The libertarian desire to ignore evidence and facts is what is destroying the MRM. Libertarians. They're definitely a thing.
I like their ideas on individual rights. But you're a motherfucking moron if you think private companies can replicate a country's infrastructure.

The reason it's a men's group is those misgynistic MRA's just want to oppress women. It's feminists who seek equality, by definition, case closed, discussion over, and if you disagree you're an anti-feminist. I learned that over at Pharyngula. ;)

Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
It's happened in Germany. Every fucking word has now to be in male and female form. So a typical news item sounds like this: "The Chancelloress thanked the voteresses and voters and called on the decisionmakeresses and decisionmakers to support the soldierettes and soldiers. The mayoresses and mayors will get more funding for the teacheresses and teachers."Altair wrote:Spanish has gendered nouns, and I've never seen any SJW or radfem using that particular line of thought. We do have our own problems with gender ideologies, but gendered words are not among them.BarnOwl wrote:Is there this much butthurt and flouncing over "gendered" words for radfem speakers of languages that have nouns with gender?
Or is this one of the great joys of the Anglophone world? "My native language doesn't have gendered nouns, so I'm going to randomly assign gender to verbs and nouns in order to maximize outrage."
There was a certain attempt recently to use both words when referring to people, things like "medicos and medicas" (male doctors and female doctors) or "niños y niñas" (boys and girls), but it didn't gain much traction.
The only thing they got was people to start sharing a Facebook status that explains that in Spanish the male-gendered noun covers both genders, so the double word use was unnecessary. It had a disclaimer saying it didn't mean any disrespect towards women, just the way the language works. That post got both men AND women to say "heh, cool, thanks for posting that, it's good to learn stuff" and that was the end of it.
Maybe being used to a gendered language make people less likely to worry about which gender a word has? After all, both genders get their share of good and bad words (both war and peace are female nouns, while cancer and love are both male nouns).
Puke.

FWIW, from Jan 5, 2012: http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... -critique/, where the criticism expressed of the treatment of tentacle porn in Japanese cartoons was that they got the biological details wrong and/or they didn't make it sensual enough; example of latter quoted here:
The other central feature of the cephalopod are the tentacles, and they’ve been ruined by bad Japanese cartoons, which seem to be entirely by and for teenaged boys who see everything as an extension of their penis. Bad hentai has tentacles erupting and thrusting everywhere, and it’s wrong. Tentacles don’t thrust, they insinuate. They grasp, they fondle. Tentacles are not a penis analogue, but an exotic combination of fingers and tongues. Hokusai got it right, but everything since has been downhill. I see tentacle dildos, I see someone who has missed the point.

I haven't noticed it on food labels, but it's listed in government-approved food additives in a quick search (see E513 about half-way down the page in the UK list here). Looks (from other brief mentions on various pages) it would be used as an "acidity regulator" meaning added to a food (or drink) with to bring the pH down.ConcentratedH2O, OM wrote:Nate Havens, a known cunt, says this on Meyers's blog:

Sulfuric acid is H2SO4. It's dangerous because it's a strong acid; dilute it enough and/or add it to something basic and voila that danger is gone. The sulfate [(SO4)2-, can't see a way to do subscripts or superscripts] is not inherently dangerous, people ingest stuff with "sulfates" all the time (including ferrous sulfate as an iron supplement and glucosamine sulfate as a supplement that may help osteoarthritis), and sulfate is normally produced (I think) and found (definitely; necessarily, in fact) in the body (see, for example, this abstract on renal sulfate handling).

Women in Secularism conference schedule is up: http://womeninsecularism.org/schedule.html
Glancing at it - Ron Lindsay gives the opening remarks on Friday, & after that all the speakers are female, including the panel discussion on "Gender Equality in the Secular Movement". If I were to be a fly on the wall for one session, I'd pick R. Elisabeth Cornwell on "Who Speaks for Feminism?", or possibly Amanda Marcotte on "How Feminism Makes Better Skeptics: The Role Rationality Plays in Ending Sexism".

Seems to me that as soon as one argues that a particular set of beliefs or values are wrong, and attempt to make social changes that limit the scope of those beliefs, and to promote or advance others, then you’re into the realm of politics. Which then raises a whole bunch of questions related to various practical details of implementations, with means and ends. Which then opens up the whole can of worms of various political, moral, and psychological philosophies.rayshul wrote:Having recently rewatched Thunderf00t's video, I have to say I missed originally his point about the fact that the target market for atheists is religious people - not minority atheists. I agree that introducing the political will dilute the message. As a matter of fact though from what I have seen the Libertarians are a small minority. I do not see them taking over. We have Left and Right wingers, Christians and Aethists in the mix. They are outnumbered by every other faction.Steersman wrote:Seems to me that as soon as one argues that a particular set of beliefs or values are wrong, and attempt to make social changes that limit the scope of those beliefs, and to promote or advance others, then you’re into the realm of politics. spends some time slagging on "anti-ftb" (amusing to note, no one he quotes is of the slymepit), but i'm sure some will still jump on his use of "cat-fight" as some "not getting it" gendered insult to slough off any criticism leveled at "their side" of the kerfuffle, in some "false equivalence" way, which is to say whenever anyone makes any criticism whatsoever

"Also, keep in mind: there is NOTHING that feminists could do better to prevent the avalanche of hate we get. Remember how Elevatorgate started? It was 'Guys, don’t do that.' How much more primly could we possibly conduct ourselves?"
I know, right? The remarkable thing about Watson, LSP, and co. is the "primness" with which they conduct themselves.
SallyStrange plucks her single-string banjo: "Good luck. I’ll look out for your videos. Maybe try making one about the obviously fucked up things the Bible says about men, women, and gender roles sometime, eh?"

