Perhaps all cops should be issued with Colt 1851 Navy revolvers. Brings variety and entertainment to the concept of speedloading.
In that past such measures have been used to great effect...

It's polarising because it is very inconvenient for a lot of people if true. The two poles are equally idiotic. It's just as illogical to draw conclusions about a scientific issue from the behaviour of degenerate moralising scolds as it is to think that being a moralising scold is constructive. For every woke hysteric I can show you a crank mumbling about Agenda 21, the Jewish conspiracy and climate fraud.

Again, to reiterate, my presumption that police training in the US might be inadequate is perhaps somewhat corroborated by this story (and the bodycam video showing the shooting). That guy never should have passed at the academy.

Lots of communities in the US have really bad cops. I know of one small city in the Detroit area that has a training program for one cop per year. The entire city has about 10 officers. Every year they find some kid and send him to 40 weeks of training. Last year the kid was one of the city councilmen's children. After their brief training (that I understand is super easy to pass) the kid gets a gun and gets to be a cop. The pay is $15 an hour. So, yeah, there are lots of under trained poorly paid cops.

The low pay also means that they may be on the take and setup drug and prostitution protection rackets. Not good.

There is no solution. only mitigation.
Why do you think that "reducing CO2" will slow their economies? Decoupling CO2-e intensity from economic development requires technological advancement. Last time I looked, this was good for an economy, although it can be painful for those tied to the previous technologies (rent seekers etc).

Maintaining the status quo will help GDP growth, what with all of the climate change amplified disasters requiring cleanups and rebuilding. Not so good for societies and local economies though.
1) What the hell.... when did people destroy the meaning of "mitigation". Haha. Flood mitigation used to mean things like dikes, and open marshes, and stuff that would mitigate the effects of flooding. Now, is this called adaptation? If we open up marshes to absorb flood waters are we "adapting"?

2) People and businesses will naturally improve their efficiency... simply as a way to save some money. This happens naturally and the fact is that energy use per capita is down in places like the US. Technology allows us to do things better over time.

3) If we penalize certain countries for using energy (through taxes, cap and trade, regulations) this will drive up the cost of living and the cost of manufacturing/farming.etc. So, if we force modern western countries to all reduce C02 through government intervention we will push more production to countries that have no government regulations and mandates. Thus... manufacturing will move to these unregulated countries. This will create more CO2 in the long run as more and more work go to places like China (who burn coal for almost all their power). Hell.... part of the reason China is pushing toward making electric vehicles is so they can burn their coal for electric power and not have to buy petrol for cars. This shit increases CO2 emissions.... it doesn't reduce them.

4) Treaties like the Paris agreement do not put any restrictions on developing economies. This will simply mean more high energy manufacturing will move to these countries and they will make stuff for the rest of the world using coal fired electric power. and.... no one on the left thinks this is a problem. Somehow, since the west has made tons of pollution in the past, we should punish ourselves and let others pollute freely. Well.... I guess this is fine if we want to appease our guilt and let others take our industry and pollute as much as they want.

so... yeah.... all we have is "adaptation" as a solution (previously known as mitigation).

I understand it as a case of CIA funded agitators (which became ISIS) and the Pentagon funded Kurds fighting each other both done with the purpose of overthrowing Assad back from a time when Clinton thought it would help her chances of getting elected if her strong involvement in pushing to topple odious Middle Eastern leaders was apparent ("We came, we saw, he died"). The Kurds likely supporting the PKK, communist extremists that have been causing trouble in Turkey for years, and have been recognised as terrorists for decades. I'm not sure that the US' continued involvement would make things better, given that their involvement thus far is the reason things are so fucked up. (A strong failure of the Obama administration). That's not to say that it makes sense for Turkey to be in NATO. Or that it makes sense for NATO to exist now that the USSR no longer exists.

Katie Herzog is a writer for The Stranger(Dan Savage's newspaper in Seattle). She's a lesbian, and a feminist, and after the election in 2016 declared that we needed more intersectionality. I face palmed and despaired for the future of liberalism when I heard that, but then something changed(I don't know what)and within a few months she'd made a 180 degree turn around. Now her columns are often if not regularly about the destructive nature of woke culture and identity politics-not just destructive to individuals, but to getting anything actually progressive accomplished-and she gets a lot of shit for it from The Strangers woke pothead readers. Before I despaired but now I have a little hope that these people can leave the cult.

The fury of the Woke's hatred of Tulsi is fascinating. She's actually pretty far left, though largely eschews the SJW positions (e.g., open orders) so dear to the leftist white elite. Plus, after the way Tulsi kneecapped Kamala, they reasonably fear her next target will be their beloved Lizzie.
... her frequent appearances on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show have buoyed her support in right-wing circles.
Well, the leftist MSM has essentially blacklisted her. Which is what they do to inconvenient candidates. After the second debate, when Delaney did such a fine job poking holes in Lizzie's pipe dreams, the only network to interview him was FOX.

