Ed Brayton wants people to sign Adam Lee's petition. This is a somewhat unusual, as Brayton views (viewed?) petitions as pointless, slacktavistic, intellectual masturbation exercises. Indeed, only two months ago, Brayton had a post on his blog about the utter futility of such petitions.

Makes you wonder...

*shrug*

Princess Jen is more interested in festering drama than reality, so she hasnt had the time to respond to me. Poor, poor princess. Text of the email I sent her. Nothing new to you all, but, *shrug*:
Dear Jen--

I wasnt using 'cancer' in quotes to accuse Christina of lying.

I used 'cancer' in quotes because the money Christina collected in response to her cancer was not used towards cancer treatment. Like someone collecting money for 'the homeless' and buying a WiiU with the cash doesnt mean there are no homeless people.

Christinas 'cancer' money was not spent on physician co-pays, it was not spent on medication co-pays, it was not spent on radiation, it was not spent on chemo, it was not spent on medical bills (due to my experience with medical catastrophe, it took the hospital ~4 months to send the bills when not dealing with insurance (my partner is uninsured) or 6 months with insurance.

It was not spent on gas to get to The City for cancer treatments, nor was it spent on hotel rooms/food/etc while in The City for treatment.

She told us what she spent it on. Mortgages and generic house bills and fancy shoes.

My partner almost died last year.

Walked into the ER with chest pain, was rolled out after two weeks in the ICU and 8 hours of open heart surgery. Because my partner does not have insurance, we payed $250 a month for prescriptions for a few months (we got it down to $50 a month now), and then got the bill from the hospital for $695,000.

Because my partner works in security (got about $15 an hour, so rollin in the $$$), not 'freelancing', any physical activity was out out of the question for 6 months, so we lived on my grad student stipend (two people, two children, dog, rent, gas, utilities, food... and medical bills), and 6 months after that a slightly better but reduced income due to my partners lost clients. Its just now getting back to 'normal'.

During this time, I borrowed/beg/stole a grand total of $0.

I also bought a grand total of 0 $250 shoes, so that probably helped.

I did buy shoes, however. With a little effort you can get nice things for cheap. I got running shoes from Amazon-- last years model (half price) plus I used gift cards I got using Swagbucks (I signed up for it to get extra cash). Thats also how I bought Christmas presents (actually, *a* present) for my partners kids so they could get something from Santa.

And while all of this was happening, PZ Myers, Greg Laden, Stephanie Svan, and why, Greta Christina (and for all I know, you) were actively trying to interfere with my income by getting me fired/banned from atheist conferences, getting my blog shut down, and getting me fired from graduate school.

You want to act like youre the most ethical person on the planet-- YOU care about the poor, the disenfranchised, the downtrodden, the women the gays the blacks the Hispanics-- A PLUS!!!--- while all us other atheists (who have been volunteering, donating, welcoming everyone to our local communities in the real world, dedicating our lives to people in need, for decades) dont give a shit.

*YOU* dont give a shit, Jen. You care about drama and how you can appear to be a moral human while doing as little as humanly possible. Pulling bullshit stunts so you can, momentarily, seem like an interesting person.

Bruce McGlory has been on twitter since July of last year. In all that time he has acquired only one follower. https://twitter.com/BruceMcGlory

This may be down to his winning personality and witty, cogent style of argument, examples of which are as follows:

@justinvacula havey ou ever considered suicide, bigot? I think you'd be REALLY good at it.
Really, his twitter feed is an extraordinary continuum of absolute bitterness, defeat and mouth-breathing fury. I'd recommmend it if you've accidentally taken too many uppers.

