Beavis and Butthead are loveable? More like feckless to the point of sociopathy. Perhaps that's just me not understanding the characters. My impression is that Judge intended Beavis and Butthead to be an unsympathetic portrayal in contrast to Hank Hill. Hill is basically good natured, the other two are more inclined to torture cats.
Humans are ridiculous. We stare TV commercials & laugh at farts. Puberty in particular is a stage of impulsive acting-out, experimenting with patently bad-ideas, exercise of poor taste in clumsy attempts to establish our growing individual identity/ vs. how mommy tried to form us.
Aristotle said Drama the drama-masks of Tragedy & Comedy-- arouse "terror and pity". In a Tragedy, we feel terror that our problems might tie us in similar knots to the poor wretch on stage. In Comedy we feel pity for the hopeless cartoon of a character-- who is far-more screwed-up than we could ever be.
In both cases, our attention alternates-- between focus on our own usual me me me inner-monologue-- and focus on the not-us life of the character on stage-- then back to ourselves as we recognize our own folly.
It's normal for kids to be sociopaths, until they stumble into maturity. It's also normal, reflecting back, to misremember our past-selves, as if the person-we-are-now merely inhabited a younger body. We forget how clueless and irresponsible we once were. Beavis & Butthead are like the monkey cage at the zoo. Funny reminders of our not-so-glorious origins.
Beavis gets a nose bleed. Butthead sticks a tampon in his nose.
"I feel fresh."
"Yeah, I feel free."
"Let's go play some tennis."
"Yeah, and let's go horseback riding!"
Spoiler: Bobby Hill is pathetic, too. And he grows up to be a perfectly-good Hank.
If all blacks were so shaken by the aftershocks of slavery-- that they could-only bear to envision themselves in Saintly images of dignity and uplift-- then only whites-in-blackface would be able to Humanize blacks-- as equal-- fully human-- equally ridiculous-- Just Like Everyone Else.