Is LeftSidePositive trolling? LSP whinging about all the hate she receives is like a serial killer moaning about having to wash blood out of his clothes.

Oh, and there's this poe-ish comment:

I am sorry you are leaving NSC as you are a wonderful writer and an excellent addition to atheism and feminism.

Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
Well, the way she constructs her comment is subtle -- actually, Rebecca's manner (like Zvan's) is actually often "prim" - while she is accusing a mild critic of "parroting misogynistic thought" or suggesting that most people are rapists. But she's got bulldogs like Marilove and LSP, whom she allows to rant and spit venom for a few dozen comments (and if anyone complains, she'll admit the tone was "problematic," but moderation is such hard work (on a site getting a total of maybe 20 comments a day on non-controversial threads).Tony Parsehole wrote:Is LeftSidePositive trolling? If it were only as simple as that, fellow posteress or poster. The invasion of the Binnen-i and gender neutral terms has really fucked up the German language, my dear Mitposter/in or Mitpostender. ;)zou3gou3 wrote:It's happened in Germany.
Puke.
And now we can have a dispute about whether to leave off the slash and/or the hyphen or use a capitalised I. I went through all of that and barely escaped alive.

I doubt they'd take the position that men should have to register and women shouldn't. The pacifist-lefties will suggest abolishing selective service, and the rest, if pressed, will say, go ahead and include women. One gets the impression that most of them don't give much of a shit about minor details like wars and national defense when they've got important issues to deal with, like Japanese fetish-porn or someone's saying "chide" on the internet.Skep tickle wrote:WB also tweeted a link to AVfM article about a lawsuit being filed by a men's group against draft registration in the US claiming sex discrimination (esp given recent decision to let women into combat roles). FtB/Skepchick/FtB are bound to agree, dontcha think?

I like NSC's videos but on this point he is an idiot. I suspect he was wearing his Stockholme Syndrome specs when he wrote it. obviously NSC is too dumb to notice that only *one* small bunch of wackos want to impose a political ideology onto *all* atheists (including you NSC).
One of the fundamental flaws in the arguments of those professing to be staying out of this skirmish is that of the 1 billion or so atheists around the world there are many sides. Indeed, there are many sides in America alone. It's a bit like saying the following football (soccer, if you must) match has 'both sides' involved:
Real Madrid and Barcelona and Manchester United and Bayern Munich and Arsenal and Juventus
Vs.
Scunthorpe Utd Ladies (2nd XII reserves)
Yet, so often the 'neutrals' (which I suspect most of them really aren't) paint it as Barcelona Vs. Real Madrid.
In global percentage terms A+/FTBollocks is essentially non-existant, but to hear NSC and other 'neutrals' speak you'd think this was some kind of global atheist schism with half a billion on one side and half a billion on the other!
Please, so called 'sideliners', if you don't want to apply rational thought to what you see then please do what you claim to be doing. Keep the fuck out of the argument or admit that, no matter how you try to squirm your way out of it, you actually play for Scunthorpe Ladies (2nd XII reserves).
PS: If you've never heard of it you might want to 'Google' Scunthorpe - or you might not.

As a sexist, misogynist pig, what really offends me about Obama's "best looking attorney general" comment is that he clearly hasn't seen Florida's AG: Pam Bondi. I'd sure like to go Shakesville all over her lived experience, if you know what I mean. She can chide me any day.

Interesting that German (with "gendered" nouns) makes something "gender neutral" by including both male and female endings, and English goes for dropping the "gendered" ending ("poet" is much more common now than "poetess") or using the male version (e.g actor, for both sexes). Silly really since most (though not all, of course) of the reason for linguistic "gender" is syntactic, not semantic. Not that words in themselves are "gendered" in anything like the feminist sense.
I guess you could always come over to the dark side by making everything "das" and dropping all that der/den/dem/des etc stuff. Hasn't done English any harm, and our feminists get to define any word as gendered without bothering with all that grammatical nonsense.

I suppose that's a bias on her part then, in noticing more libertarians and seeing them as a risk. I assume you've been in the MRM longer than she has, so perhaps she could be reassured by the old "all things are fleeting, internet politics doubly so" tale.AndrewV69 wrote:I agree that introducing the political will dilute the message. As a matter of fact though from what I have seen the Libertarians are a small minority. I do not see them taking over. We have Left and Right wingers, Christians and Aethists in the mix. Where was Woolly when we had the White Nationalists show up? She would have freaked out I suppose. Anyway, the last WN left well over a year ago but they are still around. I know this because I still have one on my RSS feed.

Speaking of racism .. WTF is going on here? I need a decoder ring or something. One of the more maddening aspects of modern discourse is the attempt to interject the concept of racism into internecine ideological conflicts where it really isn’t appropriate.

Good luck with that. There are so many things wrong with Svan's second statement that any full response looks like it would be much longer than the original. Maybe the whole thing will just grow exponentially and consume all the electrons on the internet before it grinds to a halt.Skep tickle wrote:(considers a joke about the Middle Eastl, looks around for Git first) :D
The team's response to Stephanie's opening statement will probably be posted tomorrow.
Honestly, I admire the team's patience and the time and effort you are putting in - but it's hard to see this going anywhere.