It was a big battle. Something about her plagiarizing ideas from a Latina feminist (who afterwards said "fuck feminism") and failing to giving her credit. Marcotte said that those were HER ideas, even after she wrote the article right after attending a conference in which the Latina ex-feminist talked about the same topic (Latina ex-feminist talked a lot about inmigration and abuse against Latin women or something). Anywho, right after that, Miss Marcotte was preparing to release her book and used an image of a blondie being abducted by King Kong (Note for non-US peeps: that's similarly offensive as to showing a pic of a black person eating watermelon). A whole bunch of black feminists (now EX-feminists) got angry. So, the image was changed and then they put this in place:
http://www.feministe.us/blog/wp-content ... otte_3.jpg

...black ex-feminists got angrier and there was a whole bunck of fuck yous, flouncing, renouncing of feminism and white-knighting from Hugo himself. It was very very funny.
Marcotte never apologized to black ex-feminists. Tagged as a racist bitch.
Yeah, I remember the kerfluffle over the book. Marcotte dug in her heels and took quite awhile to admit any wrong doing or apologize. In other words, she doubled down. Oh the irony! Here is a blog post by a feminist (a biracial woman) harshly criticizing Marcotte and the feminist community for this incident:
http://dearwhitefeminists.wordpress.com/update/

I wasn't aware of any allegations of plagarism. I'll try googling it but if you have a link I would appreciate it! If I find a good link about the incident I'll post it. On a separate but related issue, does anyone remember that Google Plus hangout with Myers, Watson and McCreight where they were discussing Atheism Plus? I can't remember who else was involved (if any) but Watson mentioned that she used to live in Seattle. She complained that guys on the street would frequently yell, "Yo baby, what's your name?!" Why did she have to include the "Yo"? She even imitated a very stereotypical accent when she said it, if you know what I mean. It came off as rascist to me.I was surprised that more people didn't find this offensive. Especially considering how little it takes to offend some people in the Atheist/Skeptic community these days.
All this makes me wonder if racism is a big problem in the feminist movement. I mean, the feminist movement is overwhelmingly made up of white, educated, middle class (or above) women. Food for thought..

I can see four reasons why feminists would see this as sexist (keep in mind, I don't agree, I just understand how easily feminists find offense)

1: Attire. There are two women prominently displayed in sexy outfits. The main one, and a poster. The poster is actually art from the cyberpunk game books, but we should ignore that, as context doesn't matter. Te game world is also highly sexualized, and it is a matter of style to show off your cybernetics, which explains why the fully converted main women is showing so much Flesh metal, but again, context doesn't matter.

2: A woman is being shot at. This promotes violence against women. Doesn't matter that it is police shooting at someone who kiled 14 people... again, context doesn't matter.

3: The idea that it could be a woman who was so violent to mass murder 14 people. The narrative that only men are violent must be maintained. Doesn't matter that there is a mechanic in the game world where getting too many cybernetics can result in your character becoming a sociopath.. remember, context doesn't matter.

4: A woman is being told to take "personal responsibility" (via the song lyrics). I would hope the reason feminists might not like this is obvious at this point. Never mind the context.

Maybe you too would like to post your picture so that he and others can make a similar judgement of you?

How old did you say you were? ….
Just jumping in to take yet another opportunity to say it: It's totally kosher for me to make fun of his looks, then? Because I wouldn't fuck him with Half-fish's dick.

I’m OK with it, although I wonder whether you would be saying that if you had, for example, a cleft palate. And I still think it clutters up the conversation unnecessarily. But at least you wouldn’t be being hypocritical about it; you would be meeting him on a more-or-less level playing field – which tends to be indicative of some commendable self-awareness. Although didn’t franc suggest that only the hypocritical are self-aware? ….
I feel pretty safe in assuming Rystefn would be Rystefn even if he were a hairlipped, wall-eyed, hydrocephalic, clubfooted leper with boils on his cornea.
You might well be right on that. However, it seems that we are all largely if not entirely the products of our experiences and our genetic inheritances – the latter apparently being one of the main bones of contention between different groups of feminists. But while putting Rystefn and his brain with his current set of experiences into those bodies you described might produce the reactions you suggest, it seems more likely that if he had grown up in those bodies and had had the related experiences then I expect he would have been a very different person and reacted in very substantially different ways.

