So I found myself linked to Ophelia Benson's blog the other day, and spent an hour or so poking around, because I hadn't visited her site since maybe 2017 or so.

...the woman has lost it. Aside from Trump, literally all she posts about is her completely obsessive anti-trans vendetta. Frankly it's to the point of monomania. I don't even have that strong an opinion about the whole trans debate, but this shit is not normal or healthy. What is it about this subject that causes people to go so totally off the rails?

Yes, they are. Can you blame them? I'm getting a real sense of considerable silent support for Trump -- plus rejection of Harris-Biden on the far Left. How much remains to be seen.

Also, the moves made of late by the Biden campaign indicate to me they are concerned about enthusiasm among their base. Deeper dive polling shows Biden well behind Hillary in core base demographics.

I believe the Dems overplayed their hand with these supreme court seat apoplexy. Threatening to "blow up the system", riot, physically shut down the government, pack the court, add Dem-friendly states in violation of the Constitution, or even urge secession, looks bad.

Sooo...a Canadian tried to assassinate the President of the United States. Isn’t that enough reason to invade?
Since a percentage of our forests are now cinders, we could use the lumber resources.
Also, the Democrats want more states. This would do it.

An armed group of black men who began patrolling Minneapolis during the unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death have been praised by city officials.

The Minnesota Freedom Fighters was formed in late May after the NAACP chapter in the city's north, predominantly black, neighborhood put out a call for residents to help protect small businesses from violence, fires and looting.

A group of about two dozen men gathered and have patrolled the streets since, carrying AR-15s and Glocks and wearing tactical vests and bandannas.

That's a pretty nifty trick for a movement that was in effect a solution looking for a problem. And by the writers own admission stillborn.

Seems to be the narrative provided is at best incomplete. For instance if looking for early canaries - they might like to look into media studies and feminism going back to the 2nd Wave (or the Suffragettes and Seneca Falls set - if you want to include the MRA perspective).

It wasn't just Biden in 1992, Schumer said in 2007 "we should not confirm any Bush nominee to the Supreme Court, except in extraordinary circumstances". It's clear the Democrats were always (or at least since 1992) planning to deny confirmation to a Republican nominee in the last year of a term if they controlled the Senate.

I do think the GOP committed a protocol error by unprecedently not allowing the Garland nomination to proceed and come to a vote and then not confirming the nomination if he was so unacceptable. I think McConnell was worried that moderate Senators from blue states could not be trusted to vote along party lines, and he wanted to spare Senators the embarrassment of having to explain why they voted not to confirm the sort of Democrat nominee that Republicans historically grudgingly accepted. He should have had the courage of his convictions and if there were 3 or 4 Republican Senators who insisted on voting to confirm, that's a good indication the nomination was a fair one.

Instead, while the plan went perfectly for the GOP, it raised the political animosity around Supreme Court nominations that began with Bork and Thomas to a fever pitch, and from here on in, it will be impossible to get a new Supreme Court Judge through if the Presidency and Senate are polarized regardless of what term year the President is in. We may eventually get a crisis where the Court is stuck at 8 members for several years, or the Democrats may go though with their threat of expanding the number of SC judges if they take full control, which would also be a crisis since it would then go tit for tat with every changing of the guard.

Why were the Republicans wrong? You hold the senate and the presidency, you nominate a replacement. You don't like the candidate or think there's going to be an opposition bias in the SC with an incoming opposition to possibly exaggerate bias, you block if you hold the senate. Was always thus. This Biden Rule that lips are flapping about supposedly only applies when the presidency and Senate are at odds. Fact is that SC justices are political appointees. At least it is out in the open. The alternative would seem to be appointments by the judiciary themselves and then you may well end up with a hidden, unaccountable ideological bias given the nature of academia these days.

My two cents says that the US constitution was designed to be the least worst of all possible worlds and the core of it contains safeguards to idiot proof it. The principles behind it apply just as well today as they did then, so the progressive tendency to believe that they know better should be strongly resisted because that comes with a lot of potential for bolloxing everything. Not to say that I am in favour of the right injecting religious morality into it. I think it would be uncontroversial to say that the Rep justices are more prone to sticking with the letter of the constitution while Dem ones are more given to "re-interpreting it because current year", so that may perhaps be why Democrats have been less likely to block appointments in the past, if that is indeed true.