I'd feel some sympathy for Silverman if in the past he had consistently treated others the way he wants others to treat him now. He used his interview with Justin to bully and demonize him, and to virtue signal his own alliance with the SJ wing of the atheist movement and help drive Justin out. He showed no charity then, so why expect others to show charity to him now?

I agree that what Silverman is asking for are good. But I see no reason to think Silverman views them as principles that should always govern our discussion/interactions, as opposed to tactics that should only apply when it is to Silverman's benefit.

Fuck him.

Cops where I live are reasonably competent, but I'm still very reluctant to call them. For things like late night noise, suspicious events, no fucking way. Silverman is a knucklehead, trying to re-brand knucklehead as 'firebrand'.

he forgot the word "self-" in that tweet. Reveling in someone's well-earned SELF-destruction is...

..actually quite reasonable
I understand where you are coming from but are we going to be anti-forgiveness? Are people not allowed to be wrong and then realise it? It sounds to me like the very people we have been fighting against the/this whole time.
I've watched Silverman's comeback tour-- the Atheist Republic interview, his hour with Sargon, his two hours with Karen Straughan.
As far as I can tell, Silverman does not yet realise how wrong he is.
If he's confident that he is, in fact, now rightheaded... and I'm wrong... fine... I welcome him planting his freak-flag right were he stands. Die on that hill, or thrive. Start a one-man youtube channel or podcast. Continue with his firebrand website & crowdfunding.

BUT-- I think it's nuts for any organization to hire him, in his current form. IF he really-can still deliver a major donor endowment, then sure fine... hire him to do-so.

But I think he pissed away his former brand-- as the angry but presumably-reasonable guy in a suit-- across the table from a relatively-unreasonable opponent, such as Bill O'Reilly. (Even against Vacula, Justin seemed like the edgelord/MRA/more-marginal guy. Silverman was wrong in that dispute-- but his blindspots seemed very mainstream, normie, an-honest-mistake. No longer!) It's no one's fault but his own-- that he can't simply go-back to being the old David Silverman.

Thanks to TMI... Silverman has lost his presumption of credibility. He exposed himself as a muddle-headed mess. In his recent interviews, he occasionally raises his voice in the same-old self-righteous indignation as his Firebrand Atheism antics... but now, half the time, he's raising his voice in desperation-- to claim he's still a feminist, or we should still 'believe women', or other desperate ploys. His attempted-rant against the Falun Gong was cringey & forced.

Forgiving him before he learns to stop sabotaging himself-- will just result in him disappointing you again.

In the context of climate change politics, 'mitigation' has come to mean something very different than one would expect from its definition. Mitigation refers to actions that address the causes of climate change, whereas adaptation refers to actions that reduce damage due to climate change. So what you're referring to is adaptation, not mitigation, in the current vernacular. https://www.activesustainability.com/cl ... te-change/

Welcome to the Pit, Mr. Silverman.

PZ is having a waking wet dream. I doubt he has ever felt so alive.

The approach of the AGW-religious is all wrong, and the reason for the polarisation. Demanding generalised "action" is never going to get anywhere. The way to approach it is to make specific, concrete proposals that can have a business and environmental case made. Those individual proposals will be easier to get through and harder to argue against (assuming they are actually well thought out and reasoned, and not just virtue signalling, e.g. plastic straw bans). I regret Australia didn't go the nuclear path. Nuclear instead of coal makes so much sense for Australia.
The only response to Climate Change is mitigation. We should do what we can in improve habitats, flood control etc. Why????.... because the Chinese and Indians will NEVER slow their own economies to reduce CO2. If the US, Germany, etc., reduce CO2 through taxes and higher cost energy solutions we will just export industrial production to low cost countries.... countries that make more CO2.

There is no solution. only mitigation.

There is a movement. PZ leads it. It just so happens to be a bowel movement.

I can think of a roundabout way - if Sanders gets the nomination, and picks TG as running mate. He could then pop his clogs, or she could do a Bush 41.

I dated a hairdresser and she'd cut my hair for free. She made me get naked first. I asked her why, and she said to clean off the cut hair easier. I went along with it as it was kinda sexy. She never explained what the ball gag and butt plug were for.
But the hair would stick to her tongue....

I take my Wahl clippers, put the 1/2" attachment on and cut my hair and beard.

Any semblance of a "movement" died when Hitch died, and when chuckleheads like PZ took it over.

I was gonna say. She's marketed herself as 'still just Alexandra from the block' all this time, but you don't get to call yourself 'normal' when you can pay $300 for a sodding haircut. The most expensive salons in the city, excluding any additional procedures, is $45 (give or take). I paid $20 for mine last and that was because I had a full length of hair and I wanted to cut it short. If I'd just come in for a trim it would have been cheaper. If Alexandra's cohorts think that $300 is a 'normal' fee (or not out of the ordinary), then maybe they need to reflect on what 'normal' actually means and whether or not their 'normal' is out of touch with the rest of us plebs.
