Nobody's mentioned Bates Motel yet. Freddie Highmore as a young Norman Bates is incredible.

The Divide (2011)
People trapped in an apartment building basement after a nuclear blast.
Fairly dark movie but well done.

@ John Greg, why I though POLLOCK was a waste of time.

First off, I'm not a huge fan of biopics. Unless they bring some new insight into the personality, or tell a really good story, they just plod dutifully through the person's chronology. Zzzz. WALK THE LINE -- great performances, esp. by Reese, fun music, but it was just the standard biopic arc: hard roots - discovery -- meteoric rise -- apex of fame -- substance abuse -- marital problems -- more substance abuse -- rehab or O.D. Zzzzz.

Harris did POLLOCK because his son remarked that he looked just like him. Started reading up on him, put years of effort into getting it written, financed, filmed & produced. But Henry Pollock was boring. His art was shit (and there wasn't even much in the film about his creative process or his influences.) He was an obnoxious person and unpleasant to watch. His story ark was: drinking -- obscurity -- drinking -- slightly less obscurity -- marital troubles -- sudden popularity -- drinking - loss of popularity -- marital problems -- Elyse-level drinking -- car crash. Zzzz.

Trollhunter (2010)
Norweigen flick. Deal with the subtitles. The English dub was workable.
Do you know all of those shitty fairy tail movies re-imagined that totally sucked ass? This movie did it right and won't want you to kill the directors & screen writers.

Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)
The US government creates a super computer to control their nuclear arsenal. What do you expect to happen?
A well made 70's science fiction flick with great cinematography.

That one's pretty damn good. The film combines the plots of the first two books in a trilogy. They are good, too.

Watched MUD the other night. Really fantastic.

Don't know if I'm repeating myself, but THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD is exquisite, perfect.

Movie: Judge Dredd
Why: Superhero action flick. Slight 90's cheese. I didn't think I would like it, but word of mouth pushed me to take a gander. Worth it if you enjoy action/super hero flicks.
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113492/

Movie: Dredd
Why: Also watched it based off of the same whim. Completely different feel. Still an action flick, but a whole lot less future tech than the 1995 version. Also has a very different storyline.

Movie: Drop Dead Gorgeous (2010) (not to be confused with the 1999 version)
Why: Fake documentary on a fashion model. All of the characters & positions they are in are over the top but highly entertaining. Skewers the fashion model industry & documentarians. Morbidly funny across the board.

I really enjoyed the new Dredd. It was beautifully photographed (the slo-mo narcotic sequences were terrific) and of course it has Lena Headey - Holmfirth's finest.

Agreed, wholeheartedly.
Pretty much everything is perfect but what was most striking to me was the opening monologue. This is a spectacular piece of writing in the book but it's slightly trimmed in the film and is (somehow) even better for it.

Well, yes, but when the antagonist is holed up atop a 200 floor Skyscraper the ending has been more than somewhat telegraphed.

Opening narration is a standard ploy when adapting novels, but it's a tricky feat to pull off without coming across as corny. SEABISCUIT succeeded, CIDER HOUSE RULES failed.* For THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES, the opening voiceover (& again when Ford settles in Colorado) serves as the chorus in a Greek Tragedy, giving the sense of a predestined intersection of the fates of protagonist & antagonist about to unfold.

(*But SEABISCUIT succeeded on every level, & CIDER HOUSE RULES failed on every level except Charlize Theron's ass.)

Another good opening narration, and excellent movie too, is Magnolia.

Saw DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES yesterday. Not horrible, but pacing way too slow, plot predictable down to minor details, cardboard characters, & overdone scenes of violence, demolition & mayhem.

Apes apparently can convey a myriad of complex concepts all using the same three sign language signs. Also adopted human monogamy and the social order of THE LION KING.

I just saw it this weekend and was mesmerized. The pace, the music, the creepiness, it was all just beautiful. I had it as a disk from Netflix and am going to watch it again in a few days.

Excellent Clint Mansell score, too.

Frequencies (2013) was enjoyable.

Science Fiction. If you enjoyed the TV show Fringe and like some romance kicked you, I think you will like this. A little bit calmer paced.

Nebraska (2013)
An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1821549/?ref_=nv_sr_1

I removed the trailer, because I think you will enjoy the movie more if you do not see it.

It is slow paced, but well paced. If you enjoy slice of life type movies, you will enjoy this. However, this movie has far more depth than a slice of life movie.
