And history is blithely rewritten. And the wheel of time spins. And lies become truth.

Because its kinda funny.

From the FTB facebook conference page:
"Wowza - that's 300 likes! You like us. You REALLY like us! Thank you. You know what this means, right? Only 100 more likes until the next status update celebrating 400 likes! Goals, people. Gotta have goals."
https://www.facebook.com/FtBConscience

Just think how pathetic that is for a second. A blogging network with ~30 members can only get 300 people to click a 'like' button. That is your average FTB blogger can only get about 10 people to click the like button. Oh wow, the next wave of A+theism is truly seismic in magnitude!

Im also a little fuzzy as to how an 'online conference' consisting of google hangout sessions is any different from merely a bunch of google hangout sessions.

Also check out the number of comments many of the posts by some of the 'prominent' FTBers, such as Greta Christina, Steffy Zvan, Ophelia B, etc., typically attract. The sound of crickets is deafening in there.

The low apparent interest in many of the blogs is why i think they go hunting for people to start drama with. When Ophelia went after Shermer for instance, the video she linked to had been posted for months already and had already been seen tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of times due to being featured on one of the most watched youtube channels around (Young Turks).
But I guess when it;s a slow-ass news day and you got nothing else to rage about, let's go dig up some shit from the past and go get some blog hits!

Yeah, Rorschach is pure nasty. He's an MD, whose tongue had to be awarded an independent medical degree so it could act as PZ Meyers's proctologist.

But, for all his aggression, also surprisingly insecure.

He has a blog, and I remember one meltdown where he went onto Meyers's blog and said (paraphrasing from memory) "Okay, so no one is following my link from here to my blog, so I am just going to shut the whole thing down, you all suck."

Then there was the time during the FfTB startup, when Meyers hinted he would be inviting interesting and relevant bloggers to join his site. The desperation and, later, when he realized he wasn't going to get a golden ticket, smacked-puppy sadness emanating from Rorschach was shocking.

I'd suggest that "the guy isn't well" is a bravura act of projection on his part.

Left to their own devices, Social JUstice Warriors tend to suffer from "horizontal hostility' as a result of their self-policing and jockeying for position on the oppression totem pole. The fires of anger and outrage have to be constantly stoked not only to keep a sense of momentum needed as "activists" but because, without an external threat, the other they would just eat each other.

Everything I needed to know about assholes like that I learned from crabs. Not from having crabs, presumably like Becky, but going crabbing with my dad. It's not just that crabs have no sense of cooperation, but when they are left to themselves in a bucket for any length of time, they tend to become less appetizing for eating. Because they tear each other apart. Not just pulling each other's limbs off, but a big crab will put it's big claw right through a smaller crabs carapace because, well, they all seem to make a pact to make each other suffer and die.

FTB: It's a bucket.

Most of them definitely thrive and survive on made-up drama. They have nothing of genuine interest to say anymore, if they ever had. Their remaining supporters are creatures such as Oolon and Rorschach; their most 'successful'* posts are troll bait.

*If success is measured in number of comments.

Coolest sounding job so far. Do you mean that you go through old types of media and convert them to digital? What era(s)? Ancient books, Cinefilm, vinyl, cassettes, postcards, family photos, TV shows?

Don't forget the time he ordered Richard Dawkins and several other well known names to go to his blog, crawl upon their bellies and denounce something or other. Failure to do so would result in...something. Strangely none of them rushed to comply.

From my feed, Ophie just put up a post about consent. It was from someone's comment about an article from August of 2010, about kids being basically experimented on. Ophie had a whole three lines. So far...two comments, one of them pointing out that it was old, and wondering what happened to the story (and related court case). Without the drama train, yeah, nothing.

You have to wonder about that - Rorschach was insecure, disgusted with reality, and had major problems with his views of women and his mother - maybe sexual disfunction? His rather pessimistic view of reality (maybe a bit of an understatement)...why?

