Re: The Periodic Table's Younger, Sexier, Sibling Thread...
That is because when it comes to birth control, men don't have the right to make the choices that women are able to.KarlVonMox wrote:Sounds good! But progress seems agonizingly slow.sacha wrote:new information about a previous conversation -
alternative to vasectomy and easily reversible: birth control for men
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversible ... r_guidance
Harriet Hall writes about it here: http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/ind ... l-for-men/
Autonomy for men in regards to birth control, and easily reversible. I hope it passes clinical trials.
One would think that a pharmaceutical company that has an easy option for men (like a pill) would make a fortune on it. There are reasons all the research and money go to birth control for women.
A reversible, oral male contraceptive has been "just around the corner" for 40 years.
It's "not that easy" after 40 years, when it's not that important. If the scientists had a quarter of the money spent on finding new birth control for women, it would have been available long ago. After decades of promising starts and dead ends, there’s still no male equivalent of the female birth control pill. It’s just not that easy to make an effective, safe, cheap, targeted, well-tolerated, bioavailable, easy-to-manufacture, side-effect-free, and (whew) completely reversible drug to block the production of sperm cells.
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/ ... live-chat/In the past few years, though, biologists have opened up some new genetic and molecular leads for disrupting spermatogenesis, and there’s optimism among reproductive scientists again. How close are we to the male pill this time? What pathways look promising? And will men really take it?
There's part of the problem right there. When the subject has been discussed with numerous women, the overall consensus has been that they do not trust a man to take it. Ironic, isn't it.
This article outlines many of the reasons why it has not been successful:
Despite decades of research on male contraceptives, no treatment has moved past clinical trials to reach the market. And in the past five years, the few pharmaceutical players working on male contraception have mothballed their programs. Experts say part of the problem is that, for several reasons, the normal hurdles drugs face—achieving high efficacy and low toxicity—are even higher for male contraceptives.
n 2002, two pharmaceutical companies, Schering and Organon, teamed up to work on a hormonal method similar to the one women use. But the collaboration was short-lived; it ended in 2006 because Schering thought that the required multiple injections would deter men from using the method. Schering’s program completely stopped in 2007
Experts in the field think pharmaceutical companies have shut down male contraceptive programs because the companies would rather spend resources on drugs that have a better chance of approval.
Most experts in the field agree that the standard would be a 1% failure rate, similar to that of female hormonal contraceptives. But unlike the female pill, a male drug faces a much tougher biological task. “Women make one egg a month,†says Amory. “Men make a thousand sperm every second, from the time they go through puberty until the day they die.â€
So how long will it be before men can have their own birth control pill? Amory jokes that people in the field have been promising a drug in the next five to 10 years for the past 30 years. He thinks a decade sounds about right, and most scientists working on nonhormonal methods agree.
Male Birth Control Pill May Be Ready Soon - the amount of times I have seen that headline over decades is telling. In the end, Blithe says, the path to the first male contraceptive drug will be the toughest: “Once the first one gets out there and companies see that it is a viable, lucrative product, there will be more effort put into the next one.â€
but here is the real issue:
Research on the safety and effectiveness of using ultrasound treatments to kill sperm has undergone since the idea originally came about following experiments in the 1970s by Mostafa S. Fahim which noticed ultrasound killed microbes and decreased fertility. As of 2012 a study conducted on rats found that two 15-minute treatments of ultrasound delivered 2 days apart in a warm salt bath effectively lowered their sperm count to below fertile levels. Another small study involved dogs, and found that after three ultrasound applications the dogs' ejaculate contained no sperm. Further experiments on its effectiveness on humans, the longevity of the results, and its safety have yet to be conducted.

Of course no one expects every single person to find every single attempt at humor funny, but these people go out of their way to find things not funny, especially if it pokes fun at them. They all were scratching their heads about those "Peezus and O" sendups, Paula Kirby's FTB Nativity scene, as well as other things. It's not simply that these people lack a sense of humor, it's that they need to maintain the united front at all costs. And yet another thing these morons have in common with Christian fundamentalists: The complete inability to chuckle at a joke made at one's own expense. Fundies and Peezites always pretend they just don't understand what's so funny about things that lampoon them, and lambaste the creator of said lampoonage as stupid and/or not just funny. I can't get behind this responses to the FtB/A+/SC stuff when they are couched in terms of anti-feminsm, for two reasons. Firstly it is really shitty PR when average Joe or Jane public see feminism as a force for good (if sometimes too earnest). Secondly I'm not opposed to feminism, I am opposed to what a handful of people are saying has to happen within the online atheist community based on their interpretation/theory of feminism. Actually, more than that, what I really object to are the dishonest methods being used.rocko2466 wrote:Hey

On this topic, does the social justice movement have any academic backing? Setar comparing it to evolution vs. creationism got me thinking. Are there journals and the like for it? Or is it all just reddit and blogs?

