.
