It’s the helicopter-parent theory of game design that’s the real threat to good games, not better, tougher, more heroic and fun-to-play female PCs.
Another social justice warrior called Erik. Oh dear. Anyway, the sad thing is that some of the comments provide a better and more balanced account on sexism in videogames than either Anita or Erik Kain. (Blasphemy to be called something as badass as 'Kain' and not live up to the name.) For instance Sarkeesian shoots out stereotypes like a machinegun but doesn't provide viable solutions herself how to resolve this, which this commenter pointed out:
The threatened bit comes from this point: Those who have watched her videos in the past, and noticed where she’s been incorrect in her reasoning, such as her support of segregated trams in Japan for women, have usually tried to correct her on those points. Often, they’re never responded to, however civil the point was, unless a quip could be made in response, or there was enough for an agreement to be made. And this is on the videos which allowed comments.
She only responds to critique that agrees with her, or what she feels like will work for her. If you’re making a series meant to start debate, like this one, that is the wrong kind of person to have at the helm. Much less someone whose work has been shown to be full of bad logic, and who offers no solutions to what they’re talking about.
Similarly they pointed out her flawed reasoning and sloppyresearch, like that video she made about Bayonetta which she later removed:
The lack of an alternative is also quite frustrating, as to some people Bayonetta might seem like the pinnacle of an empowered female protagonist; willfully overpowered and very sexy, but answers to no man (or anyone, really), has no romantic inclination toward anyone, and basically spends more time toying with men than being in the service of them. However, this particular character bothered her in the past, as apparently the only positive trait she has is that she’s a “single mother
(Speaking of, she did make a video game related video in this vein, on Bayonetta no less, before it was deleted from her channel. See here for a reupload:
And Zia from Bastion:
I simply don’t trust her to present this without something skewed to the way she sees it, and having that color people’s perceptions of these topics. Ignoring Ganon’s statement that Zelda had managed to hide from him for so many years being one hint of that, and her overuse of story-thin arcade games made in the 80′s and 90′s as supporting examples being another. And, lest we forget, she’s referred to Zia from Bastion as an example of this trope, despite Zia making it clear the opposite was true later in the story.
Again, I can't for the life of me figure out why people made Anita Sarkeesian a spokesperson of sexism within video games. She's clearly incapable of a balanced approach, not to mention showing herself to be incompentent on several occasions.
Here's a perspective from a game developer (who's a woman) on Sarkeesian:
Oh, and since we're on the subject, while inexplicably much of Anita's focus was on Nintendo games, Mario and Zelda in particular, and then mentioned some more examples (removing the context, of course), they were hardly the only games with female characters. In fact, from the SNES era, one of my favourite games is Kiki KaiKai, or as it is more commonly known: Pocky & Rocky. A cute game (in the chibi format) featuring Rocky, a tanuki (or raccoon), and Pocky, a miko. That's right. A shrine maiden. And is it good? You bet your arse. Plus it features one of the best soundtrack in a videogame. But did she bring that up? No. Hmm. Odd, that.
I lied. Of course it isn't. For idealogues like Anita, if they brought up examples counter to their prejudice, their world would fall apart.
There's several other examples where this trope fails completely. Off the top of my head the Lufia series (which is based on a female character), Lagoon (where the strongest character is a woman), Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger, Wild Guns, Illusion of Gaia (or Time in Europe) - amazing games with great characters, men and women. But what gripes is that Anita seems to think that when a woman or little girl (like in Pocky & Rocky) is strong, they're only trying to emulate strong male characters and that's just annoying. (No, really, she outlined this in her thesis - in college. http://ouyaboards.com/images/smilies/sm ... cepalm.gif)
I love Tomb Raider - but I am a first gen player so the re-booted ones have never been my favs. But Lara comes in for a lot of crap by orthodox feminists. I had to chime in (here http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/1732 ... ment157425 )

And, um...I can't help but see the similarities between Fascist organizations and the Slymepit. It's like the 'pitters are the internet equivalent of Fascist reactionaries like Golden Dawn -- or, hell, the early Nazis (OH NOES, I REFERENCED TEH NAZIS).
Perhaps I should go there and rub on Setar's face that I live in a country that suffered from a military dictatorship for about 30 years in the past century, and that he's triggering my sensibilities talking about me being a Fascist.
Setar, you dumb, useless fuck: unless you lived under a Fascist regime, you don't get to go calling others fascists.

Sure she would get victim points. But she really really needs to delete anything incriminating or potentially embarrassing like her sex videos and all emails before she takes them on.