Coolest sounding job so far. Do you mean that you go through old types of media and convert them to digital? What era(s)? Ancient books, Cinefilm, vinyl, cassettes, postcards, family photos, TV shows?
Sort of..... I'm more a Researcher as in Re-Search. I work in an Archive for a Broadcaster and the Library is huge. The Visual goes as far back as 1956 when TV started here in Australia. Audio goes back geting close to 100 years now. We have all sorts wanting to use the Archive for their own productions. The Sales people negotiate the fees and set up the job, I manage client expectations and then find the Archive they really want. The only digitising I do is when previewing the material in a low-quality digital format...when it comes to the final order the technicians do the final conversion. BUT! I do take it upon myself to fully understand the processes of conversion formats and processes as I do work with Film, Vinyl and a variety of formats in mode at the various eras.

The reality is I'm a gloryfied tape monkey....it's not that bad, I shouldn't depricate the job...it is interesting, I get to work on all sorts of Film/TV projects and of course get to watch lots of TV...a childhood dream come true.

And at the risk of doxxing myself even more...I'm internationally famed for locating vision of the exact moment the television signal between NASA and Parkes Radio Telescope switched over during the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing. Apparently this was an amazing "find" amongst the Apollo 11 junkies. The consequense of this was fielding calls from Dr Who fans for weeks....and of course the assumption I'm an expert in the Apollo history, rocket science and part of the Lunar Landing conspiracy fraud.

I'd really like someone to explain this to me as well. I'm guessing it's different because they'll have to buy their own piss, won't be staying in free hotels and won't be getting free food. Though I suggest they get donations to actually do all those things irl just to make it more realistic. Wonder what the harassment policy is.

Because they tear each other apart. From the same thread comes this amazing coctail of ableism and hypocrisy, brought to you by Rorschach, surerly one of the vilest commenters on FTB:

[img]http://i.imgur.com/ed3dlTN.jpgmg]

Rorshach takes insecurity to an art form.

Harassment policy? That comment made me smile then I realised they will have one, even if not formalised. If someone disagrees with them they will be kicked, strawmanned or both. Of course it won't be worded that way but is what will happen. The exception is if they get someone they can all abuse and patronise. They will have their jollies then kick them. It's what bullies do.

I do have a gut feeling this conference, although it has a name with less self awareness the 'Brave Hero', may be their way to try and seem reasonable. So I will judge it once it has happened. I also happen to support online conferences as there are too many that achieve nothing except wasting air miles and running up bar tabs. So I will be interested in how it works out.

Too right maaaaate...

And being a smoker means my peripherals will fall off.... the heating system takes a while to warm the place up.

@ H2O: I fell into the job...I have no tertiary education even though the job calls for it (i'm not sure why). I have this weird uncanny ability to learn systems pretty quick (PC based, card files stupid library systems) and amazing lateral thinking...and a like for putting clues together and following trails. I'm limited to researching within our own disjointed whacky systems but when I retire I will probably try freelancing. Helps if you find everything interesting in a childlike inquisitive way.

I do find cataloguing and shot-listing incredibly boring...have managed to avoid doing that but it's usually they way into the industry.

Yes.

I live in a drafty log house and during the winter I can't type without typos to save my life. The numbness is so bad that I just don't care if I make the occasional error. It's a trial just to get the words out! FTB'ers got *extremely* pissy with me over this, because I should have 'checked my privilege', and realized that numb fingers is not an excuse for raping their eyes with typos.

Let's have some fun with comparisons.

The Thinking Atheist is essentially run by a single guy, Seth Andrews. Sure, he didn't build his following overnight, but let's just say that I'll be surprised if they get half as many page likes...

It was chatter like this on the backchannel that first clued me in to what a toxic and detached environment FTB was. Arguments should be discussed on merits, and when a significant portion of the chatter is about 'publicly' (on a mailing list) humping the top dogs leg, or the top dog chastising the underlings for not doing it well enough.....thats a pretty big red flag!

I think this is why Griffiths was so keen to bad mouth the slyme pit and pretty much anyone else. Its what he though would FINALLY get PZ to pat him on the head.

Kinda sad really.
Yeah, but it seems Justin is realising that now, and I for one won't blame him. I think he's joining the EBW crowd of people realising they have been conned. Good for him, I say!
I suspect that Justin may have been under the impression that he was joining the atheist mainstream/bigtime and perhaps was unsure of his position. To be fair, it is understandable that as a noob he would be hesitant to question the veracity of such skeptic luminaries as the great PZ Myers. Did we all come to the skeptic movement as fully formed skeptics? I know I had to have my fingers burned a few times before I learnt to be skeptical of the big doggies. He's learning.

