Hugs (and not the pounce kind). What an awful thing to have happen...and not unusual, but that doesn't help.JacquesCuze wrote:Hey, it's my oldest daughter's birthday. I don't think I've seen her for more than five minutes in probably 4 years now, and certainly haven't seen her at all in 18 months.
In lieu of virtual pouncehugs, consider virtual (or even real) donations to parental alienation support groups.
Before going to work, I used to wake her up, get her dressed, make her breakfast, and then stroller her 4 days a week to and from daycare while my wife was getting her Ph.D.
The short of it is that judges will enforce child support at pain of jail time, but won't lift a finger to enforce parenting orders or recognize or deal with the damage an alienating parent can do.
Should go without saying that the loss of her in my life has been devastating. And of course her younger sister too.
Happy Birthday R, may you have a wonderful year.

I was primary care giver for the first 7 years of my daughter's life, and changed more diapers than the mother. Ended up with getting cut out of daughter's life for several years. After many battles we reconnected; those early years formed an important bond and ultimately we made and maintain an excellent relationship, years of maternal character assassination notwithstanding.
Peace and good luck to you and yours.

One the bottom are all the young adult sexual lumpen-proles who for one reason or another are confused, ambiguous or frustrated in their sexuality. Normally they can keep it in check and just bitch about it, but when you throw alcohol into the mix, things happen in which they are no way responsible forâ„¢.
Above them driving it are the dried up sexual scolds like P.Z. "I have fond memories of my boner" Myers and Ophelia "My pussy abraded the paint off my 40s-vintage 'neck massager'" Benson, who couldn't get laid by a homeless crack-head in Charlie Sheen's cabana with a gallon Zip-Loc full of coke.

It's a fact that the accusations would have been much more effective without the strong implications of "raep!!1!". Even Shermer's own account is rather on the creepy side (hint, when someone is plastered enough to nearly induce a "bathroom incident", you're not supposed to wait till they vaguely look "sober" to your own intoxicated ass and then bang them anyway).beleth wrote: 2) realize that the arguably-suboptimal way she handled it doesn't meant that it didn't happen.
Instead, the implicit R-word riles people up (because no matter how creepy it is, rape it's not) and Shermer ends up seen as a victim, with good reason.
YMMV, IMHO, IANA, STFU, YMCA, etc.

But one might offer an obligatory quibble relative to this from your last link:
But many – of some credibility - aren’t really convinced that selection is going to carry the freight on its own:Once you understand the concept of selection, and how it applies to evolution, you realize that what was thought to be vanishingly unlikely actually becomes virtually inevitable.
Behe goes on to at least broach the idea of another factor or process – self-organization – that might play a significant role before, of course, eventually going with “Jehovah didditâ€:At the symposium [of mathematicians & evolutionary biologists] one side was unhappy, and the other side was uncomprehending. A mathematician who claimed that there was insufficient time for the number of mutations apparently needed to make an eye was told by the biologists that his figures must be wrong. The mathematicians, though were not persuaded that the fault was theirs. As one said:[Darwin’s Black Box, Michael Behe, pg 29]There is a considerable gap in the neo-Darwinian theory of evolution, and we believe this gap to be of such a nature that it cannot be bridged with the current conception of biology. [Schutzenberger, M.P. (1967) “Algorithms and the Neo-Darwinian Theory of Evolution†in “Mathematical Challenges to the Neo-Darwinian Interpretation of Evolution†….]
Behe wrote:Stuart Kauffman of the Santa Fe Institute is a leading proponent of “complexity theoryâ€. Simply put, it proposes that many features of living systems are the result of self-organization – the tendency of complex systems to arrange themselves in patterns – and not natural selection:[pg 29]Kauffman wrote:Darwin and evolution stand astride us, whatever the mutterings of creation scientists [pointing to “serious problemsâ€?]. But is the view right? Better, is it adequate? I believe it is not. It is not that Darwin is wrong, but that he got hold of only part of the truth.