Indeed. It's been a few years since I last drove a truck and went across DOT (US) scales but I seem to recall a sign at the entrance to the scale saying, "Stop Here When Light Is Red". With a green light you proceed slowly across the scale and then continue on across unless the light turned red at which point you would be instructed to park for an inspection or to be told you are overweight on your axles.

Some of you might have noticed that Ophie's latest post is about Richard Dawkins' take on the UCL segregation of women thing that occurred when Lawrence Krauss went to speak there. In other words, she reposted pretty much all of Dawkins' content, with a little bit of her blather in between. You know, the usual.
Ophie then decides to share her fount of wisdom on the Dawkins blog. Unfortunately, look what happened:

I've been doing my best to publicize this too. I learned about it via the invaluable Chris Moos of the LSE ASH society - who was also invaluable during the horrible episode last year when the LSE SU accused the ASH society of "Islamophobia". I did a post about it on Friday in the hopes that more people would be aware of the situation in time for the debate.

I updated the article to report the good news that the organizers had agreed there would be no gender segregation. Funny how it turns out they didn't mean a word of it! It's a stinking outrage.
So what does Ophie think of a moderator on another forum tampering with her spam? Well, let's check her twitter:

@SpokesGay Why indeed. I tried again and the mod removed the whole comment. Wtf is their problem? It contains relevant INFORMATION.
...and so on and so forth. Ophie's still complaining about her FREEZE PEACHES being curtailed at this very minute.   *does Zippy laugh*

Deanna, I don’t know. If it is standard practice it’s odd, because there’s nothing about removing links to blogs in the Terms & Conditions. And even if it is standard practice, they ought to be intelligent and flexible enough to make exceptions for actual information. The post isn’t just me gassing, it has information.
Get that? When a moderator on another blog tampers with her comment, they're denying the rest of us poor plebs the information she has to impart to us. However, when she tampers with or removes a comment wholesale from her blog...

It's interesting that Ophie is complaining about separate seating by gender at a talk at University College, London. Ha! Interesting - you're right. She was out on bond for the school "larceny" and then got picked up on the drug charges- 12 years suspended for the narcotics of which she has to serve 5, concurrent with 5 for the "larceny." Given the way the system works, it's hard to say what the outcome of the school case would have been if she hadn't gotten these other charges. The judge does say:
"This case is about the convictions for the sale of narcotics to an undercover police officer," the judge said. "I think you understand that because that is really the essence of what has gotten you into the predicament you find yourself today."
All that said - the war on drugs is ridiculous and effectively racist, and draconian punishments for "stealing" public school educations are preposterous. My only beef is Kassiane and co.'s apparent indifference to the full context of the story. Anyway - good catch, Jack.
If memory serves, Dawkins during one of the "outrages" tweeted to the effect, that the way to deal with drama whores, was to not go to their blogs. Having drama whores put links to their drama machine on his ground is probably contrary to his objective of ignoring them into oblivion.

I’ve seen so much energy spent on telling girls that “they can do it, too!â€, but I worry what message this is really sending. It seems to remind you that you belong to a minority, which is its own sort of reinforcement, much in the same way I was perpetuating gender bias as a kid. But there are studies that show when you present kids just with life as if it were normally always this way they simply accept it as such.
Makes a nice argument against identity politics in a way I wish I'd done first.
Oh ya, I've thought quite a bit about this. Seems to me that messages like "Girls can do [x]!" may plant seeds of doubt for girls about whether or not they themselves really can do [x].
I hear this a fair amount at math competitions, including one last month where the speaker invited to fill time after the test-taking & before the awards blathered on about how great it was to see so many girls there (indeed, about half were girls) and how girls really can be good at math and can go on to become engineers etc. I was embarrassed for him and a little angry. My guess is that most of the girls there hadn't been feeling out of place or outclassed, and of course half the kids there were ignored in his speech - so much for "motivational". Whereas welcoming & cheering on ALL the kids there, and celebrating their enthusiasm for math & their accomplishments, etc, would have seemed more appropriate and IMO probably more effective. I've also noticed that most of the math coaches at elementary schools in this area seem to be women, so certainly the kids have role models at that level for women who are enthusiastic about math and hopefully share that enthusiasm with ALL the kids they teach & coach. (At middle school & senior high school levels, the coaches do seem to be mostly men.)
I also cringe at all the talk about how "you don't have to be scared of math!" - what if it hadn't actually occurred to the person - probably more likely female than male - to be scared of math, they just saw it at dry & difficult or something. But that example focuses more on messages about math, whereas your focus is, appropriately, messages to people who are members of a sub-group assumed to perform less well, and need encouragement, in some specific area.
I went to elementary school in a small conservative farm town 25 years ago, yet our scholastic competitions were always pretty well gender balanced, and more than half of the top students at my elementary school and high school were girls. I know things can be different in extremely poor or highly conservative and religious places, but how much does that really affect the averages? As far as I can tell, most of western society is moving right along toward gender parity in all areas of education. I suspect that certain advanced fields that take a decade or more of study to get started in, women might always be a slight minority, just due to the ones that take time off to have kids....but I don't see how that is any kind of social problem.
Womens been doin' the thinky for a long time now!
I also agree that all the hoopla probably does more harm than good, at least in situations where it wasn't really a problem to begin with. Feeling "included on purpose" is almost as uncomfortable as feeling excluded on purpose. It's a lot like when christians go out of their way to show their "christian love" for us sinners.

