The Richard Carrier 'university press' (lol) thread.

Brive's email asking for confirmation as regards Carrier's claims to have been published by a university press, plus relevant links:

The predecessor press had been bought up by a conglomerate.

Sorry, Brive -- time to do what Dr. Dick Carrier, PhD can never do: admit you were wrong.
Before I bend over, it's fair to have the Uni itself parse this question.

I have sent the email below to a number of likely information points and await a response. If they are happy with Carriers characterising of the Press then I will indeed do as you say

Re status of Sheffield Phoenix Press.

Dear Sir /Madam

I would appreciate your assistance clearing up the correct status of Sheffield Phoenix Press.

My understanding is that it is an independent publishing house run by academics using University facilities but without the official stamp of the University itself – ie different to say Oxford University Press.

This understanding comes from:

· their website which describes Sheffield Phoenix as “an independent company (not part of a conglomerate)”

· the Wikipedia entry for the now defunct Sheffield Academic Press (“In 2004, the university announced a new independent printing house, Sheffield Phoenix Press”)

· the Wikipedia entry for Sheffield Phoenix Press (“Sheffield Phoenix Press Ltd. (SPP) is an independent academic printing house specializing in biblical studies and religious studies.”)

I was therefore confused to find one particular author referring to his work as being published by “Sheffield-Phoenix, the publishing arm of the University of Sheffield”. This author has repeated this affiliation multiple times in various formats per below.

Could you please clarify whether the usage in bold below is accurate and appropriate? How (if at all) would the University prefer to see their name affiliated with the company? Ie should the company be referred to as an integral part of the University name/brand?

I thank you for your assistance with this enquiry.

Kind regards
xxxxxx

Examples of use:

a major academic press specializing in biblical studies: Sheffield-Phoenix, the publishing house of the University of Sheffield (UK).

........

Ehrman has refused to even address my peer reviewed, Sheffield university press book On the Historicity of Jesus.

.......

given that my Historicity book was published by Sheffield University

.......

will discuss evidence in his book On the Historicity of Jesus (published by Sheffield University)

I have documented it all in my book On the Historicity of Jesus, published by Sheffield-Phoenix, the publishing arm of the University of Sheffield.

You know, I would feel some schadenfreude at this Richard Carrier situation, but I'm pretty certain he is working at Burger King, so I can only feel so much.
