As I mentioned, Richard Dawkins has an informative post about the UCL debate yesterday at RDF. Very good. I tried to add to the information Richard provided by linking to the information I had provided on Friday, but a moderator removed the link to my post almost instantly.
Why?
I took a look at the Terms & Conditions, and I can’t find anything that forbids links to blog posts. I’m not surprised not to find such a thing, because that would be an incredibly stupid policy for a website to have. Blog posts can be informative, so it would be ludicrous to make a general policy against links to blogs.
So then why?
I have no idea. The Friday post is relevant because it documents that the organizers were on the record as having agreed to Krauss’s insistence that there be no gender segregation. It documents that this was public information on Friday.
Why on earth remove that?
I did another comment explaining the (obvious) relevance and asking for the link to be left, but that whole comment was deleted.
What is wrong with them? If they have an ironclad rule against posting blog links, why isn’t it visible somewhere? And if they do, why do they, when it would be such a stupid rule?
Then I wrote the post that quoted Chris Moos’s new letter to UCL, and commented at RDF to say I had new information and posted that link – and it was instantly removed.
What is wrong with them?

Also, she's claiming that there's nothing in the T&Cs she linked to that should prevent her from posting a link to her blog. Given that FTB is a commercial enterprise, I think this might offer a clue:
No spam. That includes commercial advertising, anything posted multiple times on one or more threads, and the habitual posting of material that has simply been lifted from other sites in order to make a point.
Suck it up.

There's lottsa good information at slymepit.com, maybe Ophie would like Richard to allow us to leave links at RD.net. Of course, she would allow such a link on her blog...
A few months ago, I left some snarky but pertinent posts on RD.net concerning E.gate. They were up for several days, then disappeared. The post before me and two posts after were by Ophie. I know from experience that she likes to email RD.net and complain about what is posted there, demanding that it be removed. I have a suspicion that she had a hand in this too. Fortunately, the thread was dead by the time anything was done about it.

In some moments, I wanted to help FfTB to get there. They'd be on moderation in no time. But I'm too good hearted to pull this off. When I post there I also oscillate between trying to be reasonable and ridiculing them. It's difficult when you originally came into the community for good discussions but you have a fondness and past of causing mayhem. This is one of the reason I can relate to trolls who become that way after being objectified and fucked sideways by the FTBullies.Patrick wrote:If she managed to get on /b/'s radar, she'd think the Slymepit were some of her best friends ever in comparison.Southern wrote:It's just me, or there is someone else here cheering for Becky to go against 4chan or Anonymous next?

Elyse said something so incredibly stupid and vapid that it absolutely deserves mocking and ridicule. Harsh mocking and ridicule at that. She asserts that she has the final say on what anyone else in the world may or may not say if those words are directed towards her or any of her friends.
I have no doubt that she believes she has this power. She really does seem that incredibly brain-dead. But, that does not excuse her from the resulting criticism.
She tells everyone else to shut the fuck up and then she wonders why people are being mean to her.
She does does these things to herself and then turns around and calls that "victim blaming."
That kind of stupidity is contagious. That's why it must be called out and put down immediately.
Fuck her and fuck every single notion she has about "free speech." She's clearly demonstrated that she is not qualified to discuss the matter.
For everyone in the world must alter their speech patters in order not to offend the delicate sensibilities of little miss middle-class privileged white girl.
Fucking children, the lot of them.

While it's disgraceful that she was charged 5 years for the enrollment as well (especially in a country like the US, where education is sorely needed), it does seem the case was about the drugs she sold to an undercover police - twice. It's therefore very dishonest to paint the case in just the terms Kassiane did, that she was sentenced to jail *just* for the enrollment (which, again, is pretty fucked up). However that is unfortunately the kind of thing we've come to expect from Atheism Plus. Some "third wave of atheism" that turned out to be.

JB, you'd have to ask her, but I strongly suspect, in the context of the conversation she was having with Watson/Marcotte about Reddit's attitude to free speech, she was being sarcastic -- as in, "Reddit is extremely pro-free-speech but complains about being criticized."

Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
Boy, you guys sure post a lot! To add to the prior discussion of Anita Sarkeesian's newest video, the thing I'm most irritated about is just how content-free it is.
There's a quite popular website called tvtropes.org which is a wiki listing tricks of the trade for writers. It has entries both for the Damsel in Distress:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... InDistress
and the Distressed Dude:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... ressedDude
Both pages not only give tons of information about video game references, but provide far more depth than Sarkeesian does. For example, it notes that although many think that the "Distressed Dude" is a product of twentieth-century feminism, it is in fact much older than that. And it gives, again, lots of references.
How come Sarkeesian got $150,000 to produce some videos when one can find out far more information in a few minutes on a free, popular, web site?