Seems quite evident that we are all susceptible to varying degrees to various traumatizing experiences: what can break one individual can wind up being like water off a duck’s back to another – probably very dependent on both genetics and prior experiences. For instance, your own rather traumatic experiences seem to have been surmounted rather well, although that might have been due, in part, to having had some very good parents who “had your back” – not everyone is so fortunate which tends to be a strike or two against them before they even get to bat.

Reminds me also that many people have phobias of one sort or another about various situations, events, and objects, the responses being largely automatic reflexes over which the sufferers frequently have little control. For instance, SkepticalCat has a phobia about large maps on which Michael Shermer, in his The Believing Brain – highly recommended, might offer something in the way of any explanation:
Shermer wrote:Specifically, it is the job of the posterior superior parietal lobe to orient your body in physical space (the back and upper regions of this lobe sit above and to the rear of the temporal lobe above your ears). This is the part of the brain that can tell the difference between you and not-you, which is to say everything else outside your body. When this part of the brain is quiescent during deep meditation and prayer … subjects … report feeling at one with the world or in deep contact with the transcendent. [pg 107]
By which token, one might argue that when SkepticalCat views a map that lobe changes somehow and that “difference between you and not-you” is lost or becomes fuzzy, producing some sense of vertigo. I very much expect that various experiences, traumatic and otherwise, have similar effects on us, the magnitudes being a consequence of both genetics and other prior experiences.

Today it was 70 degrees, for some reason (its going to be in the 30s again in a couple days, lol) so I took off Arnies red hoodie (he FUCKING LOVES that hoodie). Thanks to Nanny Benson and Melody Hensley I now cant look at him without cracking up.

Sara E. Mayhew6:42 PM (edited) - Public
It seems Stephanie Zvan of Almost Diamonds continues to deny that CFI DC director Melody Hensley's tweet that there are women speakers who make critiques of Skepchicks because they seek speaking gigs and male approval is a sexist remark.

Here's what's sexist about Hensley's tweet; saying that the motivation I and other female speakers have for critiquing Skepchicks is to gain male approval.

Saying that women are criticising other women because they want male attention is implying their motivation is sexual. Pairing it with the claim that critiques of Skepchicks could further your career gives the impression that male approval is related to this motivation.

A failure to recognise this is caused by the cognitive dissonance of this sexist comment coming from CFI DC director and organiser of the Women in Secularism conference. Choose any prominent male skeptic and picture the reaction if they had made these remarks.

Hensley never made any effort to apologise or at the very least clarify her remarks (after the claim of being taken out of context) to myself or the other woman tagged in the tweet. Unprofessional behaviour from a community organiser and CFI Director.

The term "ragging" alone can considered sexist, since it's often associated in a derogatory way with a women's menstrual cycle.

I just need to point out that criticism of his tactics is not criticism of him as I only attack ideas not individuals
yeah. I read at least part of that, and I have to say, Justin, you didn't come off well. It came across as kind of a douchey move in general, and knowing that lot even a little, you had to know what the reaction would be. Exactly.

It seems to me you were setting yourself up for what happened, and I'm not sure why you picked the worst possible way to do what you did.

In general:

Attractive men/women promo'ing a booth? Awesome, but for fuck's sake -

1) make sure they know something about the product. I loved that Alsoft did this with Susan, a fucking Macworld legend. Absolutly beautiful, and they made sure she knew the product well. Talking about volume format details with a classic texas beauty queen type? There is NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS. This goes just as much for men. You want to hire hotties, great, but for fuck's sake, they should know how much the goddamned thing COSTS.

2) Make sure there's a point if 1) isn't done. For example, last year at Macworld, there was a company that had really attractive men and women on a trampoline. Why? Because the product were headphones designed to be worn during sports. Showing them off with people who did trampolining as a semipro sport was great. A fun demo, and really showed that these things stay on during almost anything.

In other words, use them well. Tits/Dick just to have tits/Dick? Well, great, but that's what strippers are for. Don't hire someone and make the only thing they are able to do is point me at the booth. Let me be able to at least have a basic convo about the product with them. if I want tech details, sure, point me at an engineer. But pricing, availability, OS version? That's not complicated stuff.