I have come to the conclusion that being in the military fucks up people by celebrating every aspect of toxic masculinity as a good thing. I am currently 6 months in to the process of reprogramming my son after a ten year enlistment period.

Sydney.... a nice 11oC this morning. Get to work and someone forgot to turn the heating system on. Walk to dunny,I do a wee and wash my hands in cold water (because the tap is miles away from the hot water system). Check the pit, decide to respond to job list, go out for ciggie to think about how much info to offer, write reply, type too fast cause I'm at work and I'm sure I'm being audited for inappropriate internet use, hands cold, too fast, press submit, typos and oversharing

Greg Laden was once a member of the FC(n), the Fainting Couch before it was broadened to Atheism Plus. He played the internet tough guy, and threatened Justin Griffith and was subsequently banned from FtB when they also kicked Thunderf00t (it would have looked sleazy otherwise).

Laden then kept a low profile for some time but is emerging recently again. Could it be that Justin Griffith's move had to do with the recent welcoming again of Greg Laden? And then Greg is also on the line-up for FTBCon and all FTB Bloggers are intended to also make an appearance, too. That would intensify the issue again.

Six months in to the process of "reprogramming" her son? WTF? I was going to say poor kid, but poor adult. Was that a freudian slip, though? Most people would say "deprogramming" to remove some line of thinking. Reprogramming suggests another set of indoctrination from one set of rules to another. If you think you are returning someone to normal, you don't reprogram them, you get rid of indoctrination, not indoctrinate them into another cult. Is it just me that sees this as wrong? Do other's use that term that way as a return to normalcy?

I will bet right now that within Six Months, Laden is back, and they'll all be praising him for trying to slap some sense into Justin.

What a truly delightful person. I don't know about others but I'd certainly hazard a guess that it may not have been the military that fucked up their son, think that may have happened closer to home, pretty much in it.

Badger3K: Tethys is apparently admitting that her "toxic male theory" is just propaganda to be inserted into a vessel rather than ideas that stand on their own merit and that her son doesn't have the critical thinking skills to work out his own problems.

That's right, I forgot that modifier. Which was funny, because it showed that neither of those two nit-wits knew the slightest fucking thing about that incident.

Well as I rode to work this morning, the freezing fog going past Gosford wasn't exactly warm, wind chill made it icy ... though Sydney is a lot nicer today ... maybe 17-18degrees ...

But it does depend where you are, going inland to say Orange and you can expect sub-zero and snow ... surprised me when I came to Aus too ... "beaches and babes" they said ... turns out Sydney has more rainfall than London, and there are places in Aus where it actually gets freezing and snows.

Griffith goes out of his way to embrace the slyme while whining that I’ve used gendered slurs in the past. Good riddance.
I have come to the conclusion that being in the military fucks up people by celebrating every aspect of toxic masculinity as a good thing. I am currently 6 months in to the process of reprogramming my son after a ten year enlistment period.
I quit reading Justin when he decided that he was going to be the #bravehero who brokered peace between the horde and the slymepit. What a dipshit.

I have known many ex- military as well as current members, both Canadian and American and not once have I had one make a threat to me much less a hostile violent one like Tethys'.
She has no right or ability to "reprogram" anybody, in fact appears to need some real help herself, and not from some postmodern feminist "therapist".
"Toxic masculinity"? Is that anything like when Feminists themselves tell men concerned with their own rights to man up/suck it up/shut the fuck up? Or when they preach that men, even if they're not the ones doing any of it, are responsible for stopping rape/sexual assault/violence against women? Or when they tell men to set their own feelings aside and accept the 300lbs [136Kg] beast/burnt out party girl with 3 kids, because not doing so is fat or slut shaming?

Nah! Couldn't be. The self-disposability promoted by the military is nothing like the brand of chivalry that Feminists nag men to adhere to...

No, Justin has been planning this for some time - he just wanted to wait for the correct psychological moment.

Yeah, cuz that's totally what they did to me. As a woman. In the military. They just poured on the "toxic masculinity".

I hope her son runs far, far away from that fabulous example of feminist ;)
