Does it? I've never been to Japan, so I wouldn't know. I've been friends/collaborators with a number of Japanese scientists, and I follow some aspects of Japanese culture (cooking, crafts, manga), but that's just dabbling. I don't think they make women wear burqas or stone them to death for talking to men who aren't relatives or spouses. "Criminally" implies "deserving of punishment," and I would want to experience the culture for myself before making such a sweeping judgment. But that's just me. ::shrugs::

Imagine replacing "Japan" in that tweet with another country ... say a Middle Eastern, Islamic country. Oh, the outrage! Islamophobia!
created entirely because of censorship

japan has much lower sexual assault stats despite having much more "rape culture promotion" according to some "people"

pz, try to have a point

any point

Oh yeah, they have those too:

Beyond that they even have clubs where people who aren't allowed to have animals in their apartments can go, have drinks and play with puppies and kittens, no joke.

OK, possible reason for the gender bias in science towards men in that study(1) was because the men were all sexually inexperienced and not getting laid. Should be simple enough to test this hypothesis if you ask me. I am contemplating sending an eMail to Shirley Tilghman(1) pointing this out. I wonder how she would react to this? Should be easy enough to set up a control group, and ask the women for example if they liked sex or not. But how would she go about ensuring the males were laid to their satisfaction?

If you're talking about general appearance and not faces then I don't think so. That club clearly aims to have all their men go for a specific look: black suit with open button white shirt underneath, manga-ish hairstyle, arched and trimmed eyebrows. They look the same in the same way any place using a dress code or uniform does, that's the point and probably exactly what their clients expect and want from their hosts.

I like how they have been sorted according to hairstyle. The Celine-Dion-cut at the top left all the way through to the Manga-face-covering-spike toward the bottom right.

Androgynous is a vert apt descriptor of some elements of Japan's pop-culture such as J-rock (also Korean-pop boy bands for that matter). For example, this is actually a guy:

....Where to begin? As usual, whenever the topic of gender comes up, these folk start talking out of their asses. This gem especially:
generations of repressed sexuality has a strange way of manifesting itself
Yeah, because of the long history of Christianity in Japan... OH WAIT -

I thought it was generally understood that not only were the Japanese not sexually repressed, but that among the modern nations they had some of the weakest sexual taboos on the planet. Remember, this is a culture where graphic depictions of sexual activity were essential elements of high culture(NSFW). I find it pretty telling of the crypto-neo-puritanism of the feminist blogs: when presented with examples of a liberated, non-repressed sexuality they hilariously confuse it with its opposite.

I think a more accurate description of Japan would be along the lines of 'a society with little sexual repression, where a great degree of representations of various forms of sexual activity are tolerated, but where, in the interests of promoting a Western ideal of modernity, there exists a confusing jumble of half-enforced (but mostly ignored) laws meant to curb pornography but actually doing no such thing, as the instinct to do so is an imposition from the West, and not a native feature of Japanese society.' The Japanese author Yukio Mishima once made a similar argument about heterosexuality in Japan - stating that it was a Victorian imposition from the West, and that no Japanese man was ever entirely heterosexual in a psychological sense - hence of course the ubiquitous androgyny.

That being said, anyone who assumes that the average Japanese person is constantly watching tentacle rape porn all the time is an idiot. Of course they don't.

About tentacles - first - the conflation of tentacles and rape is absurd. For instance: here's one of the generally acknowledged great masterpieces of Japanese art - Hokusai's the Dream of the Fisherman's Wife (super NSFW), which is clearly in no way a depiction of rape. Second - it exists for the same reason that pornography with animals exists in the West - because Westerners historically live in close proximity, ergo they occasionally feature in their pornography. The Japanese live in close proximity to the sea and things from the sea, ergo sea animals occasionally feature in their pornography.

As for Host Clubs - it's very clearly just the Geisha phenomenon in modern form. The initial form was the Hostess Club. The Host Club I would think would actually be evidence of the opposite - the performance of a male Geisha role for a female - if anything a sign of gender equality. I'm guessing he's making that old ignorant Western assumption that Geisha/Hostess = prostitute. Says more about the West than it does Japan.

Nate Hevans comments:
You know… I know Islamophobia is a real thing, but it’s getting to the point where Islamophobia has become as diluted and meaningless as antisemitism (which isn’t even the proper term for anti-Jewish bigotry).

