From my feed, Ophie just put up a post about consent. It was from someone's comment about an article from August of 2010, about kids being basically experimented on. Ophie had a whole three lines. So far...two comments, one of them pointing out that it was old, and wondering what happened to the story (and related court case). Without the drama train, yeah, nothing.

Sort of..... I'm more a Researcher as in Re-Search. I work in an Archive for a Broadcaster and the Library is huge. The Visual goes as far back as 1956 when TV started here in Australia. Audio goes back geting close to 100 years now. We have all sorts wanting to use the Archive for their own productions. The Sales people negotiate the fees and set up the job, I manage client expectations and then find the Archive they really want. The only digitising I do is when previewing the material in a low-quality digital format...when it comes to the final order the technicians do the final conversion. BUT! I do take it upon myself to fully understand the processes of conversion formats and processes as I do work with Film, Vinyl and a variety of formats in mode at the various eras.

The reality is I'm a gloryfied tape monkey....it's not that bad, I shouldn't depricate the job...it is interesting, I get to work on all sorts of Film/TV projects and of course get to watch lots of TV...a childhood dream come true.

And at the risk of doxxing myself even more...I'm internationally famed for locating vision of the exact moment the television signal between NASA and Parkes Radio Telescope switched over during the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing. Harassment policy? That comment made me smile then I realised they will have one, even if not formalised. If someone disagrees with them they will be kicked, strawmanned or both. Of course it won't be worded that way but is what will happen. The exception is if they get someone they can all abuse and patronise. They will have their jollies then kick them. It's what bullies do.

I do have a gut feeling this conference, although it has a name with less self awareness the 'Brave Hero', may be their way to try and seem reasonable. So I will judge it once it has happened. I also happen to support online conferences as there are too many that achieve nothing except wasting air miles and running up bar tabs. So I will be interested in how it works out.

And being a smoker means my peripherals will fall off.... the heating system takes a while to warm the place up.

@ H2O: I fell into the job...I have no tertiary education even though the job calls for it (i'm not sure why). I have this weird uncanny ability to learn systems pretty quick (PC based, card files stupid library systems) and amazing lateral thinking...and a like for putting clues together and following trails. I'm limited to researching within our own disjointed whacky systems but when I retire I will probably try freelancing. Helps if you find everything interesting in a childlike inquisitive way.

I do find cataloguing and shot-listing incredibly boring...have managed to avoid doing that but it's usually they way into the industry.

In the month or two I was on the backchannel Justin seemed to always be shamelessly and obsequiously grovelling for PZ myers approval and validation. PZ in return was a dick to him, but in a way that he was left with the clear impression that griffith was wrong, that his grovelling was the right thing to do, its just he hadnt done it well enough.

It was chatter like this on the backchannel that first clued me in to what a toxic and detached environment FTB was. Arguments should be discussed on merits, and when a significant portion of the chatter is about 'publicly' (on a mailing list) humping the top dogs leg, or the top dog chastising the underlings for not doing it well enough.....thats a pretty big red flag!

I think this is why Griffiths was so keen to bad mouth the slyme pit and pretty much anyone else. Its what he though would FINALLY get PZ to pat him on the head.

I have come to the conclusion that being in the military fucks up people by celebrating every aspect of toxic masculinity as a good thing. I am currently 6 months in to the process of reprogramming my son after a ten year enlistment period.

Most people would say "deprogramming" to remove some line of thinking. Reprogramming suggests another set of indoctrination from one set of rules to another. I have come to the conclusion that being in the military fucks up people by celebrating every aspect of toxic masculinity as a good thing. I am currently 6 months in to the process of reprogramming my son after a ten year enlistment period.

What a truly delightful person. I don't know about others but I'd certainly hazard a guess that it may not have been the military that fucked up their son, think that may have happened closer to home, pretty much in it.

Laden then kept a low profile for some time but is emerging recently again. Could it be that Justin Griffith's move had to do with the recent welcoming again of Greg Laden? And then Greg is also on the line-up for FTBCon and all FTB Bloggers are intended to also make an appearance, too. That would intensify the issue again.

I will bet right now that within Six Months, Laden is back, and they'll all be praising him for trying to slap some sense into Justin.

I have known many ex- military as well as current members, both Canadian and American and not once have I had one make a threat to me much less a hostile violent one like Tethys'.
She has no right or ability to "reprogram" anybody, in fact appears to need some real help herself, and not from some postmodern feminist "therapist".

No - I'm in Columbus. The prosecutor has been the same for ages, and they have a pretty standard policy of filing them on murders and any robberies with guns. There are a few odd other ones depending on who is doing the cases but those are by far the bulk.