Apparently victims of rape move in mysterious ways. Just read the Ofie thread about it. As a case in point, they used the recent case of Ray Rice and the Stockholm Syndrome his wife seemingly suffers from.Phil_Giordana_FCD wrote:There is no way right now to know who is telling the truth. Coincidentally I was thinking the same thing when one of Julian Assange's alleged victims wrote an almost glorifying review of her supposed rapist the day after. Do victims of rape, who feel they've been raped, usually do that too? :confusion-shrug:

Obviously, she could tear him a rhetorical new one if only she had the time and wasn't so tired. But dammit, she'll just have to stick him in moderation; such is the cross she has to bear.
Also, Greta claimed I kink-shamed her on twitter yesterday, after I pointed out that she wrote a book which celebrates rape.
Kink-shamed.

This comment (not by me) on the Pharyngulag:

Too bad that Tony! The Queer Moron had already quoted the offensive comment in its entirety, thus rendering Peezus's effort at suppression futile.

Poor Tony still has much to learn about silencing techniques. Maybe Peezus should put up a Silencing 101 guide for the benefit of his Flock.

Re: Nerds. Nerds EVERYWHERE...
It really marked the end of FtB when reasonable debate couldn't at least be dangled as a chew toy.
'Twas a time when you could make your points politely, incite a horde dogging and have PZ step in to call time on you. Everybody won.
Now PZ has scared away anybody offering occasional polite disagreement and those that creep thru are immediately banned before anyone gets to have fun. Hence the sad soulless place that it's become.

Jeebus, you're thick.Beleth wrote:Who do I hope to sway? Anyone who bases their conclusions on evidence. Or is testimony regarding Alison's straightforwardness to be automatically taken as proof of Alison's shiftiness? You know how nuts that sounds, right?
You presented it as evidence that her claims should be believed. But it's terrible evidence, as several folks have pointed out. Now, if you had given us examples of times when she had said or done something that would be difficult to explain without assuming that she is a truthful person, then you would have been doing something useful. But just coming on and saying that she's your friend and that you think that she's truthful, etc, without giving us the data that led you to that conclusion is absolutely worthless.
As to what may or may not be nuts, I don't know. But I do sometimes judge folks by the company they keep. And, to be blunt, right now, you ain't doing your friend any favors.

On the positive side, you can now enjoy the sensation of reading a dystopian novel in daily installments. It's like 1984 becoming live on your screen. I find it morbidly fascinating and entertaining.Brive1987 wrote:It really marked the end of FtB when reasonable debate couldn't at least be dangled as a chew toy.

Re: Nerds. Nerds EVERYWHERE...
I see Beleth as simply giving an opinion based on his knowledge of someone. We all make value judgements all the time, even courts do, so why such animosity?
The only thing I know is giving a claim of rape to the one person you know who will use it to further his political ideology with no care for the facts, evidence or the harm done is in my opinion someone who will come across as having little interest in justice. Maybe she thought that was the only option she had. But it does mean many people will no longer believe her and if anything it has damaged her credibility which is a shame as the one thing guaranteed to be harmed is the truth.
If I wanted the truth out there the last person I would choose is someone like Myers via someone like Poppy unless I had a political agenda and wanted to cause as much harm as possible without care to the consequences or harm to innocent parties. These people are known to ignore facts and evidence, their whole belief system relies on it. They also really do not give a stuff who they harm as everyone in disagreement with them is an enemy to be brought down.
So Beleth there is a big disconnect between what you are saying and what we have seen happen. If that damages her claims or the perception of her character then I am afraid that is her fault and no one else's. It's a shame but there it is.

Hang around and have some fun. Don't take anything too seriously (if there are two interpretations of a comment, and one of them is tongue in cheek/sarcasm/irony/piss take, then it's probably the right interpretation). There are opportunities for serious discussion (in some sub thread somewhere - ask John Greg for directions to it). Etc etc.Beleth wrote:Couple more things:

PS stick to your guns if necessary, and be prepared to both dish it out and take it.KiwiInOz wrote:Hang around and have some fun. Don't engage Steers, or welch. And close your eyes or blindfold yourself when scrolling past a Mykeru post!

In fact, it's probably best to have everyone except "another lurker" on ignore.