Just like you can’t even nicely criticize Israel without being labeled an anti-Semite, now you apparently can’t criticize Muslims, even the fanatics, without being an “Islamophobe”.

Why are declarations of bigotry now being used to silent legitimate criticism?

Depressingly, it’s getting to a point where I no longer trust charges of Islamophobia. If I hear or read it levied at anyone, it makes me want to see what they have to say more, potentially putting more stock in what they have to say. That isn’t good, because I might give room to actual Islamophobia by accident. It’s just, the charge is losing all meaning, now.
"Why are declarations of bigotry now being used to silent legitimate criticism?" Can't imagine. Never heard of such a thing in my life.

Which reminds me of this comment 'Gulag regular CripDyke made over at EBW's:
Me, I’m for no hatred of persons at all. But we utterly lose our ability to fight oppression if we confuse hating an individual’s actions – or even hating an individual – with the institutionalized hatred of a class of people and things associated with that group. We have to maintain this distinction.
What a concept! Remick calls her out on it, and she replies with a predictable tealdeer about how if you use words associated with women's naughty-bits in the course of your legitimate criticism it means you think women's naughty bits are icky therefore women are icky therefore splash damage and misogyny because reasons.

Banter between good friends?

Nope. Sexist. Why? Who knows. According to Juliet Williams, a professor of gender studies at UCLA, it's "complicated."
“It’s complicated,” said Williams. “There’s a way in which a gesture of teasing a woman like you would tease a man is coming from a very respectful, and generous and open place as much as it could come from an othering or demeaning place.”
So take note: if you want to treat a woman as you would any man, like, say, call them handsome bastards: don't. It's sexist. Stop it. You're demeaning and othering.

Good grief. Don't get me wrong, I'm a lefty, but this is pathetic.
McSpewan wrote that Obama was being "lascivious," which earned her a charge of playing into "problematic racial narratives." She dutifully revised her post.

How can an entire nation have a 'criminally anything' culture? Nations tend to define criminal behaviors based on their own cultures.

I understand that nations can have unethical laws, or unethical cultural norms - but it's very unlikely to be accurately described as 'criminal'. To call Japan 'criminally sexist' is to convict the nation along American straight white cismale PZ Myer's standards. Privilege.

Years ago, I saw a program about cats and humans on PBS, and there was a segment about the clubs in Japan where people can go and play with cats and kittens. I found it really sad ... I know that Tokyo in particular is very crowded, and many people who really want to have a dog or a cat simply can't have them. And here in the US, hundreds and hundreds of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized in almost every city.

To counteract depressing thoughts, here's a Maru video:

That's possible - I couldn't say either way. Of course, the pressure of social disapproval is still very strong in Japan - but mostly along the lines of strong pressure towards conformism, rather than a projected puritanical self-loathing. There'd still be a high amount of pressure to conform to certain pre-ordained social roles I think.

Just in case you were wondering whether "Esteleth 'your right to free speech ends as soon as I am offended' stupid fucking starchild Tolkien worshiping douche" misspoke when she made that Google hangout comment:

I'm not totally sure who she's talking about, but the thread under discussion in the comments above hers is the "Libertarians suck" thread, and the only people I can imagine she's referring to would be Steven Landsburg (most likely) or possibly commenter Dietwald Claus.

sorry - above link is an article about the campaign to get Prof. Landsburg fired:
The group Women Organized to Resist and Defend has launched an online campaign to get Landsburg fired for his comments. The group describes his blog post as a “shocking” attempt “to normalize and minimize the effects of rape.”

SHIT!

Japan has some degree of sexism, as does everywhere else. But criminal? What does that even mean?

The social trend is for women to join the workforce until they get pregnant, at which point the vast majority are expected to become full time mothers. This is slowly changing. One thing you don't see very often is women complaining about it. Men and women seem to generally accept their societal roles, which are actually quite different from the West. While it is common for the man to work and the woman to stay home with the kids the norm is for women to control the purse strings. Most husbands get a monthly allowance out of their earnings while their wives manage the family finances.

Not everyone is content with this system and many choose a different lifestyle. This is also socially permissible in Japan. Working mothers are becoming more common as a result of the economic decline and inverted population triangle. Many young people are putting off marriage in order to further their own careers. The culture is gradually adapting to the modern challenges it faces. The majority of Japanese seem to like their society even though it is a struggle at times. Viewing it solely through a Western perspective is perplexing and utterly pointless, and judging it as 'sexist' by Western standards without bothering to understand it from the POV of Japanese betrays a lack of intellectual integrity.