Holy Shit! So Tf00t uploaded a new video on YT and there is a feminist by the username Ruby Dynamite commenting on the video. She just claimed that women have been molested at TAM. Brian Dunning of Skeptoid is a guy the Skepchicks went after twice for alleged sexism. A couple of months after the second time, in the midst of the Elevator hoo-hah, Brian wrote an article that included this:
The Skepchicks haven't messed with him since. Nor have they mentioned this incident. Sexual harassment was the Big Issue of the day, yet they ignored this. You've gotta wonder why, hmmmm...Brian Dunning wrote:After my wife and I attended our first two TAM conferences, we almost considered never coming back. The reason is that we both received an unusual number of unwanted sexual advances — interestingly, they were all from women (some of whom have personally been quite vocal in criticizing me for what they perceive as sexism pervading skepticism, but we’ll save hypocrisy for a different discussion for a different day).

They just can't help making things up, can they? If there were such a large amount of molestation, it would have been reported by now. Re: The Periodic Table's Younger, Sexier, Sibling Thread...
I think he's trying to defend his friends, he's gotten pushed into the "feminist" thing by new, outside influences and he didn't know much about it to begin with, so he's really a blank canvass that those friends of his can paint any picture they want upon. I wish it weren't so, but, yes, it does make him look like an ass. Once upon a time (during Curiousgate) I thought if there was anyone who could bring a balanced, fair and civil debate to the table, it would be him. Alas, the rift is too wide and the punishment for thoughtcrime might just be too great.decius wrote:Dillahunty is officially an arse.Tkmlac wrote: . AronRa, tf00t and Matt Dillahunty. Do you have any evidence that would help?Steersman wrote:Or more skepticism in more women ....sacha wrote:QFTLMU wrote:
All this concern about women in skepticism. I think maybe we should be more concerned with having *skeptics* in skepticism.
Just a joke, no evidence actually being sought here.
But LMU's "we should be more concerned with having *skeptics* in skepticism" - that hits the bullseye.
Great video, Al. Thanks. though I'm not a loud voice, nor a coherent one, nor a productive one, I feel proud to be providing one of the places where people like you can expose the fucking idiots and bullies for the stupid cunts they are.

Place where people can expose the fucking idiots and bullies for the stupid cunts they are. New pit board tag? Probably too long.Lsuoma wrote:Great video, Al. Someone who saw the original please double check this.Jonathan wrote:Good grief.
Someone on Atheism+ posts a limerick that includes the word "wanker" and is accused of sexual harrassment!
What is wrong with these people?!
It looks to me like SubMor replaced the original limerick with a completely different poem.
I didn't see anyone here already comment on an apparent switcheroo in poems so wanna check that I'm not hallucinating. Here's what I'm finding:
A search on the Atheism+ site shows 14 results on a search for "wanker"; the most recent 2 are shown here: (linked due to width): http://i.imgur.com/c7tHP.png
Those 2 capture a limerick using this word, once in "Bureaucracy is Idiocy" and once in a thread split from that, "'Just a Joke' in action?", That limerick, as shown in the link above, goes:
However, the poem currently in those 2 posts, and in the initial post by Buckle in the "Bureaucracy" thread is completely different, including not a limerick:
There was a young lady called Buckle Who lived life with calmness and chill Until she dealt with a banker who was a real wanker and she ended up feeling quite ill.
Buckle supposedly wrote:Bureaucracy is a catastrophe
A waste of time for you and me
A form for formality
no tit nor tat nor cup of tea
it's elemental mediocrity
that's petty officiality
To understand bureaucracy
here's a degree in nonsensology
The bureaucrat's autocracy
infuses me with inordinacy
I'd rather follow astrology
Than deal with this bureaucracy.
/end rant
By the way, bureaucracy is a really hard word to spell... I copied and pasted.
So I was at the banks etc today and got annoyed... decided a poem would make me feel better. I'd quite enjoy it if anyone else had some lines to add about their truly wonderful dealings with the delightful world of bureaucracy!
Not too suprisingly, each of the poem-posts which now does not include the word "wanker" (nor anything like the original limerick), was edited by SubMor.
SubMor & the other mods: keeping Atheism+ forum safe so no delicate snowflake will have to read/see/hear bad werdz in a jaunty limerick about how frustrated someone got with