I have remained entirely silent on the matter until now(except to notice that another poster sounded similar, possible sockpuppet). I find Eucli to be a rather pathetic sort, and creepy as all hell. I have no idea whether S/H/IT is a female minor or a male troll or a genderqueer miner, or whatever the fuck, but S/H/IT clearly has a need for attention. I certainly can't take anything S/H/IT offers at face value, and I don't generally interact with people like that. I've known too many tweekers as it is.
Couldn't care less about the ban, although generally speaking I'm against them except as a last resort for dedicated trolls. If there is a possible legal liability and the owner of the board doesn't like it or care to deal with it, so be it. Not my call, and I'm not going to waste space defending a spaz that creates his/her own trouble and rolls in it like a dog in shit.
My opinion is subject to change. Maybe I've witnessed the Andy Kaufman of forum trolls and just didn't get the act.
Re: stop confusing me with the facts
She was charged because she lived in one municipality and enrolled the kid in another using someone else's address. Education is controlled and paid for etc at the municipal level. Following links in the news site it appears the kid is now living with the grandparent now and attending school in the district he/she should have all along. Ironically enough the mother was arrested for selling crack in front of a school in that district, so I wonder if that didn't sway the mother's opinion as to where she wanted her kid to go to school.Pitchguest wrote: I don't get it. This is not the way Dawkins and Ophelia were presenting it. They were claiming it was divided into men/women/couples (some commenter at Ophelia's, I believe, asked, reasonably, how you could tell a mixed-gender pair was actually a 'couple'). There's a small but important difference if you have a 'mixed-gender' section for those who prefer it. More whingeing from Ophelia - now it's a vendetta or spite:
The thing is, I don't think Ophelia is indigent, for all her puling about buying $2 bags of cookies. FWIW, she smells of old money/trust fund privilege and entitlement to me. It is, of course, much easier to get a sense of this after interacting with someone and observing in person over time, but you can get a whiff of it online. I've no interest in confirming this particular case, and I've no intention of attending A/S conferences (nor do I have the opportunity, because, you know, work). And I don't think she deserves abuse or harassment for it, or for anything else, but I also don't think that she's really receiving much genuine abuse or harassment. I think she trawls the 'Pyt and elsewhere for things about which to be offended. I'd donate money to the pope-emeritus to buy boiled sweets at Woolworth's, before I'd send any money to her.
Ophelia repeatedly displays a deeply entrenched sense of entitlement. She spends all day - even during the work week - tweeting and copypasting and being terminally offended on the internetz. Her only apparent sources of income are occasional speaking engagements, writing columns, and co-authorship on a few books that are certainly not bestsellers. She lives in an expensive US city, and not in a damp cardboard box with a filthy sleeping bag for shelter. If she is truly indigent, then she is no more or no less deserving of social services than is any other American in similar circumstances.Ophelia Benson

But a university, holding a public debate, splitting seating by gender is absolutely abhorrent. As per Dawkins, I think it was a big mistake of Krauss to return.
What next? Cinemas forced to have segregated seating? Theatres? Sports stadiums? Busses ... oh wait, busses, yeah that's where we came in ... welcome back Rosa Parks ... hell, why stop splitting at male/female - let's go for race and religion too

Why does Opheliar Benson use the word "did" so much? I've noticed it a lot over the past few days, I wonder if it's some new little grammatical trick she's learned:
"I did another comment..."
...she wrote today. "Did"??? I would always use "wrote", or maybe "made". And I wouldn't mind reading "created", "typed" or many other words.
"Did" is completely jarring. Has she read some ancient style/grammar guide recently, and decided that adherence to an ancient set of grammar rules is preferable to easy reading?
Dusty old fustbag.

But mods will consider links to personal blog sites spam.
So Nanny could post a link to a CFI article she wrote about the tap dancing frog that has been harassing her, but she could not post a link to her personal blog article she wrote about the tap dancing frog that has been harassing her.
In fact, she could comment "I have written more about this on my blog" with no links, and that would have been fine too. Interested parties could easily find the info.
But no, Nanny Benson simply must throw her tantrum. Jackass.

Amusingly enough, over 30 years ago I stayed overnight in a friends room at York University and the next morning she warned me that the washrooms were co-ed.tina wrote: Also, mens showers. We should be allowed in mens showers anytime we want. I...er.....oh *coat*
Sure enough while I was using a wash basin in the morning, two girls clad in bath robes strolled in together, completely ignored me and got into separate showers.
As an aside:
The girl I overnighted with was a child hood friend and we had never once had sex, and certainly not that night. If we had been in Lebanon though, there would have been some pretty drastic and terminal social repercussions. Seeing as I was known to her family, at a minimum it would have probably been settled with us being forced to marry.

Re: stop confusing me with the facts
Oh. In the article, it said she sold the drugs in front of her home. That explains it then. Adding to the irony, if her mother didn't want her son to enroll in the school because she sold drugs outside of it, now he's going to have it even worse. Ah, self-fulfilling prophecy.JAB wrote:She was charged because she lived in one municipality and enrolled the kid in another using someone else's address. Nowhere in the article does it say the woman was homeless- is Dover Street a trailer park? A homeless shelter?
While it's disgraceful that she was charged 5 years for the enrollment as well (especially in a country like the US, where education is sorely needed), it does seem the case was about the drugs she sold to an undercover police - twice. It's therefore very dishonest to paint the case in just the terms Kassiane did, that she was sentenced to jail *just* for the enrollment (which, again, is pretty fucked up). However that is unfortunately the kind of thing we've come to expect from Atheism Plus. Some "third wave of atheism" that turned out to be.
