Speaking of some Indian tribes, I think it's time to boast about my knowledge of Coast Salish and Kwakiutl culture instead of just my woodland skills:
I grew up, went to school and worked with local First Nations. One friend in particular I hunted and fished with for about 4 decades was an FBI Salish whose mother was raised on a remote community and until her death was one of the last of a dozen speakers of a unique dialect
from the NE area of the Georgia basin, AKA Salish Sea.
Keep in mind, this is the part of the area where the Sasquatch legend comes from.
My friend and I had some discussions on squatch, and he had spoken with some of the elders about it. There are degrees of stories told by the Salish. For instance, there is a local prominent glacier near here. The story is that it is a great white whale named Queneesh that was stranded on the mountain after a great flood. The Indians do not literally believe it, it is considered a myth. There are other stories such as tales about battles with other tribes that are regarded as accurate history.
The sasquatch legend is similar to, and has been sometimes confused with stories of the Wild Man and Wild Woman that lived in the forest and would raid the villages and kidnap or kill the people.
My friend did not believe Sasquatch was real, that it was a myth possibly derived from the Wild Man stories, which he regarded as true. Many locals had a rite of passage for young man where they would leave the village and go off to survive on their own for a period of time. Also, some crimes were punished by temporary or permanent banishment. Some of the young men and the criminals never came back to live among the tribe but became Wild Men. Tradition has it that they would return to the villages to capture women for a wives or for other reasons. (IIRC cannibalism may be a part of some of the accounts).

Actually, I have seen a wake that big by a fish in a river. You ever been sturgeon fishing FtP? No way I could handle it in my decrepitude, but they is some mighty big fish. Tasty too. You can't keep the big ones, but even the smaller ones are good for a shoulder injury or two, and a delicate meat with a nutty flavor.

The only IRL sturgeons I've seen were in an aquarium. The biggest fish I've seen in the wild was a basking shark that was hanging out near the beach we were fishing for pink salmon from. Somewhere near 20 feet long?
That is unless you count whales as fish. :drool:
Speaking of cryptids, it wouldn't surprise me if sturgeon were responsible for some of the accounts of lake monsters.