Once again, there is sexism in Japan, particularly among the older generations. The problem lies in whether it is objective sexism, sexism only to Western eyes, sexism to the Japanese, or any other of a dozen permutations of the concept. If hostess clubs are sexist, are host clubs? If the cultural expectation of mothers to stay home with their children is sexist, what about the expectation of men to work ridiculous hours for an uncaring company in the salaryman lifestyle? If both parties are happy with their situation and want no more, is it still sexism?

Tentacle rape is not only uncommon, but hardly a Japanese phenomenon anymore; you can find all sorts of weird shit coming from many countries. As pointed out above, there is an historical precedent for tentacle sex. Notice that this is portrayed as an obvious sign of a sexist culture, while furries and bronies are simply an expression of sexual freedom.

And speaking of sexual freedom, Japan is one of the most sexually liberated countries around. All the major nightlife areas are littered with Love Hotels that charge by the hour for couples who need some privacy and alone time, or for you and your hooker. Prostitution is officially illegal, but unofficially and pragmatically you can hire someone anywhere. Brothels are ubiquitous in and around the red light districts. One-night stands and drunken hookups are commonplace. There is virtually no stigma associated with sex. The subject is not often broached in daily conversations but go out for a night on the town and you will see lots of people who will be fucking later.

source for these shitty opinions: I live and work in Tokyo and travel around. And talk to people, lots of people, in order to get their opinions and views rather than impose my own from the outside.

tl;dr PZ ran his mouth without actually bothering to gain any understanding of what the fuck he was talking about. Surprise!

Interesting. I read through the thread and couldn't see who called McEwan out for "playing into racist tropes". Did she just decide to make the change herself but not memory hole it? I've seen plenty of posts get memory holed there before so why not this one if no one called her on it? False humility maybe? She usually goes all Queen of Hearts when criticized about something. I've only ever seen her relent once, and that was when her a bunch of her disciples surprisingly took her to task for criticizing Tina Fey over not displaying the scar on her face. For those who don't know, Fey was attacked by a random psycho when she was a child and has a prominent scar on her face. Fey is pretty nonchalant about it herself but knows that it upsets her parents. Well according to McEwan, Fey isn't being the proper victim and should be showing the damn thing off at every opportunity. I was actually surprised to see McEwan begrudgingly accept that she might be wrong about that.

An interesting article here.
Consider the mindset of a person who is not hostile to criticism. “I arrived at my conclusions through facts, reason and logic. I’m prepared to explain how, and am happy to do so to any
interested, intellectually honest person.”

As a result, you get a calm, patient and substantive answer when you raise a question. Any impatience you find in a rational person will only be minor and occasional. This is because patience comes from confidence, and confidence comes from certainty

This! I have been thinking something similar for a while, and it is explained pretty well there, thanks.

During EG I started from the position that PZ et al were probably correct, I just had some reservations, but every time they dismissed an argument angrily or banned a dissenter rather than talking things through, they were basically shouting "I don't know what I'm talking about!" at the top of their lungs. If they were correct, then it was only by accident. That, plus their horrible treatment of those they disagree with, are why I'm a SP.

They'll also make the comment that people aren't obligated (for example) to debate evolution with creationists, and this is true. But, many many scientists and people interested in science are willing to debate creationists, despite not being obligated to. That's what a lot of the youtube atheists were about in fact. That's why there are so many evolution vs creationism and atheism vs religion debates in general. It's not because they are obligated to debate or debunk, it's because they are interested in the material and want to. The fact that none of these people want to, suggests that they either aren't actually interested in the material, or don't understand it in the first place.

You're welcome. I also posted a link to this article in the Nugent discussion thread as it may have some value there.

Oddly enough, it came to my attention through a video game reviewer's Youtube feed I subscribed to before I joined here. He is horribly under subscribed IMHO.

McEwen at some point added this explanation at the bottom of her post: "* On Twitter, Imani noted that the use of "lascivious" in reference to a black man is problematic. I have edited it. My apologies for not being more sensitive to the narratives into which "lascivious" played. "

Here's the conversation (w/o McEwen's initial tweet announcing her OP), linked as it's moderately large: http://i.imgur.com/9cqGEDE.png