Ophelia Benson â€@OpheliaBenson
@RichardDawkins @LKrauss1 I've tried to link to my Friday post that shows the orgs had agreed to no seg, at RDF, but mod keeps removing link
Ophelia Benson â€@OpheliaBenson
@SpokesGay @Doubting_Tom It's worse than that. They're removing a link to relevant & significant INFORMATION on a subject we all care about.
Ophelia Benson â€@OpheliaBenson
@SpokesGay Why indeed. I tried again and the mod removed the whole comment. Wtf is their problem? It contains relevant INFORMATION.
...and so on and so forth. Ophie's still complaining about her FREEZE PEACHES being curtailed at this very minute.   *does Zippy laugh*
Oh, this is priceless - when one of Ophie's posts gets moderated to remove a link, it is - no less - A War on Information:
A war on information now?

As I mentioned, Richard Dawkins has an informative post about the UCL debate yesterday at RDF. Very good. I tried to add to the information Richard provided by linking to the information I had provided on Friday, but a moderator removed the link to my post almost instantly.
Why?
I took a look at the Terms & Conditions, and I can’t find anything that forbids links to blog posts. I’m not surprised not to find such a thing, because that would be an incredibly stupid policy for a website to have. Blog posts can be informative, so it would be ludicrous to make a general policy against links to blogs.
So then why?
I have no idea. The Friday post is relevant because it documents that the organizers were on the record as having agreed to Krauss’s insistence that there be no gender segregation. It documents that this was public information on Friday.
Why on earth remove that?
I did another comment explaining the (obvious) relevance and asking for the link to be left, but that whole comment was deleted.
What is wrong with them? If they have an ironclad rule against posting blog links, why isn’t it visible somewhere? And if they do, why do they, when it would be such a stupid rule?
Then I wrote the post that quoted Chris Moos’s new letter to UCL, and commented at RDF to say I had new information and posted that link – and it was instantly removed.
Also, she's claiming that there's nothing in the T&Cs she linked to that should prevent her from posting a link to her blog. Given that FTB is a commercial enterprise, I think this might offer a clue:
No spam. That includes commercial advertising, anything posted multiple times on one or more threads, and the habitual posting of material that has simply been lifted from other sites in order to make a point.

It looks like somebody has hijacked the Prune's page - there's no quoting of anyone else in that post, so it can't be by FeeFee.

The article says the school issue was 5 years and she got a lot of sympathy before the drugs case. But it is not a well written article so easy to miss. Of course that still makes the Ops post misleading as it does not give the full picture.

Benson's hypocracy is gold though! "Omg! How darez they treat ME likes this, i haves the valuable on my blogz, its information! They are silencing ME! i IS ViCTIM of ze censors! They are just like the Mafia!"
It also doesn't help that she sat the nodding like a fucking bobblehead while Sivuku Hutchinson called Dawkins a white supremacist. The entitlement runs strong through the old bat. What the fuck does she expect? What a clueless bint.

It may very well be slightly unreasonable for them to strip the link in this case, but it sounds like she's getting obnoxious about it, and it's not like she doesn't have options -- she could simply say, "I blogged about this on Friday a few times - check out my blog at Butterflies and Wheels." Or as Tigz pointed out she could simply summarize the precious and crucial "information' in her comment at RDF without a link.
But as we all know -- it's all about Ophie (the Intrepid Reporter who reads twitter and facebook and knows some dude who emailed her about the incident -- I mean she's practically Woodward and Bernstein, the Pulitzer Committee will be calling any minute now) -- and if Ophie is unhappy about something, THE WORLD MUST HEAR ABOUT IT.
War on Information. That is pricelessly grandiose.
