That is because when it comes to birth control, men don't have the right to make the choices that women are able to.

One would think that a pharmaceutical company that has an easy option for men (like a pill) would make a fortune on it. There are reasons all the research and money go to birth control for women.

A reversible, oral male contraceptive has been "just around the corner" for 40 years.

After decades of promising starts and dead ends, thereâ€™s still no male equivalent of the female birth control pill. Itâ€™s just not that easy to make an effective, safe, cheap, targeted, well-tolerated, bioavailable, easy-to-manufacture, side-effect-free, and (whew) completely reversible drug to block the production of sperm cells.

It's "not that easy" after 40 years, when it's not that important. If the scientists had a quarter of the money spent on finding new birth control for women, it would have been available long ago.

In the past few years, though, biologists have opened up some new genetic and molecular leads for disrupting spermatogenesis, and thereâ€™s optimism among reproductive scientists again. How close are we to the male pill this time? What pathways look promising? And will men really take it?

There's part of the problem right there. When the subject has been discussed with numerous women, the overall consensus has been that they do not trust a man to take it. Ironic, isn't it.

Experts in the field think pharmaceutical companies have shut down male contraceptive programs because the companies would rather spend resources on drugs that have a better chance of approval.

Most experts in the field agree that the standard would be a 1% failure rate, similar to that of female hormonal contraceptives. But unlike the female pill, a male drug faces a much tougher biological task. â€œWomen make one egg a month,â€ says Amory. â€œMen make a thousand sperm every second, from the time they go through puberty until the day they die.â€

So how long will it be before men can have their own birth control pill? Amory jokes that people in the field have been promising a drug in the next five to 10 years for the past 30 years. He thinks a decade sounds about right, and most scientists working on nonhormonal methods agree.

In the end, Blithe says, the path to the first male contraceptive drug will be the toughest: â€œOnce the first one gets out there and companies see that it is a viable, lucrative product, there will be more effort put into the next one.â€

but here is the real issue:

Research on the safety and effectiveness of using ultrasound treatments to kill sperm has undergone since the idea originally came about following experiments in the 1970s by Mostafa S. Fahim which noticed ultrasound killed microbes and decreased fertility. As of 2012 a study conducted on rats found that two 15-minute treatments of ultrasound delivered 2 days apart in a warm salt bath effectively lowered their sperm count to below fertile levels. Another small study involved dogs, and found that after three ultrasound applications the dogs' ejaculate contained no sperm. Further experiments on its effectiveness on humans, the longevity of the results, and its safety have yet to be conducted.

I can't get behind this responses to the FtB/A+/SC stuff when they are couched in terms of anti-feminsm, for two reasons. Firstly it is really shitty PR when average Joe or Jane public see feminism as a force for good (if sometimes too earnest). It looks to me like SubMor replaced the original limerick with a completely different poem.

I didn't see anyone here already comment on an apparent switcheroo in poems so wanna check that I'm not hallucinating. Here's what I'm finding:

A search on the Atheism+ site shows 14 results on a search for "wanker"; the most recent 2 are shown here: (linked due to width): http://i.imgur.com/c7tHP.png

Those 2 capture a limerick using this word, once in "Bureaucracy is Idiocy" and once in a thread split from that, "'Just a Joke' in action?", That limerick, as shown in the link above, goes:

There was a young lady called Buckle Who lived life with calmness and chill Until she dealt with a banker who was a real wanker and she ended up feeling quite ill.

However, the poem currently in those 2 posts, and in the initial post by Buckle in the "Bureaucracy" thread is completely different, including not a limerick:[spoiler]

By the way, bureaucracy is a really hard word to spell... I copied and pasted. :lol:
So I was at the banks etc today and got annoyed... decided a poem would make me feel better. I'd quite enjoy it if anyone else had some lines to add about their truly wonderful dealings with the delightful world of bureaucracy!

Not too suprisingly, each of the poem-posts which now does not include the word "wanker" (nor anything like the original limerick), was edited by SubMor.

SubMor & the other mods: keeping Atheism+ forum safe so no delicate snowflake will have to read/see/hear bad werdz in a jaunty limerick about how frustrated someone got with ~~patriarchy~~ bureaucracy.