However, the funny thing is that this being such an "issue", that when a company had an actual employee who was an attractive woman at their booth, on the last day or so of MW, noted feminist blogger, Violet Blue, who, mind you, had pitched an epic fucking FIT because at a party, she wasn't assumed to be a programmer on appearance alone, assumed she was staring at the world's saddest booth babe.

Fucking awesomeness, right?

From my POV, I'm not really in favor of people hired at a computer show to be hot. Not a good fit. Now a car show? Different history, different environment. But at a computer/electronics show? Well, barring AVN, yeah, that kind of shit is just kind of "meh" to me.

Why would you need booth babes at an atheist/skeptic convention anyway? Hey, here's an... erm, um, new book. A t-shirt. A turd on a string. Yep, these are high value products and we would have had booth-babes but we outlawed them ahead of time.

I wonder how many SurlyRamics you'd have to sell to employ a booth babe. Probably like half the table per hour.

I genuinely dont need any donations. If I was in genuine need, I am lucky enough to have several family members who would help as much as they could. I also have an excellent credit score and could get a loan from a bank if things Got Real Bad. Of course since our finances are separated, theres always the option of my partner just declaring medical bankruptcy and we will be fine, but we would like the hospital to recoup as much money as they can. They unquestionably saved my partners life. But we are going to try to pay off as much as we can.

So they put a petition up, claiming they want it to be about diversity at conferences and harassment policies, when most of these organizations have already responded to these calls over the past year?

Oh wait, upon further reading I see they really want to use this as a means to tarnish Thunderf00t, who Ed Brayton himself said he wanted him tossed out of the atheist movement, to the point where he will basically not be welcome at any event in the United States run by these organizations.

Funny that PZ, Brayton and their ilk don't say a fucking thing about their FTB allies like Stephanie Svan and Jason Thibeault coming to the rescue of actual harassers like Greg Laden, even when he is bullying people who are still on FTB. What a joke. I guess expressing skepticism of the dogma of the Church of Feminism is a far, far worse sin than threats of actual violence or continual attempts to intimidate by release of personal information.

They call it a petition for more diversity, when really it's a petition for a circle jerk and to confirm their own biases.

And to one-up Thunderf00t, the cunting minge mangler.

Here's Ugo's story as reported by the Estonian TV. He's playing himself in the reconstruction (may take a while to load).
The guys interviewed are those who accidentally ran over, rescued him and paid for his complex reconstructive surgery.

http://www.reporter.ee/2009/08/09/auto- ... peremeest/

Here he is with me now. He has since completely healed, I'm happy to report.
Unfortunately, I don't have time for a second one, at the moment.

Taking someone like Anita Sarkeesian as the prime example of feminist criticism of game(or at least the prime profiteer off on no actual content), the robot disguised as a human woman in that video could have been dressed in a burka and people like her would call foul and claim it's sexist or misogynist.

If a woman in a game is under any threat, it's misogyny. If the woman is tough and fights back, then she's just a "man with tits". If a woman is a killer such as in this vid then it's male fears of female empowerment, and all that. Nobody can win unless you make an indie game with a funny looking non-gendered cartoon character or a puzzle game with inanimate objects. I've even seen Portal called sexist. Yes, Portal. WTF.
I wonder if they've done that with skyrim, given the consistent lack of T&A in that game, other than the boobie hole in some of the armor sets for women.
There is definitely a strong feminist influence in Skyrim. Just walk around Whiterun as both sexes and listen to the different dialogs. As a man, your told all about how bad men are or told you better be a good husband (paraphrasing) while, as a woman, you're told about how hard it is to be a woman in skyrim (despite the gameplay being exactly the same, and the only real difference is that the NPC dialog, where it is different, treats you like an child rather than a wifebeater).

Wait, so in that video made by Watson at a con where the male stripper from whose crotch those Skepchicks were drinking shots from wasn't at all knowledgeable about skepticism? You mean he was there just to be a hot bod to provide some eye candy for some of the attendees? No, can't be, because that would be hypocritical.

Brilliant! I was so into the cgi and music I missed that connection completely!
